  1. point the hour hand towards the sun and halfway between the hour hand and 12 will be south. it helps to lay the watch on a rock or a stump and use a pointer such as a match stick or a twig. you have to consider whether it is am or pm. to understand what is happening lay your watch down near your compass and rotate your watch from 7:00am for sunrise and 7:00 pm for sunset. 2. i would suggest that you read my posting to the cachepolice. me, i am in it for the fun and exercise. personnally i look up caches on a map and then decide if i want to find it, i only want to improve my navagation abilities. i am also not impressed with the number of finds by people. so what, compete with yourself, and not others, simply to improve your abilities

  4. personally i would not hide a cache in a tree if you had to climb the tree. i don't know where you are from but i am from newfoundland and labrador/canada and perhaps our flora and fauna is different from yours. i think clinbing brings in possible nesting interference of birds, possible injury to tree and geocacher, and i don't think that placing the cache in a tree to be climbed realy adds to the hunt. again i must say i am thinking of climbing trees in nl not your area.

  6. how does one actually prepare to search for a cache? i am new to geocaching but not the techniques used. when i am going anywhere by way of gps/map-compass i always scout it out with the use of maps if i am not familar with the area. i have a hunting cabin i haven't visited for two years and when i go in the fall i will review the charts, video footage etc before i leave. if you have the coordinates checking a chart can tell you the terrain and outher valuable datum you may need to consider before you leave. doing the research doesn't make it any easier but it does make it safer in that you have a certain level of preparation.

  8. i have a mag 315 that came with 2.07 3 years ago and yesterday i upgraded the software to 3.15. it took 10 mins and i even downloaded datum to my desktop and uploaded it today dad dropped of his mag 315 with 3.04 software to be upgraded. you can get latest firmware at magellan home page and geocities.com/gormikk/conexione.htm gives a diagram of how to use an old db9 mouse cable as a subsitute for the cable(use vmm and not the colour codings to determine correct wire placement and tape the wires down with electrical tape) and the software to download datum is available at easygps.com. its a very easy process.
  9. got it done. thanks alot. i knew my unit would be wiped clean so i used software from easygps.com to download my datum first. i made my own cable that is better than the one found at web page but why is 3.15 better than 2.07 is it like going from win 3.11 to win xp????
  10. i am about to update the firmaware on my mag 315 from 2.07 to 3.15. advice and guidance is welcome

  12. beening relatively new to this sport (experienced with gps and map/compass but only found 1 cache) i may not know all the 'rules' or principles that we use in these forums and during our hunts. more specifically does anyone monitor and if need be edit/censor comments made to this site or cache contents? are we on the honour system to act responibility?
  13. i know this should be in the other thread but i think it is important enough to stand alone. the one thing most people don't reference taking with them is knowledge and experience. do most people here have a background in survival and/or first-aid? i read in a posting about having to canoe to find a cache, where those gc'ers swimmers and were they experienced boaters? i know this may seem to be getting a little picky but i regularly camp in all four seasons in pretty remote areas in some inhospitiable climates and have experienced many emergencies in the bush that could prove to life threatening if not dealt with properly. a form of communication may well come in handy but here in NL cell phones (sat phones aren't the norm yet)don't work in 50-60% of out wilderness so prearranged meeting/check-in procedures may be necessary. an interesting thought: emergencies are just that, situations you aren't prepared for, so ensure that you have the tools to ad lib.
  14. thanks for all the help in both postings. as to the gps purchase issue, i bought a mag 315 3 or 4 years ago and have used it frequently, if not needed for true navigation then simply taking it with me on routes i know for practice to keep familar with the unit. any suggestions as for other items to carry with you when you are on a hunt? my basic 'survival kit' contains the following items in a waist pouch: gps and reference card, map of area, compass, pencil, protractor, matches, extra batteries, stop watch, band-aids, pocket multi tool, whistle, flagging tape. for more extensive hikes etc. i add a: first aid kit, thermos of water, snacks, rain gear, rope, axe in a back pack.
  15. i guess what i mean by assistance is for the more experienced persons to give me some guidence as to how to start this hobby/sport off on the right foot. me and my wife are both avid outdoorpersons and think the concept is brilliant especially after watching the program on discovery network as to how extreme of a location to eventually place a cache, my cabin is located in central newfoundland in as a remote of an area as there is on the island. is it good manners to place a cache where less than 1000 people visit per year?
  16. looking for mag 315 and accessories. already have one but want accessories and would buy lot if price is right
  17. i am making a request for any assistance that anyone can give me there is a posting in the General forum thanks
  18. i've always found the kodak alks at walmart work very well for the cost (~$10 for 16). from a chemistry standpoint i would suggest that the recharging of nrc alks probably isn't worth the trouble and potential risk of damage due to leaks
  19. Myself and my wife just registered and 'discovered' this sport. Any comments and/or suggestions would be appreciated. I plan to plant a geocache in the vicinity of my cabin. It is located on Granite Lake (Central NL)! This may be a bit extreme, so help from more experienced geocachers would be welcome.
