  1. All the geocaching groups in South Carolina are hosting a large scale event on the weekend of October 12-14, 2007. Hopefully, this event will grow into MEGA status, but only with the rest of the country's assistance. We've got plenty of events scheduled for that weekend, including a Meet & Greet/Night Caching 101 session on Friday night with the main events on Saturday starting with a CITO at 7:00 am and ending with a Geocoin Texas Hold'em Poker Tournament. CacheToberFest t-shirts will be for sale and a coin is in the works. Make plans to attend this awesome event. CacheToberFest
  2. We are in the process of trying to come up with a design for CacheToberFest - a large event in S. Carolina that hopefully will get larger every year. We only have a few entries from our people as some think they are not talented enough to submit a design. I'd like to see what the rest of the country can come up with. We will use this design for the CacheToberFest t-shirts as well as the coin (if we have enough time to get it minted). You will find some ideas on this thread at the SCGA website. Let's see what great designs you guys can come up with. CacheToberFest
  3. CITO Sweep Along the Riverbanks Make that 14 for S. Carolina!
  4. With the addition of USCGA - Kemet Park Clean Up S. Carolina is now up to 13 CITOs for 2007.
  5. Are the graphs ever going to be updated again or has this "contest" just died? This was a great way to see what everyone else is doing and to really spark an interest in holding CITO events. The environment ultimately is the victor. Plus, we always score good PR points with the park managers, media, etc.
  6. The South Carolina Geocachers Association sponsored 7 CITOs in our state for National CITO day. Here are some pics from the different regions. SCGA Aiken Regional CITO SCGA Lowcountry Regional CITO SCGA Midlands Regional CITO Pee Dee Cacher's CITO @ the Boat Landing A Walk in the Park: USCGA's CITO in Honea Path
  7. S. Carolina is now tied with Florida with 12 CITOs!
  8. Are the tallies for National CITO Day only or for all CITOs held/scheduled? If it is for all held/scheduled, S. Carolina has already held 2 so far with another 8 scheduled for April 14th. CITO with FRED IV GC11Y5J is scheduled to be held May 12. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...52-0f79996c3f85 That brings S. Carolina's total CITOs held/scheduled up to 11.
  9. For those who have not heard, Jon Barry of Jon&Miki (aka ikim&noj) passed away March 2, 2007, from complications from a massive stroke. For those who remember, Jon&Miki spearheaded the opposition against the legislation bill H3777 that was presented to "ban" geocaching in certain places in South Carolina. Through their efforts and many others in the state, the bill was put on hold and later "died." Without their tireless persistence, who know what may have become of geocaching in SC. Jon was a great man and I doubt there is a cacher in SC that hasn't heard of him. He was instrumental in bringing many to geocaching and helping many others who were just getting started. He also help arranged for cachers to come in and set up caches and assist kids at camps for children with cancer or who have lost a sibling to cancer. Jon and Miki's efforts to push the positive aspects of geocaching forward in SC have helped everyone in some way, shape, or form. He will be sadly missed by many in and out of South Carolina.
  10. Personally, if you want to go that route, I would suggest no physical caches in cemeteries to avoid any potential problems in the future.
  11. Those coordinates pass through the lower part of my county. There isn't much interesting along those lines, but I may be able to get one where the I-95 or US 21 cross over a railroad track alongside my deputy sheriff car, or get one beside the Edisto River somewhere. I'll see what I can find on my next patrol.
  12. Why not just use an ammo box. The path to insanity is seldom a solitary journey.
  13. I personally have a TB Hotel with a take 1 leave 1 policy. I implemented it for this reason: If you have one in your possession and exchange it for another one, chances are you know how to log a TB. We have has so many TBs disappear due to ignorance of the logging procedures. However, I do not have a problem with cachers emailing me and asking if they could take one to help on its way without leaving one. I even get IOU's from local cachers who grab one and deposit another a few days/weeks later. Again, I only made this policy to try and keep TBs from going MIA. The path to insanity is seldom a solitary journey.
  14. PiGMaN took a TB that I placed in the Travel Bug Depot in Greenville, SC. While it was not my bug, I am a little ticked. I'm heading up @ Blowing Rock, NC, to do some hiking and caching @ Memorial Day. Maybe I can find some time to do some PiG hunting as well. The path to insanity is seldom a solitary journey.
