  1. Stuart Anderson Memorial Fund

All donations made through this page will be forwarded to the Spokane Teachers Credit Union Stuart Anderson Memorial Fund: http://www.cache-advance.com/SAMF.asp

We have been in touch with the Anderson family to share our condolences regarding Stuart's tragic accident while geocaching in the Spokane Dishman Hills Natural Area. We know that many more in the geocaching community would like to do so as well.

You can make a direct deposit to the Memorial Fund by coming into any of the Spokane Teachers Credit Union branches and doing a credit or debit card transaction at a teller window.

However, we are a world wide community; so, in partnership with the Inland Empire Geocaching Chapter we are offering an on-line collection place of donation funds for those outside of the Spokane area.

Here is a message from the family of Stuart Anderson to the geocaching community:

While we as a family are trying to cope with this tragedy, it is comforting to know that people who we have never met are sharing in our loss. Even though Stu was quite new to caching he had instantly fallen in love with it. It allowed him to put his love for the outdoors, adventure, and searching for the unknown all into one activity.

I have been told that he and his wife, Kelly, used the handle k123anderson when searching for caches. We have already set up a memorial fund in his honor. It is with Spokane Teachers Credit Union and is the Stuart Anderson Memorial Fund. We will be using donations to help with the costs associated with his memorial service and the expenses that go along with that. We have also started discussing, since he is to be cremated, that where we spread his ashes we would also like to place a plaque in memory of how great a man he is.

On a side note, I am sure that Stu would not want this event to have a negative affect on how any one views geo-caching. There is risk involved in just about everything we do in life, and this was just a tragic accident. We never know how short life can be, so use this as motivation to get out and do what you love as often as you can.

Once again I would like to express my gratitude to you and the geo-caching community.

If you decide to make a donation, you will be able to set whatever amount you desire to go to the Memorial Fund.

  4. Just saw this on the Spokesman website:

"A memorial fund for Stuart Anderson has been set up at Spokane Teachers Credit Union. Donations can be made at any branch in Anderson’s name."

So if you are able, this is one way to help the victim's family.

    Peace

Our local WSGA chapter is meeting tomorrow to see about joining this memorial fund or something else. We are also awaiting word back from the family as to what they would like.

If you would like to do something right away and not wait, I would recommend this memorial fund for the family.

  5. We are primarily trying to A ) be sensitive to the family, and B ) be sensitive to the cache owners.

We know the gentleman's real name; however, we do not yet know his caching name. Thus, we cannot help you.

As to learning *something*, the information that is freely available gives all we need to know to extrapolate any lessons.

As for the details, they will no doubt come, in time. Please be patient.

Agreed. Thank you Nelson Crew and Hydnsek for your words and understanding in this horrible time. (Edit for typo!)

  6. It looks as if Lookout Lisa may be there - You can get in touch with her as she is : Cache-Advance.com.

She carries the supplies that you seek :) And she may be able to bring what you want.

I heard she was looking into setting up a booth during the Cache Machine.

Yes, I'll be there -haven't received the green light yet on a full set up, but I can certainly bring some supplies along and connect with folks at the very least!

  7. Quick Question??? How many people will be here Friday night for a dinner get together? If I have a rough number, I'll check availability at a couple places.

Count our group in for 5: Yellow Alligator, Liwolf, Dreamcacher, Lookout Lisa and Trevor half of Trevor and Kate.

  8. GPS rating section doesn't work right. It mandates a comment after choosing stars. Entered a comment but it doesn't recognize the comment. Keeps asking for a comment.

Also, would have been nice if it would allow input of more than one GPS. We use a handheld plus a Autonav unit (nuvi 660).

Yes, I received the same error

  9. Here is my experience with the Geocacher Magazine:

Summer 07 I received an email from the editor that he’d be passing though my area (Spokane, WA) and wanted to meet with me to chat about my products and my store. We had a nice visit and I found him, his wife and their friends to be nice folks and very friendly. We had an ongoing email conversation regarding advertising in his forthcoming magazine, but I wasn’t able to justify the cost for such seemingly little exposure -not knowing at the time how VERY little!

As a sponsor (at a certain level) of Geowoodstock VI in spring 2008 I was led to believe that this magazine was producing the ‘souvenir program’ and I would receive a half page advertisement. I sent numerous emails to the editor for my ad, as directed by the Geowoodstock folks, and they were never returned. I did actually see the editor at Woodstock, but alas, I was too busy with my booth to chat (not a bad problem to have).

A few months later I received a call from another cacher that he’d seen my ad in the magazine. What? I never approved of an ad, and hadn’t even seen a proof. I didn’t even know the magazine ever went to print. THEN I received a bill for this ad! So I texted the editor, and coincidently, he and I were both in SLC the next day for the Outdoor Retailer Summer Market. I actually got a copy at the local Travel Bug Hotel in SLC, and was very dismayed at the quality of the ad –I would never have put out something so poor. I was able to track the editor down, and we had lunch. He told me that he never agreed to the Geowoodstock souvenir program, and ‘he didn’t know where my ad came from’ that was in his magazine. He told me to tear up the bill, and he then paid for my lunch. He didn’t say anything about going out of business…

That was the last I heard from him directly. So, I am glad I never PAID for any advertising. I am frustrated about the ad for my business that appeared, but apparently so few ever were circulated so probably no harm done.

And who ever said there’s no such thing as a free lunch….? :):):D
