Unfortunately, common sense has no place in our legal system. If a map is NOT to be used as a navigational aid then what the heck is it for? here, here geospotter!!! its getting pretty dadgum redicules when someone who buying a map would even think about holding the map maker liable for errors that are part of the process. dont all sorts of things affect topographical/geographical features? im thinking along the lines of weather, natural diasters, construction projects, and natural progression. unfortunately, those of us who know and accept the risk of venturing outdoors understand this but there must be some pretty dumb people running around... 2. there is a limit of how many waypoint can be stored with comments. i believe the number is about 200 and if more of the waypoints have comments then this is the error. 'Get to the point---speak English!!!!'
  3. one thing to keep in mind if doing this is to check the grid system used. alot of survey markers are on the MTM system and no consumer unit that i know of have this as a loaded grid. if this is the case shoot me an email and i can give you the defination to program it as a user grid. 4. the map330, like all 300 series gps, will actually hold 1250 trackpoints. if you convert a track to a route via backtrack, track route you will get a route of at most 30 waypoints. to get the track with several hundred trackpoints you must download the track directly from the gps, not backtrack and then download the routes. if your gps is only 'saving' tracks of at most 30 points, you should check the frequency of recording the trackpoints. to do this from the plot screen <menu>; <track history>; check 0.01 km~30 ft, <enter>, this is assuming you are using metric, otherwis 0.01 mi~520 ft. 'Get to the point---speak English!!!!'
  5. the map330 will save trackpoints every 10 meters. if the trail is only about a mile and at 10 meters that would give you about 160 points which ought be enough. 'Get to the point---speak English!!!!'
  6. my web page shows how to make one and shows pics of my homemade cable. any questions just shoot me an email. 'Get to the point---speak English!!!!'
  7. the upgrade is definately worth the trouble to get a cable. if you dont think that you would use the cable for anything other than an upgrade, make one it is pretty easy. but i think that once you realize how easy the data transfer process is you would get some gis software, record tracklogs etc for fun. 8. looking for information on programming my mag315 with the mtm coordinate system. has anyone done this? also has anyone defined their own datum? 'Get to the point---speak English!!!!'
  9. <menu>; <routes>; <backtrack> is the process for the 300 series. this simply creates a 30 leg route of the track currently in the memory. 'Get to the point---speak English!!!!'
  10. if i were to make a guess they reinstalled the firmware and tested the unit. there is very little adjustment available to be made other than firmware. if your unit had a particularly troublesome firmware version they may have replaced it. 'Get to the point---speak English!!!!'
  11. quote:Originally posted by robertlipe:you do know the case on the 330 is sealed with an ultrasonic weld, right? So you while you can use nutcrackers to get the case open, don't have high hopes for getting the case back together. I'm sure the screwed-together case of the ST and the Meridians is both cheaper to produce and repair (you don't have to destroy the case to open it) but has anyone else noticed the number of "I have water in my unit" posts is WAY lower on the 330 group than on the Meridian or SporTrak groups? im guessing that that is directed at me? actaully the case is not ultra-soncially welded, rather it is a chem weld. but you are right in that a malfunctioning 300 series unit meant a replacement not repair unlit the newer merdians and sportraks. however screwed together cases provided their own problems as in cracks. the sealed case if done properly is much more waterproof and tamper resistant. 12. if you have a dremel tool you could also shave the curve off the back to make it fit properly. also i would be interested in your m330 for an autopsy to see about replacing the internal battery on the 300 series gps if you want to sell it. 'Get to the point---speak English!!!!'
