  1. I use GSAK to create a GPX file, then download it to the GPS. Can't see the hints.

As a work around, I put %Hint in the "Extra information to show as first log" & the hints show in the first log on the GPS.

I'd like to not see the hint until I'm ready to give up the search.

    Any idea?

  2. I installed the Beta 3.71 Firmware & everything seems fine. I like the new filtering that was added. You can filter the cache list by type, cache size, difficulty, terrain, & status. My question is about the map screen. It looks like there is no filtering on the map. All caches are show. I have two GPX files loaded, caches to find & my found caches. All of those show up on the map all the time. I'd like to turn off the found caches on the map. Can't find a way to do that. If the filtering worked on the map, that would work to. Anybody found a way to hide caches on the map screen?

  3. When I get close to a cache, an alarm goes off telling me I'm there. The problem is it goes off hundreds of feet to soon. I can't find where to set this distance in the 450. Is it part of the GPX file? I use GSAK to create the GPX file. I can't find a way to set that in GSAK either. Thanks for any help given.

  4. One thing about found caches. It doesn't read the found status in any GPX files that you bring into the GPSr. So, if you have a Pocket Query of say 800 caches you've found & you send that to the GPSr, they won't show up as found. The only way the GPSr shows a cache as found, is if the cache is marked found in the GPSr. Hope this makes sense.

I like to keep my found caches in the GPSr so if I'm caching with friends, I can still play along, even if I've found the cache. But normally I don't want the found caches in my list. So, the above causes me some problems.

I have a workaround if anybody is interested.

  5. I had the same problem. I'd download 500 caches as a GPX Export created in GSAK. Only 17 would display in the GPSr. I never could get it to work.

If you download the lastest Build of GSAK (it's in the forum, not the web site), there's a choice to download to Explorist GC. Plug in your GPS & download directly to the GPSr. Works great.

I have a file of my found caches to use when out caching with friends. When I put that file in with the "unfound caches" they all show up together in one list. So, I thought I could filter out the finds. Doesn't work. The Explorist GC doesn't recognize the found status in the GPX file. If you mark the cache as found in the GPSr it will be recognized.

  6. Does anyone know of any software that can manage the Favorites List in the Nuvi 350? I have favorites from all over the country. You can only see the closest 50 on the unit. I think you can do a nearest to another city instead of your current location. But that really doesn't help. With custom POIs I can manage those in GSAK & download to the Nuvi using the POI Loader. Just wondering if there is a way to do a similar thing with favorites.

  7. I'm a little confused about upgrading the maps for my Nuvi 350. I was thinking that you got a free upgrade for a year. I bought the 350 in February 2008. I went to the Garmin web site, registered, upgraded the operating system. Then it said something about unlock code & date unlocked today. What is this about? It looks like they want me to buy the 2009 maps. This is what I got:

Available map updates for this device:

City Navigator® North America NT 2009 Map Update Buy Disk Buy Download

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Maps installed on this device:

City Navigator North America NT 2008 Deluxe Unlock

Region: City Navigator North America NT 2008, Deluxe All Regions, Apr 07

    Code: 78...

    Unlock Code: 4PK7GQ...

    Date Unlocked: Jun 21, 2008

  8. The downloadable map is just one region, for about $50. I downloaded the Ontario region. When you download you have to put in your serial number. Well, it was the old thing of is it the serial number in the software about box or is it the serial number in the battery compartment. I put in the wrong number. The map wouldn't work. I made five calls to tech support. They said they would supply me a link to download a working map. They never did, but charged my Visa. I contacted the bank & disputed the charge. After several weeks I got a credit back on my Visa. I would never ever download maps from the Maagellan site. I'd go for the CDs. I've been looking at them on ebay. The CD is the best deal.

  9. I just got my nuvi 350 two days ago, so I'm still in the learning mode. I use GSAK with my Explorist 500 for finding my way to the cache. So I used the same database in GSAK & exported to a GPX file. Then I used the Garmin POI Loader & upload the file to the SD card. All my Custom POI files I keep on the SD card. I don't load them to the 350. My Favorites are on the 350 & my Custom POIs are on the card. Makes sense to me. You can export different GPX files, say one for a Sunday trip or a weekend trip or just a list of "ones to do". They will show up as different catagories in the 350. If you set up GSAK right, you see the "smart name" listed on the 350, not the GC number. The 350 also shows cache name, by who, D/T.

