  1. Friday the 13th has always been my lucky day so I would have placed it for sure!
  2. For a route, maybe Hwy 17 through GA? There are some GREAT caches in Savannah. You could take Hwy 17 north right out of Orlando, through GA and then in SC, where Hwy 17 and I-95 run together, you could take Hwy 321 north through Columbia, SC. In Columbia, catch I-20 east for a few miles and then Hwy 1 through Raleigh, NC. From there, Hwy 1 runs next to I 95 most of the way on up through Richmond, VA and into DC. Not sure about the cache density, but I know there are some good ones on Hwy 17 in GA, esp in Savannah, and there are some caches along Hwy 1 around the Southern Pines, NC area (that's where I am now). If you end up going through Savannah and would like some recommendations, just let me know. From Orlando, Savannah is normally a 4hr trip, but add in Hwy and caching and it could be a great spot to spend the night and dedicate a day of caching
  3. I consider myself very lucky to have started out caching in Savannah, GA. From what I can tell, it is pretty rare in not having much microspew at all. Lots of ammo cans and lots of good, but solvable puzzles - oh and a great caching community to top it all off. I like going to visit places with microspew b/c it's fun to rack up some high numbers of finds in one day - I like it b/c it's NOT the norm for where I usually cache (just recently moved away from Savannah and haven't cached there much yet). If I lived in a place where microspew ruled, I am sure the novelty would wear off quickly I like numbers - but I am a numbers and charts and graphs kinda person. I like my numbers b/c they're mine. I couldn't care less about anyone else's numbers!
  4. I log a DNF after every search attempt. For me, it's like a personal victory when I log a DNF, only to come back again and find it. I love posting that Found It log!
  5. This is great! We just moved to NC, so I'm still getting a feel for the area, but when I go to place a new cache, I'll have to remember this series " We had a TON of really great puzzle/multi caches in Savannah, GA and most of the ones here are traditionals. Might be time to inject a little mystery into the caching scene here
  6. I've got lots of stinky diapers from my toddler. Line up now for your cool cache container!
  7. We just moved to NC so I'm going to need new plates soon - I'd LOVE a GC plate!
  8. When we totaled my Mitsubishi Montero Sport last May, it was getting a measly 16mpg. I knew I wanted something more fuel efficient but the Montero was paid for. When we had the accident I already knew what I wanted. There is only ONE vehicle option that offers 3 rows of seats for under $20K. ONE. For environment conscious families who need a little more cargo or passenger space, there is very little choice. I got my Mazda5 and and love it. The key is to get the auto manufacturing companies to make more fuel efficient vehicles! My caching has definitely taken a hit b/c of the gas prices. Last spring, I was having to fill up that Montero Sport multiple times per week b/c the cache density in Savannah is so low. Now that I've got my Mazda5 and there are some new caches in the area, I need to plan out a smart route to get some of the good ones before we move in March.
  9. They look like that down here in Savannah too. On the road out to Tybee Island, if there's a ship coming up or down the Savannah River, it totally looks fake - like it's just floating right there on the marsh
  10. I am the tech gear person in our house and I have to put in another vote for giving him a "fake" gift and then allowing him to make the purchase decision. Half the fun for me is researching all of the different options
  11. We had one at noon yesterday here in Savannah. It worked out well b/c we had a GGA meeting at 2p. Unfortunately, due to kids' naps, I couldn't make the flash mob event. Looks like it was fun though!
  12. I get a "geocaching.com is performing upgrade" with a pic of Signal. Can't wait to see the new stuff.
  13. I always log my DNFs - for all of the reasons listed above, plus I like the extra little boost it gives when I do get to log the smiley. A little bit of "ha!, finally gotcha!" on my part
  14. I have a Z22 that I got for caching. I was an impatient newbie who really just wanted to get OUT THERE! I bought my Palm at the same time as my GPSr, so paperless caching is all I know. I use GSAK and Cachemate and it works perfectly for me The screen on the Z22 can be hard to read in the sun, but it's not too bad. If it were to die, I'd probably look at a different, cheaper model off ebay with better contrast.
  15. My kids sometimes cache with me, my husband sometimes caches with me. None of them cache without me, so for now, this one account covers just me, yet all of us as well. The kids aren't up for bringing their own swag or anything (2 and 4) so a lot of times we may not trade anything at all. There is no rule, other than the guideline of leaving the cache better than you found it, so just find a system that works for you and go for it
  16. Don't forget the guys who created Veggie Tales. There is an easter egg of them caching on Minnesota Cuke Edit to add their profile link: http://www.geocaching.com/profile/?guid=87...77-40681c44338b Now *that* is cool. I just bought Moe and the Big Exit for the boys today and pre-ordered The Wizard of Ha's for them for Christmas. They are NUTS about Bob and Larry.