  13. as for magellans intpretation of the ipx standard, i think prime suspect is a little off base. ipx and other standards are not really comparable to real worls tests/exposures. while i would agree that if your unit did as you described, then it was faulty but dropping/sliding and other such motions exert much more pressure than the ipx test standards would subject a test canidate to. if you make a fuss that you need your gps unit i would exppect them to require a credit card to potentially bill you for the gps if you dont return your dead one. as for the warranty, im sure your manual says waterproof, you got it wet and now it doesnt work--make them replace it, period. 14. my recommendation would be to buy a cheap unit and not tamper with you $700+ v. assuming you would harden you unit for off road use, either 'mount' your v on your body or get a basic unit and maps. to me its too much of a risk tampering with the inards of a piece of electronics by uncertified service personal. 15. here in nl, and i suspect most of canada save for quebec, the liability issue depends on whether or not you invite someone onto your property or not, and if not further divided if you provide an attractive nusisance(sp). bottom line is if you invite persons onto your property you are require to take reasonable precautions to protect them, if the individual is an uninivited individual you must advise them of possible dangers such as dogs etc. doing this would absolve you of any civil liability, however in the case of trespassers they are on their own. 16. ok, one question at a time. 1)clear a goto, on my 315 i simply hit <goto> and then <menu>, an option now appears to clear goto. 2)for my 315, to get the names i press <menu> from the plot screen, plot setup, and individually edit the landmarks classes (ie user, cities etc) 3)i dont know if you unit would display 3 digits, but if it would it would be under setup and coordinate formats. if it doesnt you could try to use utm to get a little more precision 'Get to the point---speak English!!!!'

  18. quote:Originally posted by BrianSnat:I think Jeremy and the other BTB have expressed pretty valid reasons for the crackdown on virtuals. There is no ban. There is a tightning of the rules. I think this is a good thing because every flagpole, fence post and roadside marker doesn't have to be a virtual cache. Anybody here can place a virtual. They just have to prove to the admins that there is no way they can place a real cache AND virtual will make other people say "wow", rather than "OK, so what". I think that's a pretty reasonable standard. _"Give a man a fish, he'll eat for a day. Teach a man to fish, he'll sit in a boat and drink beer all day" - Dave Barry_ is it really a tightening of the rules or are the rules now being applied as they are written? 19. quote:Originally posted by Uniacke Raiders:Does anyone know anything about actually repairing a 315. It got wet in the rain & the screen is now buggered up. It's no longer under warranty. Magellan told me to contact Bill's Electronics in Ontario but he says they are not repairable. They'll swap it for a new 315 for $135 + taxes & shipping. I don't think a 315 is worth that much... Anyway, does anyone else have a suggestion ? has anyone actually been able to repair these units ? Of course, in the meantime, I have a shiney new SportTrak Map on order but still miss my usually dependable 315. N 44 54.474 W 63 46.979 problem is getting the case open. magellan, in their wisdom chem-welded the cases and to open them a dremel tools or some careful prying is required. of course the electronics is fixable but getting to it is the problem. ive heard that cutting the case open and then using crazy glue could be feasible, but have never tired it. what ever you do let us know with pictures if possible. 20. quote:Originally posted by Rc Aro Planes:there is only one other way and that is to use a bridge at a paint ball field that I don't think I have the right to use, but that would make it a 8-9 mile hike. The river is dry right now so I am going ahead with it and hopefully some people will make the long trip to grab some goodies! make sure that you check out the access through the paint ball field and if thats a no-no be sure to note it on the cache page. 21. the actual maps that you load into the gps are propritery, therefore you must buy the garmin software for this purpose. however, for 'moving map' use or real time navigation using a laptop there are any number of good gis packages available. check out oziexplorer, fugawi, touratech just to name 3. 'Get to the point---speak English!!!!'
  22. actaully its a lot more common than you might think, we see it quite often. we dont have any poision oak/ivy/sumac here so that cant be the reason. 'Get to the point---speak English!!!!'
  23. quote:Originally posted by G.P.S Trackers(Romeo):Ive used many programs and i find ozi and touratech are the best.Although touratech is expensive you dont have to scan or calibrate maps....u buy them.It also has the capability to use maps from other programs....it can also replay tracks that u made showing speed and distance.as the arrow moves u can adjust the speed......very cool....i got ozi for free through a friend. When i have money im definately buying touratech...less hassle if you are a person limited to play time May the angels fly with us down the beaten path! touratech is expensive? i believe that the cost here is only $179cd, marginally more than ozi, and about the same if one buys the 3d addon. but i agree, ozi and touratech are very good gis packages but tyheir capabilities are beyond what most people need. 'Get to the point---speak English!!!!'
  24. ill admit that i dont use expertgps a whole lot but oziexplorer is one of the most complete gis packages ive used. to my mind it beats out fugawi, gtmpro, turatec? and the only short coming ive noticed is the inability to do layering. any specfic questions, or are you only soliciting opinions?
