  1. Hi. Ran into a couple of different coordinate sets on recent caches. One is. N44 -pi 523362 W75 -Pi 778394. The other type is N54 67.746 W113 55.1644 there are others in the group with similar coordinates. These are all in the N44 W75 area. What are these systems and how do I convert these coordinates to something my GPS recognizes? Thanks John
  2. Like it says. Can’t find any buttons on app. Tx
  3. On point #3 of Mineral2's 5/8/17 response to my question at some Garmin update point the filtering criterion of "Awesomeness" appeared in addition to the traditional ones of difficulty and terrain. I assumed perhaps mistakenly that this was a Garmin software change and have not seen awesomeness published on geocaching.com' s cache characteristic lists. I'm confused by some of the responses indicating that you could go to the "found" file( folder?) and delete its contents I can't seem to find this file anywhere in the folders/files either in the Garmin or data microchip. i don't do pocket queries very often just enter the new ones in my area that are of interest. I also have a windshield mounted Montana that I used to use for geocaching (most caches in my area are in the desert or on remote mountaintops only reasonably reachable by high clearance vehicle) but its now so cluttered with cache symbols (most of which I've found and logged on geocaching.com, but they still show as unfound) that I no longer use it for geocaching using the smaller Oregon or an Iphone instead. Is there a way to completely delete all geocaches from the Montana to make it easier to use for off road navigation? Thanks John
  4. hi for some reason in the past my pc treats downloaded geocaching gpx files as adobe so when i copy them into my chip they dont work. tried chaging the software default but i cant find the right one that windows will allow. how do i go about fixing this? thanks john
  5. I don't care if they're deleted or not when I log them as found but when I tap on the treasure chest icon I expect to see only the ones I haven't found. This used to work but I unfiltered the found ones once to relocate a found one but now when I try to refilter out the found ones it doesn't work -all the ones that had not shown when I tap the treasure chest icon. Plus they now have the awesomeness icon which is totally useless to me and some weird graphic labeling system that seemed to appear in the last 1 or 2 Garmin software updates. So now my Oregon 650 which initially came with POS batteries with a charge life that quickly deteriorated to under 2 hours, POS accuracy with constantly moving directions to GZ (including 180 degree flips), and now POS geocaching software that forces you to run constant PQ updates. Whenever I Get a notice of a new geocache I put it in the GPS so now I have over 100 entries to delete shown by GC number which I have no idea if I have found it or not. Can anyone recommend a better GPS for Geocaching i.e. is Delorme any better or Smartphone? I would love to take this unit to a skeet range and let the shooters have at it but it would depend I'd there's something better out there. Any advice?
  6. Thanks for the help - . Unfortunately it means I have to go and solve another of these almost impossible puzzle caches. Maybe by 2018.
  7. Just found a mystery cache that's been eluding me for years. Logged the find and it's OK in the cahce section but on the map it's still a question mark. ???
  8. I have a different problem. I got an email saying my pocket query was available .If I click on download now nothing happens. If I click on view results it opens up a list of 50 pages x 20 caches. I don't want to download 1000 files . Last time i just put in the unzipped PQ file but there doesn't seem to be any attached to the email. Help!
  9. Thanks. What are field notes files?
  10. Hi All My Oregon 650 all of a sudden shows all geocaches in the area as unfound even if they were previously shown as found. The majority of caches were entered as pocket queries some time ago and put on a separate data chip (Backwoods Mapbook Ontario) - others were copied over individually as GPX files after downloading. I looked at the GPX file properties and they show as "open with VLC Media player". Running Windows 10. Is there a way to put the found ones back? Thanks

  12. Just a hunch... but have you loaded a routable map to use while driving? If so, you probably also have it set to lock on road, and even if you don't, the arrow will point to the spot on the road where you are to "turn off" to the cache. . map. I do this by setting up two geocaching profiles - one for driving and one for when I'm on foot. I've set up a shortcut button on the driving profile to switch to the non-driving profile so I can easily accomplish this when I park the car. Thanks! that's exactly what was happening. I had no idea that the arrow would point to the road turnoff. Your shortcut idea sounds great. I'll have to see how to do it.

If so, you probably also have it set to lock on road, and even if you don't, the arrow will point to the spot on the road where you are to "turn off" to the cache. It's a good idea when you get out of the car to switch your routing to "direct," and better yet, switch over to a non-routable map. 14. I have a slightly different issue with my Oregon 650. When I'm driving the arrow generally points towards the Geocache GZ. But when I approach the cache the arrow does not point at the cache but usually away - I have to try various directions until I find a direction where the distance to GZ decreases. The compass profile is set to Geocache. What am I doing wrong?