My routing method - I'm planing a cache day tomorrow. So I go to GSAK database pick the caches I want to do, filter them out. Then I look at a map & see the order I want to do them in. Then in front of the smart name I put Z1, Z2, Z3......which is the order I want to do them in. Tomorrow morning I go to Custom POIs Saturday trip catagory, pick Z1....& off I go. When I find the cache, pick Z2... & so on. The Z2 will be easy to find in the list, because the list is by closest distance. The reason for the Z is so if it's too far down the list I can spell it Z... very quickly. Also, I don't have to wite down the names of the cache & the order. Sometimes jumping to the next closest works, but not always. So I like to plan the route.

I'd be interested in how others use the 350 & Custom POIs.

  10. I'll be working outside of Toronto for several months & would like to do some geocaching. I have no Canada maps for my Explorist 500. I downloaded Topo Canada (Ontario) map from the Magellan web site for $50. There was some issue with the serial number & my map won't work in my Explorist. I've been working with customer support for two weeks & still no working map.

I saw on ebay the Mapsend Topo Canada CD, Part No. 980611-10, $65. Does anyone know if this will work with the Explorist 500? It seems that Magellan no longer sells this CD. I'm a little confused. Will the Mapsend Topo Canada CD work like the Mapsend Topo 3D CD USA?

    Thanks for helping.

  12. I had this long write-up about my problem & got an error when I tried to post & lost it all.

Short version: I have an Explorist 500. I bought Topo Canada - Ontario from the Magellan web site. I put in my serial number & downloaded. Now I get some kind of security error every time I try to load the map.

I put the serial number that's under the "About" menu on the GPS. Seems that they wanted the serial number that's on the sticker inside the battery compartment. Who would have thought. I use the serial number that's under the "About" menu on the GPS when I use Topo USA 3D.

Thanks for any help you may give.

  13. Under "File To Create", just pick a folder on your hard drive. Then use Windows Explorer & drag the file to either the SD Card or Internal Memory. I keep all the geocaches & POI files in Internal Memory. I keep all my detail maps on the SD Card. Under Geocache ID put %con1-%smart. This will put a letter in front of the smart name showing the container size (S=Small, M=Micro, R=Regular). Under Geocache Name put %Name. Required Format is Explorist Geocaches. I've alway found it easier to create my files on the hard drive & just drag them over to the Explorist. The Explorist looks like just another hard drive. This goes for geocaches & detail maps. Let me know if I can help further.

  14. I have a macro that will automatically split the geocaches into multiple files, based on distance from GSAK center point, which in my case is my home coordinates. It names the files 2-23-Local, 23-45-Local, 45-67-Local, etc. The "Local is just my designation for my local area caches (GSAK database name). The numbers are the distance. Sometimes it's a pain to have to switch files as I move away from my home coordinates, but it's the best workaround I've found. It will take thousands of geocaches & split them into 200 cache files in a couple of seconds. I didn't write the macro, but found it on the GSAK form, I think. I did modify the macro to change the destination folder. Let me know if you need the macro or need further help.

  15. Go to "GPS / Export To Magellan Explorist" at the top of the screen. This will create a .gs file. Then connect the GPSr to the computer. It will look like a Removable Hard Drive. Using Windows Explorer, drag this file to the Geocaching Folder. If you need more help, let me know.

  16. I've asked this question several times here, Googled it big time, asked all my friends, & checked all the Yahoo Groups, but still no answer.

I use Mapsend to create a route from A to B. It has to be saved as a .WPT file. I would like to upload this information to geocaching.com & create a "Caches Along A Route" Pocket Query. I think it needs to be a GPX file type.

I've used GPSBabel with all kinds of different conversion settings, but nothing seems to work.

I can't believe I'm the first one to do this.

    Can someone help?

  17. I'm not sure if I can help, but here goes:

I use Mapsend Topo 3D USA v. 1.00. I go into Mapsend & create my region, then save to my hard drive. Then I connect the Explorist to the computer & use Windows Explorer to drag the file to Explorist SD card. Mapsend will create the .imi file automatically. This file is "branded" with the serial number that you put in when you save the file to the hard drive. So this file will only work with an Explorist with that serial number. I've found that the Mapsend will let you alternate between two serial numbers, that's it. So I can use the program for my 500 & 210.

  18. I'd like to try to generate a list of caches along a route. When I read the instructions, it says that the route can be created in Mapsend. I can create the route there, but it wants to save it as a .wpt file. When you go to upload the file, it looks like it is looking for a .gpx file or .kml file.

How do I get Mapsend to output the right file type?

I looked at GPSBabel, but can't seem to find the right combination of settings.

    Thanks for the help.