  15. I say go for it. A few friends and I are going hiking in the Pisgah National Forest in N.C. @ Memorial Day and plan to place a cache either atop, at the bottom, or somewhere inbetween by a little known waterfall about 6 miles back in the forest along a seldom traveled trail. I'm carrying my climbing gear to climb and rappelling the waterfall, so I see no problem doing it. As long as I can get an ammo box from Sissy-n-CR first. The path to insanity is seldom a solitary journey.
  16. Well, I was hoping to see what Wolf & Mist had come up with so far. Looks like they're getting some run around. Hope something works out soon. I'll probably attend whichever event that is closer that day. Going to wait a while to see what happens before posting a note somewhere. The path to insanity is seldom a solitary journey.
  17. It looks like the consensus for the meeting I am planning puts it for March 22. Might I suggest that we discuss the Earth Day thing to be April's meeting, and continue having a meeting each month there after? Perhaps another geocacher could volunteer to be the next month's meeting organizer. Of course we could all discuss this at the meeting in Walterboro. The path to insanity is seldom a solitary journey.
  18. Just wondering what would suit everyone better, to have the meeting during the week at night or on the weekend (Friday or Saturday) night? The path to insanity is seldom a solitary journey.
  19. It appears that the geocacher was imitating something "Bender" on Fox TV's Futurama might say. Anyway, as distasteful as it might be, a joke is all I think it was intended to be. As the others have already mentioned, "Get Over It!"
  20. Well, I recently (Jan 1st) set up my own TB Hotel on I-95 in Walterboro. There were a few reasons why I set it up the way I did. First, it is right behind a restaurant that I do some work for about once a week, so I drop by to maintain it at least once a week. I modeled it after the Travel Bug Depot in Greenville with the same rules. We require if you take a TB to leave one also. Here is my reasoning on this: It is more likely that TBs coming and going from my hotel will be logged correctly since the cacher already has one in his possession. This keeps newbs from grabbing one and never logging it and the TB turning up MIA. I do agree this isn't the greatest rule since some cachers may be able to help a bug on its way but can't since they don't have one to trade out. A minor flaw IMHO for trying to keep TBs from vanishing w/o a trace. As for cache size, mine are a little bit bigger than a shoebox. I divide the container into 2 sections. The smaller, about a third of the cache, is for smaller trade items for cachers w/o bugs and the larger for the TB's. [This message was edited by Hologram21 on February 06, 2003 at 07:17 PM.]
  21. To all the Geocachers in the lower part of South Carolina: I think it is about time to get together for a meeting! Since Walterboro is sort of the center for the lowcountry, my suggestion is to have it here. Plus, I'm friends with the owners of a seafood restaurant who would let us use their establishment. There is a room that could be reserved or if we have some smokers, the bar area has a good bit of room. Let me know what you guys think. Perhaps we could make this a monthly thing
  22. Hey Penny! Just wanted to tell you that you beat me to the Travel Bug Hotel cache by a week or so. I had to wait til a friend got back to Walterboro for Christmas so that I could use his GPS to get the coordinates for my cache, since I Geocache without one. I got the email stating your new ones and was a little disappointed to see that you put a hotel up before I did. Oh well, I put mine up anyway on New Year's. It about 60 miles up I-95 from your's. I also sent an email to MrPlug about putting your hotel and mine up on his Atlanta Bug Exchange cache page that lists some hotels all over the world. Hope you don't mind. And by the way, I'm not hoarding Charity. She's riding around in my truck waiting for me to head back to Columbia. I should be returning up there soon for a couple of months if I get the deputy sheriff position here. Netwatcher and I have done half of Goldilocks and the Three Bears in Harbison State Forest and I had inteded to put her in that one when we started it. In any case, she'll be out of my hands no later than the end of January.
  23. I Geocache without a GPS. I try to stay away from multis, but oddly enough, my first travel Bug find was in a multi; however, I only found the last leg of it. I do go with my friend who doesn't own one and he helps too. I also sometime go with another friend who does own a GPS and the only thing i would say is that they do make it easier to get you in the gerneral vicinity. While he is wandering one way following the GPS, I go another and 9 times out of 10 I find it first. He can't understand how I do it. I have more finds now than he does. I just try to find a good place that I would hide it. I recently had to use his GPS to get coordinates so I could hide some caches. If all else fails, ot I'm going someplace that is too big to search the entire area, I'll plug the coordinates into http://www.Lostoutdoors.com to help me out.
