  1. I think this is a very cool idea, but there has to be a limit. I have 10 TB's and 3 coins - not a problem. I have a friend with 733 TB's and 666 coins. I would hate to 1) wait for that map to draw and 2) it would be so cluttered that you wouldn't be able to see much at all.
  2. Geocaching is a RASH: Recreation Activity Sport Hobby
  3. Why not just use the "Recommended at night" attribute? Wouldn't that accomplish the same thing?
  4. I would have missed the reference as well.
  5. Have you asked your reviewer what's up? Maybe they've gotten word from the Lilly Pad to keep caches out of cemeteries.
  6. That's the way I interpret it.
  7. The reviewers do not check with the property owners to verify permission - that is the responsibility of the cache owner. The reviewers can tell if the location is near a sensitive location (school, freeway, etc.). Of course, I'm not a reviewer. . .
  8. Perhaps the first cache was at the top of a pile of rocks next to the trail and the rest are at trail level? We have to remember the entire journey is rated, including the last few steps.
  9. I think this is a great idea!
  10. Many cheap PDA's can be found on eBay for under $40. Since it can hold all of the information contained in the GPX file, it beats carrying paper any day.
  11. The short answer: you can't. How else are you supposed to know if there is a problem? If the messages are really a problem and you don't want the emails you do have a few options: Archive the cach. No cache = no emails. Set up a filter on your current email to push messages relating to your cache to a specific folder. Set up a secondary email account for geocaching. Many of us are using GMail. Check it when you want.
  12. I'll bite. Arrow of Light: Yes, but don't remember the year Eagle & OA: 1984 Have been: Cub Scout Committee Chairman Currently am: Boy Scout Committee Chairman, Unit Commissioner for 6 Troops, Merit Badge Counselor for 4 badges Attended Philmont adult training: 2007 (If you have the opportunity to go, GO! I took the entire family and we all had a great week!)
  13. It really depends on the type of event. Usually it is just a meet-n-greet. It's not uncommon for some or all of the attendees to go and grab some local caches - we're cachers after all! That's what we do! Bring your GPSr, perhaps with some local caches loaded up and be ready to make some new friends!
  14. The other disadvantage is that I've come across several micros with logs so small that there is no room for a sticker. Make sure you still have a pen/pencil with you!
  15. I, too, would like to filter out the ignored caches on the map. I do the PQ method mentioned above, but the filter would be cool. Since a cache, even the ignored ones, occupy their locked-sphere of influence, perhaps instead of completely hiding them on the map they could have an opacity of 10% or so. That way they are there but very faint.
  16. This sounds like one of those games on Facebook that I constantly ignore. If you are looking for someone to fight with, I would go to a regional forum or bring it up at a local event.
  17. I'm against anything that forces a cacher to make a hide. Whether it is 1.0+ "caching karma" or a cache that requires you to hide one to claim a find, they don't promote quality caches. I would rather have a handful of high-quality hides and a lower caching karma than a whole bunch of mediocre hides to inflate that arbitrary figure. Who knows that perhaps the quality of a good, well maintained, hide didn't do more for folks than the spew (I didn't say micro!) that we are seeing in urban/suburban areas now?
  18. To the OP - if you really want to play with a few of the units, go to an event and check out what GPSr's everyone brings with them. I don't know of too many cachers that wouldn't let you take theirs for a quick test-drive.
  19. If you activate your coins, you can place them in some type of book or other collection vehicle and bring them to events, allowing others to "discover" them. You also get the icons on the "Trackable" tab on your profile page. If you plan on keeping them at home, to never been seen by other cachers and don't care about the icons, then it doesn't matter. Please keep in mind that I have a few coins but I'm not a real collector.
  20. I'm not going to try and answer to which unit you should buy, but the best handlebar mounts are at RAM Mounts.
  21. Whenever I get into that situation, I just keep reminding myself that most cachers are about as lazy as I am and probably has to be an easier way to GZ. Usually we're right.
  22. It has nothing to do with an inner child. Picture a chubby, middle-aged, balding man at the playground with some electronic equipment trying to act nonchalant. Meanwhile, an over-protective mother is perched on a nearby bench watching her two precious children on the equipment. How long before she calls the authorities on a potential child-molester/abductor? Many of us don't look like we have a reason to be a playground during normal hours.
  23. I can't speak for the iHunt, but I had an iFinder Map&Music and found it to be very accurate. Our first few hides had several comments on excellent coords.
  24. I remember the Utah State Park folks promoting geocaching not too long ago.
