  1. I've upgraded from the Explorist 200 to the 210, & now the 500. I've been reading through the detail manual, but can't seem to find answers. Thanks for any help you can give. 1. The manual says that when the explorist is first turned on, the backlight is always set to low. When I turn mine on, it is always turned to high. Then I have to manually set it to low each time. I tried to set the Light Timer to 30 seconds so it would automatically turn off. But when I do that, then every time I zoom in or out, the backlight comes on in high for 30 seconds. Is there a setting some where, other than the Light Timer, that controls this? 2. I tried a "Goto" to "Work" this morning. I got the normal dotted line from my current position arrow to the "Goto". But I also got a double orange line from where I engaged the Goto to the "Goto location". I've never seen this before. What is this & is there an option to turn off. 3. When I was playing with the unit last night, I found a screen where you checked all these items that you want to show on the screen. I can't find this screen again. ??? Thanks again for the help.
  2. Could someone tell me the maximum size of a map region that can be downloaded to the 500? I found the 500 manual on the Magellan web site. The firmware upgrade has a few new features. Is there an updated manual? Thanks for the help.
  3. I'm working on a puzzle cache & it's driving me crazy. It's a keyword number cipher. I know the keyword. I'm trying to determine the coordinates. Letters are substituted for most of the numbers in the coordinates. Does anyone have any resources or hints that would help in solving this puzzle?
  4. I use MapSend all the time & I have a "3D" button on the tool bar at the top of the screen. Make sure, under "View", that "Toolbar" is checked. You can only download the "flat" maps to the GPSr. The 3D function only works on the computer.
  5. I have an Explorist 210 with the USA Topo map software. I use GSAK to create the file I download to the GPS. I create a PQ from the geocaching web site, like caches 20 miles from my house. I open the PQ file in GSAK. Then I create the Explorist file Local20.gs. Then I just use Windows Explorer & drag it to the Geocache folder on the Explorist. The nice thing about GSAK is that you can print the Cache Pages out to take along with you. I have a notebook in my truck with the cache pages. When I get back from finding a cache, I write "Found" & the date on the cache page & remove from the notebook. When I get a chance I log the finds & go to GSAK & delete the found ones. Then create a new Local20.gs file & move that to the Explorist. You can't delete the found ones in the Explorist. I also create the Mapsend file Local20.wpt. Then I can run the Mapsend program & open the Local20.wpt file & see the caches on the map. I usually print some maps before I head out. This sounds complicated, but it's really pretty simple after you try it a few times. GSAK takes a little time to learn, but it's worth the effort. Have fun, you'll really enjoy the Explorist 210.
  6. I set my 210 up similar to zeke. On the map page I show distance to end (the cache) & speed. I like to watch the speed when driving in the truck. On the compass page I show distance to end & accuracy. It's nice to know how accurate the distance reading is, as you approach the cache. Normally I use the map page when approaching the cache. I keep zooming in until I get to the 100 ft scale. Then when too close for the map screen, I switch to the compass screen for the final approach. I found the approaching cache alarm gets in the way when you get close. By watching the distance I know I'm approaching the cache. I like to set the poor GPS signal alarm. In heavy cover it warns me that the GPS is not updating. You can set these alarms on & off on one of the preference screens.
  7. I have a 210 & mine acts the same way. I don't see it as a problem. When on the compass screen the arrow points to the cache. If it did display the bullseye (like Points Of Interest), the bullseye would always be at the end of the arrow. So what's the point of the bullseye?
  8. I started out with the Explorist 200 (Father's Day Gift). It worked really well for finding the caches. But I soon learned that not being able to download from the computer was going to be a problem. So I got me an Explorist 210. With the 210 I can use GSAK to manage my caches & download & print out the caches. Great advantage. So, I'd recommend spending $50 more & getting a 210. I don't know much about the Garmin. When I first start looking for the cache I use the map screen. I can see visually where it is located from where I'm at. As I get closer, I keep zooming in until I get to the 100 FT scale. Then I switch to the compass screen for the final approach. On the compass screen the distance to cache & the accuracy are displayed. It's helpful to know the accuracy once you get to ground zero. If you're walking towards the cache & the distance is not changing, you probably don't have a good signal. The 210 has an alarm that flashes "Poor GPS Signal". That helps me to know what's happening. Also, if you are 250 FT away & walking at a tangent to the cache (think 250 FT radius circle), the display will stay on 250 FT for sometime, before it will start to increase. I'm no expert here, but I hope this helps a little.
  9. I don't think it timed out. It went thru & I even edited it some. It was listed on "My Account" page as "waiting for review". Where do you look to see the review que? Thanks for the help.
  10. I hide my first cache. Then I filled out the form & submitted it. When I went to "My Account" it was listed as "waiting for review". This morning it's gone from "My Account". So I thought it would show up on the website. It's not there. Is everything okay? I thought it would be either waiting for review or on the website. Thanks for the help.