  15. Downloaded PQ and unzipped files. Tried copying both GPX files to Garmin 650 storage chip GPX folder . Files are in GPX subfolder but when i try to do a "Go to Geocache all I get is "No results found try adjusting search parameters". This happens also if I select geocaching icon on GPS. This is on my storage Chip which has not yet had any geocachibng data on it - just a topo map Help!
  16. Just ran into a situation where after 1 full day the THREE cachers who had the first signature on the log still had not bothered to log in. So on seeing this i made a special 15 mile run to try to get the FTF only to be disappointed. Had I known I would have waited until I was in the area on other business before going for the cache. To me not registering a(n?) FTF ASAP after the find falls on a scale somewhere between ignorant and discourteous. I can see one person temporarily not having access to a computer/smartphone, but three? Yes Geocaching disappointments are part of the game (DNFs, mugglings, sleeping in and missing FTF opportunities, etc), but for some strange reason a lack of common courtesy on the part of fellow cachers was not what I expected. Maybe its a local thing.
  17. many thanks to B & R and G-G for your advice. It finally turned out I had to uninstall Winzip as it kept "jumping on" the file as soon as it downloaded and telling me i had to pay etc. I then installed 7-zip and it worked fine the 500 downloaded GPX files are now safely ensconced in GPS memory.
  18. Hi. Just received a pocket query that i want to transfer to my Oregon 650 GPS. If I "download" it comes up with a Zip file that I can't open without paying WinZip $30. If I "view results" and try select all i get a file type ( .loc) that windows won't recognize so I have to look at a bunch of possible options which try to sell me a bunch of software. How can i transfer the data without having to pay or ckuttering up w my PC with a bunch of diagnostic stuff I don't want? Many thanks
  19. I have a different font question. When I entered a www.geocaching.com log on a find today, all of a sudden the fonts came out so tiny as to be almost illegible. the only thing that happened was that an idiot child was Googling stuff this afternoon and it swears it "didn't do anything" LOL. how do you set the default fonts so they are legible as you type them ( for instance ,as I type this, the font size is # 1)
  20. Thanks - that gets rid of my concern on losing the corrected data. I wasn't aware you could load GPX files of multiple points in Google Earth - all I've ever done was type in single point coordinates. Your solution sounds like it could work for me. Now: How do you store files to a bookmark? and how do you upload to Google earth?. I'm a newby at this unfortunately. Thanks agin AZ john
  21. I've been slowly getting into unknown caches, solving puzzles and entering the corrected coordinates on the cache description sheet in Geocaching.com. When I send these to my GPS they show up OK in the corrected location as little question marks rather than green boxes which is cool. But when I look at the geocache map in Geocaching.com the unknown caches are still in the old uncorrected location. This makes it difficult for me to plan my geocaching circuits using the Geocaching.com map as often the corrected locations are quite different and far from the uncorrected ones. Is there a way I can get the Geocaching.com map to put the solved ( corrected) caches in the correct locations? A related question is with pocket queries. If I get a new one for my area and send it to my GPS will this overwrite the unknown caches that I spent time getting corrected coordinates for? We've had around 100 new caches published in my area in the last few weeks and I'd like to get a pocket query and update my GPS but am concerned about losing my corrections. Any advice/knowledge? thanks for any help anyone can offer. AZJohn
  22. Many thanks guys []. Tons of good stuff here. I've already used it to solve three of the stumpers I had on my list. John
  23. Just started caching a month ago and have found all the regular caches within a walking (5 mile) radius from my house. Now working on puzzle caches. While i resolved the digital root caches most of them seem to use alphabet scrambles ( Eq all 26 letters letters reordered) or alphanumeric conversions( eg "b9", "C7", "cd4" etc) of some type which I'm having difficulty with. Are there any good online references for solving these? Thanks in advance for any help.
  24. Thanks again guys. As advised I deleted all the previous geocaching entries in my GPX files then redid the drag and drop method. For some reason it didn't take when i dropped the files on the removable chip's GPX folder but worked after i dragged and dropped to the main GPS;s GPX file folder. I noticed it now longer shows the "multicache" caches that I had before when I was just downloading the basic info. Would this be related to how I specified the initial pocket query? sorry for all the questions i'm a newbie to all this.
