  1. At least you had the gumption to give that guy a piece of your mind! BTW, my entire family thinks I'm a NERD for enjoying geocaching too. Don't let the Grumpy McNasties of this world ruin it for you. Cache on!
  2. So the disguise really works! Welcome to the madness! You're going to love it!
  3. I have a Loon 160T also, and I am able to pilot it solo, but since I am "vertically challenged," and I drive a minivan, it is difficult to load without help. One thing you should consider is storage. This particular model must be stored on its end (impossible) or on its side (it just fits into our garage.) If storing outside, one must take particular caution to make sure there is no water left in it when stored, or it will become a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Canoes are always stored upside down, and are much easier to empty. While browsing the Old Town canoe site earlier, the same size canoe has double the capacity of the kayak, and only weighs 10 lbs more. The kayak also creates alot of drag while driving. I agree with many of the previous posters, go to a local shop that rents both and decide for yourself. I felt more secure in the kayak, but that's just me.
  4. For those who use them: lock n locks Not sure what the shipping will be, but the prices are much better than I've seen in the stores.
  5. I just purchased a larger-sized one on Friday at my local supermarket. They come with a lifetime guarantee. The insert gave this webiste to purchase them online: Lock n Locks Some are on sale too!
  6. Pulled two off me today, my buddy pulled at least three while caching in Randolph, NJ. What's really wierd, though, is that in 3+ hours of caching, we saw no deer. Oops, make that four for my caching buddy!
  7. The Morris County Park Commission runs after-dark hikes monthly during the full moon. They are typically held at Great Swamp OEC and Pyramid Mountain. I recently had the opportunity to visit GSOEC at night and it was a blast! (Most parks around here close at sundown.) Visit their website at: http://www.morrisparks.net/ Some are free, some cost $3. But well worth the $ to visit after dark and hear the owls, etc. Trails are really cool in the dark. Just my $.02. S.
  8. Are we a bunch of nerds or what? Thanks for dusting off my brain. S.
  9. It would be 31! over 4!, because the GC is permanent. GC(****)= 4 digits. Thanks icefall5! I'd forgotten that the first two digits were locked. S.
  10. Hmmm...if my college algebra is correct, one must use a "combination" to determine how many possible sets of 6 digits are available. To explain it simply, out of a possible 31 usable letters and numbers, and only 6 can be used for the waypoint, one has to calculate it using factorials, i.e., 31! over 6!. There are ways to eliminate duplicates, etc., but the end result is very different from what one might think is possible. We were taught "permutations" at the same time. A little different, but just as fun. ETA: I'm no brainiac, and I will welcome correction if needed.
  11. Congratulations! You're a great asset to the geocaching community!
  12. Though I'm still new to this game, I would like to nominate Chipmonks Revenge. This is a well-planned and exciting cache, and Wally gets my vote!
  13. I love it too. Gets me out with one or more members of my family, good exercise, adventure, and discovery. As soon as one caching day ends, I look forward to the next opportunity to go. Seen some really cool stuff and there's lots more to see.
  14. I agree with KBer, notify the authorities when this kind of incident occurs. Where I live, there are several rights-of-way and easements which allow certain activities by certain individuals. Recently it was noted that there was a bag of unknown origin and unknown contents located adjacent to electrical towers. Though most might have ignored it, the police were called and they investigated. No dead bodies or bombs, but these days, one can't be too careful. Thanks also to chstress, I've learned something new, and may very well explain the potato. I've learned alot from the Geocaching community, and am very grateful.
  15. Didn't you get the coordinates for the potato?
  16. Tomorrow will mark my second season of caching, and I had a few questions for you "seasoned" cachers: 1. Will my GPSr reception improve once all the leaves are off the trees? 2. Is it easier/harder to search in fall/winter? 3. Do shorter days and dropping temps affect your caching strategy? 4. How does snow/ice/slippery leaves affect your searches and/or hides? Anything else I should know about fall/winter caching? (Aside from wearing gloves to keep my hands warm instead of protection from creepy crawlies?!) Thanks!
  17. Yikes! I hope you're okay....and your GPS too. Give us an update when the swelling goes down. S.
  18. The stories are way too funny! Some of us just love to be cruel to those disgusting creatures. I know all life on the planet serves some purpose, but I fail to find a reason for the ticks existence. Anyway, the debate about tick vomit and removal got me thinking...I looked up the following sites to re-acquaint myself with tick removal procedures: CDC's info, for what it's worth Snopes, read down Today is the first time I had ever heard of tick vomit, but I now consider myself WARNED!
  19. Can't have enough 'biners! Even at the local "expensive" sporting goods store, they are only $.99. Congratulations and try to be patient!
  20. There must be a 9000K model, aimed at families, with the following feature: "I need to use the restroom NOW! (Only activates when having just passed a reststop and the nearest next reststop is 20 miles away and you are driving in an urban area.)
  21. I do carry extra empty baggies, but the problem is a wet log STAYS wet when placed in a new baggie. Best to let the cache owner know by leaving a "needs maintenance" entry.