  11. I've been reading all the information on hiding a cache & I'm ready to place one near my home. I've looked at the form you fill out & I understand what's needed. My question is about the description of the cache. It looks like you can enter text or HTML code. I have a couple of pictures to go with the description & also want to format the layout. Using text, I'm not sure what I'll get. I'm familiar with HTML, a little. I use Front Page for my web site. Can I create a page in Front Page & paste that into the description box? The FP HTML seems to have a lot of extra "junk" with it. Is there a simpler way, without writing HTML code? Also, is there a way to preview the page before it's places on the web site? Thanks for the help.
  12. Hey thanks for the help. I resized the map & everything is fine. Thanks again.
  13. Thanks for taking a look. The problem only shows up on my laptop, which is 1024 X 768. The profile page is to wide to display in 1024 pixels. The think that puzzles me is that every one elses profile page fits & I have the same size picture as they do.
  14. Okay, I'm no expert here, but I have been using the 210 for a couple of months. I've been doing what you're trying to do many times. So I know it's possible. I don't use the Magellan software. I've learned to use GSAK & it's worth learning. The way I understand the 210 is that you can download POIs as POIs or Geocaches. When downloading using GSAK, they go to the Geocaching folder. When I view the cache, I get extra information that came from the GC web site (using Pocket Queries). When you push "mark" you are creating a regular POI. This seems to work for you on the compass screen. So I think your problem is with the Geocache point that you downloaded. If I pick a Geocache point, the icon appears on the compass screen, just fine. So I know it works. What folder are your cache points going to on the 210? I'd go to Preferences, Active Setup & make sure that folder is picked as the active Geocache folder or POI folder. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. I think if you check where your points are stored on the 210 (folder) & then look at the Active Setup, you'll figure it out.
  15. I uploaded a picture for my profile page. When I bring up my profile page, my picture is cut off on the right hand side & I have to scroll horizontally to see the whole picture. I've looked at many other member's profile pages & everything fits the page horizontally. How can I fix this? Thanks for the help.
  16. 1. How do you delete a Bookmark List that you no longer need? 2. Sometimes when creating & populating a Bookmark List, I get the message "You can not bookmark an unapproved listing". All the caches in the list seem to be active ones. ??? 3. How do you delete a Pocket Query from the list after it is run & you no longer need it? Thanks for the help.
  17. How do you delete "Loactions" in GSAK? I can delete waypoints, but not locations.
  18. This is what I do: 1. Bookmark the caches I'm interested in doing. 2. Create a .LOC file & download using Magellan Geocache Manager to the Explorist 210. 3. Create a Pocket Query from the bookmark List. 4. Load the Pocket Query into GSAK. 5. Using GSAK I print out all of the cache pages to take with me. Question: Is there a way I can download these waypoints into Mapsend so I can print some maps to take with me. Mapsend seems to be wanting an .XLS or .WPT file, which I don't have. Also, If someone has a better workflow, I be interested in hearing about it. I'm still climbing the learning tree.
  19. Thanks embra for the quick reply. I tried moving the region file using Windows Explorer & it seems to work fine. Thanks again for the help.
  20. I've just installed the MapSend software & tried to download a map region from my PC to the 210. Can't communicate. MapSend seems to be looking for a Com Port. The 210 is connected USB. Help?
  21. I bookmark 27 caches. I try to create an .LOC file. When I try it says "Can not create a bookmark for unapproved cache". all my caches show active. What can I do?
  22. I've been using an Explorist 200 for geocaching, but upgraded to the 210 so I could download waypoints instead of entering by hand. Is there a way to download multiple waypoints, without using pocket queries? I'm using the Magellian Geocache Manager. I also tried GSAK, but the learning curve seems higher. Here's what I do: 1. Find a cache I like. 2. Print it with 10 logs. 3. Bring up a map & print it. 4. Save a GPX file. In Magellian Geocache Manager I can load these files one at a time. Is there a way to combine these caches into one file or load multiple files into Magellian Geocache Manager? Thanks for the help.
  23. I'm just starting out geocaching, with 13 finds under my belt. The family & I are having a great time. I got an Explorist 200 for Father's Day. It works great. But I miss the ability to download from a PC. I'm thinking of getting the 210. I can get the 210 plus the MapSend 3D Topo for $180. Question: will the 22 MB of internal storage be enough to download a reasonable area of Topo maps? I don't have a good feel for storage space vs. map area. I've also looked at the 400 with the SD card. It's more money, but I don't want to be upgrading the 210 to the 400 in a few months. Also, the 210 comes with a 12V adapter. Is there a plug on the 210 for this? The 200 doesn't have this plug. Thanks for all your help.
  24. Is there somewhere on the site that explains what the icons are that are displayed on the pages that list the caches? I've looked everywhere. Thanks.
