  2. Hello, Well I have some questions and cant seem to find local players (I'm in Norwalk, WI) to ask face to face so here goes. What I can now is a Dell X5 pocket pc with a IGPS-CF the card seems to work ok with CacheMate. I've got caching in it 500 hundred so far. I found Mapopolis downloaded it and seem to install ok, First question where do I get maps? I have looked all over. I also have a older lap top. what does Gsak do for me? Any thought on keeping it simple. thanks Jimmy Norwalk, WI.

I am confused as to what to use as to software I did download jump start from there web site. I heard I did not need a driver but am wondering how to set it up. I am also using cachmate. Thank you Jim

  6. Hi all, I wanted to ask if anyone else had this problem, one,Is geocaching.com mobile divise unfriendly or somthing? It take forever for this site to loadin my nobile brewser if at all. I thought maybe it was me so I hooked up my PPC Dell AXIM X5 runing windows 2003, my PC Thinking my mobile wifi connection was real slow. none loads a grayish page I tryd it with IE and netfront. So i thought i would ask hear as i did not see anything on the cachmate web site. Jimmy
  7. well worked like a cramp found the closet cache to my house set it as my center point, then went bsck into the menu and edited it to my home cords Jimmy
  8. I also HAVE to use it but I also cant live without it. I have no way to get the correct file format to load to my GPS and get maps without first downloading info from Geocaching.com to GSAK, then to Mapsource and THEN I can upload to the GPS. But it is the only way to prepare for a day of caching. You can sort by bearing, meaning if you want all caches going south from you you can get a list to go by which you can really do otherwise. What I also do is keep a master listing of unfound caches that I can update right from GSAK and I can choose a listing of caches to go for that day. THere are so many things you can do with GSAK that it would take too long to list them. And it is not hard to learn at all! It is so worth it! I am new, just got my membership, I have GSAK installed and wonder the same thing as the poster why use? I was putting qp's strait into CacheMate on my pocket pc without using GSAK, I going to try it to see, when you said " get maps without first downloading info from Geocaching.com " does this mean that you can get maps from GSAK? it so that's what a really need my pocket PC has a hard time loading geocaching.com web site. Jimmy
  9. Thank you for the reply. I will try that. I know most people don't use PPC's any more maybe. I think its the best money I've spent on a hobby in a long time, CacheMate that is and what you get for the money is outstanding, and the program works great. See there is a setting that I can set a cache "as the center" so I did that, Thanks that what I wanted to do is sort by distance. do you happen to remember where the link in the caches that says view cache online takes you? it brings me to geocaching.com and want me to sign in be to sign in so I did, just keeps loading the Sign in page. I was able to sign in then I ticked remember me, I went there again and it did nit remember me and I have not been able to sign in from my PPC since, A Dell AXIM X5 long the thing so far. I been reefing about CacheMate on the Smittyware.com site and hear its seems overwhelming but love the hunt Jimmy
  10. Hello, Well I am moving right a long, I got a PPC to do paperless caching registered CacheMate and downloaded me PQ's into CacheMate. I was wantering if there is a was to enter my center point manually into CaheMates plug in to see distance. I know my latitude, longitude in dismal and degrees as well as my grid square (EN43qt). I know it wont tell me anything other than how far a cache is from my home but it be nice. I am looking a used PSP units and hope to have one soon. Thank for your time Jimmy
  11. Hello, How do I install GPXSonar on my PPC (a Dell AXIM X5) its a .CAB I read about it online I just for what ever reson don't get it could someone who users it walk me threw it? Thanks Jimmy
  12. Hello, not sure if this is the right place to post this. I got a dell x5 Axim. looking around the web and on this web site, there are a number of possibilities as to paperless caching with the X5. I thought I would try a few. folks on the forum have used GPXsonar so I thought I would try that, cant fin e it for PPC so I moved on, I read about Smache in a few places on the boards, there were pretty old post. I Installed the program that seemed to dp well enough but when I tar the icon in my programs I get a Cannot find Smache and a message that's says to make sure the path is right. I am pretty sure my PPC means the requirements. The web site makes it sound really easy. any one willing to walk me threw it? All the said cachemate installed first try and once I figured out the data base unzipped my PQ and was off the races. The trail version only allows 10 caches, but I register it later and I have like 500. I just have to figure out if I can log a rine from my PPC. well I could with mobile web if nothing else if not I have to figure out how to take that information from my PPC and log it. Jimmy
  13. My advice? If you buy a GPS with paperless caching built in, ditch the Axim and just use the GPSr for everything. Thanks for the reply guys. yes I will do that with the x5. I guess the newer ones do. got to start some where Jimmy
  14. I got my hands on a Dell Axim X5 its a pretty old unit but its in good working order and I made sure I had all the cables and what not. There are many geocaching apps for pocket PCs way more than I thought. It does have wifi so I can get on the net to get PQ's and use one of the many apps out there to see everything on geocaching.com. Its also my understanding that there are GPS add on and apps to find the cache or at least get close. I may try this until I find an GPS unit in my budget. There are mixed review on it from reading on geocaching.com. There are allot more cachers out there using the GPS add on for the X5 or another PPPC in one forum or another. I am not sure I totally understand that yet. I did upgrade my member ship and got a pocket PC to at the vary least keep track of and keep updated PQ's. I can try some of these GPS apps until I get my GPS unit which will end up being a Garmin etrex in one model or another. Then use it along side my PPC to do paperless geocaching. Jimmy
  15. Hello, My name is Jimmy. I am from Wisconsin. I've wanted to try geocaching for a long time, and now have come to a point were I have the time do it. I got a Dell Axim X5 for keeping track of my cache info and I am planning to buy a Garmin e-trex @ some point this week and most likely be out trying to find caches soon. I figured I would use G-sak, on my PC and cachmate on my pocket PC and easy GPS to get the cache info into my GPS unit. My question is this, I will buy a GPS unit (I hear sometimes a GPS unit works better than a smart phone), witch I don't have hence the pocket PC. I see there are these add on GPS deals you can get for your pocket pc. How do these works for geocaching? I heard of a program called Smache I heard it was pretty nice I guess with it if you can get online you can get pocket query's with it and sync it to your GPS and your good to go. If someone had one of these GPS add on it sounds like things would be all in one unit. any thoughts on the idea of trying that? If someone else has, how did things go? there are so many apps out there it makes my head spin. I am sure I will try out many things until I find that "fit" for me as to what works. Jimmy
  16. Kryten, thanks for the walk though. Im working on getting all the down loads I need and looking for a GPS unit I am making sure the they are supported by EASY GSP Jimmy
  17. Hello I'm not sure if I am doing this right, so here goes I was giving a pocket PC and I am wondering what I need to use it for geo cashing? hear you could, I'm not a premium member yet but I will be come pay day. I am also a little confused how I would go about putting the info from the cashes in my pocket PC. I could buy a cheap GPS but knowing nothing about them and vary little about geo cashing at this point I am not sire what to get or what the GPS unit has to be able to do. my budget would be right around 40 bucks for a GPS and or course the free pocket PC thanks Jimmy