  17. You don't even have to use a filter or a special PQ. If, with each PQ, you get all of the caches, not just the last updated ones, it takes exactly one click (and maybe some scrolling) to see if there are any caches that didn't get updated/got archived. If you have the Last GPX column displaying on your GSAK, you can simply click to sort by that column. Scroll down to the bottom and if there are any caches that weren't updated, you can easily check them out to see why not. If anyone has enough tech knowledge to be able to navigate a computer and GSAK enough to get the coords into the GPSr in the first place, I can't imagine not being able to follow this one extra simple step. I understand the other arguments for wanting the archived caches included, but I don't understand this one. It's literally one click (and some scrolling) - no need to set any filters or macros or anything.
  18. That's what I'm going with. When they are old enough to be interested in having their own account. Right now, it doesn't even occur to the 4yo (like the OP I also have a 4yo and a 2yo) to ask for his own acct or to sign the logbook or anything. My ID is kind of a team name for the family b/c I am the most involved (addicted). My husband is unlikely to go out caching by himself, as are my kids. If any of the 3 of them were involved enough to go out on their own, then I'd get them their own ID so their finds don't duplicate mine or reflect caches *I* never found.
  19. I also cache solo the majority of the time...and more often than not, if I have helpers, it's my 2yo and my 4yo. I have a black belt in Tae Kwon Do, but I don't let that lead me to a false sense of security b/c it's been years since I practiced. I carry myself with confidence (and a cellphone) and I am aware of my surroundings. If I am unfamiliar with an area, I'll often circle in my car before finally parking and getting out. I know there is danger out there, but I am not going to wait until I have a big bad male caching buddy to "help" me out (hubby is Army and often not home).
  20. Don't paint the whole state with such a broad brush - you should come check out Savannah. I think we have 2 LPC's in the entire city and surrounding towns.
  21. I lost my eXplorist. It was in the stroller as we were doing a cache that took us on a walking path around a big lake. We stopped to let the kids play at the playground. At some point that night, I realized that the GPSr was gone (that was the last cache we did that day). The next morning, we drove back out there, but there was no sign of it. I think it fell out of the stroller's cupholder as we folded the stroller to go back in the car...... Just last week, I lost a red jeep TB It was with me at one cache and was not with me when I got home. I was having some battery troubles so I think when I was fooling with batteries in and out of my bag, it must have dropped out.....
  22. I started caching last June. My husband is semi-interested in caching, but not real thrilled with the major case of poison ivy he caught, or that swarm of baby ticks he carried out from one cache, or the insane heat and humidity of Savannah summers. It doesn't bother me, and it's a fun way for the kids and me to get out of the house. In spite of all of that, I pretty much stopped caching in February. I didn't really mean to stop caching, but I got a new laptop and just never got around to loading GSAK onto it, or my Palm software. I kept meaning to, I just never did. We don't have a lot of microspew in Savannah, so that definitely wasn't an issue. We have a small informal Yahoo group and when a new leader took over the list, he did a really great job of stoking the fires and stirring up conversation again. Another cacher has set a series of 3-4 CITO events at local boat ramps and another cacher has started having breakfast meetings. Getting that sense of connection back with my local cachers has definitely helped bring back my sense of enthusiasm to caching Savannah is not a very cache dense area, so it is very possible to get pretty much all of the caches and then just kinda sit there....waiting for something to happen....
  23. These are from Cachin' and Crabbin' this past February. My kids really enjoyed this one! A few days later, I went out to Tybee Island to get some pics of the Tybee lighthouse for the GA Geocoin and got some caches while I was out there.
  24. Wow, seeing these pictures really make me wish I had gotten into geocaching back when my husband was stationed at Ft. Lewis, WA! Prime caching areas I try to remember to take pictures, but am pretty bad about remembering to upload the pictures to the computer before I log my finds. Armstrong Trails, Sept '06 (it was SO hot and humid) Bryan-Richmond Hill Trail (the cricket was HUGE)
  25. I've done that twice now. I was so emabarrassed and frustrated (with myself) that I came home and scoured the GSAK help forums to find out how to get rid of the caches that had been archived.
