  1. Nutty Squirrel, We cache in the same area, what was the cache?
  2. Here's the law from the Federal Avaition Regulations. Section 91.21. aExcept as provided in para b of this section no person may operate....an portable electronic device on any of the following US-registered civil aircraft: (1) Aircraft operated by a holder of an air carrier operating certificate.... b(5)Paragraph (a) of this section does not apply to-- (1) Portable voice recorders (2)Hearing aids (3)Heart Pacemakers (4) Electric Shavers; or (5) Any other portable electronic device that the operator of the aircraft has determined will not cause interference with the navigation or communicate system of the aircraft on which it is to be used. So....long story short if the pilot determines it will not cause interference its ok. Basically its up to the pilot. He has a GPS in the plane but it has been certified by the FAA that it will not cause issues with the rest of his Nav and Comm equipment. Truth be told your GPS shouldnt cause any issues whatsoever with the planes equipment becuase the electronics are all shielded. But ultimately its up to the airline and the pilot is the final word.
  3. I can hit 51 and 48 from near Boston MA for what its worth.
  4. I got my Technican HAM license in college. It was pretty easy. Just get a book and study (both you and Jr.). Get a pair of used 2 m handhelds with a 5W transciever and you'll have plenty of range
  5. UPDATE: I was able to get 51 lound and clear on the GPSr tonight. I had 7' of accuracy. 48 had good strength but it was blinking in and out and wouldn't lock on. I assume by the end of the month we'll be able to get 51 and 48 lound and clear on the East Coast.
  6. I had just the opposite about 5 min ago here in Eastern MA. I got 51 loud and clear, lots of "D"'s on the satellites. 48 was blinking but wouldn't lock it in. But 51 was able to correct it within 7'
  7. GPSr is in like new condition. It was purchased in June. I just posted it on ebay. $100 buy it now. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...E%3AIT&rd=1
  8. I have been looking all over for Crown Royal Special Reserve. I haven't been able to find it since I left OK, every time I ask anyone in the MA liquor stores if they have it they look at me like they've never heard of it.
  9. Success on the GPS 60 in Lexington, MA! Here's what I did: 1. First I reset the unit, then I hit the menu button on the satellite screen and hit New Location. 2. I made sure WAAS was turned on. 3. I stood in the parking lot facing to the S.E. and used my body to shield reception from 35. 4. It took about 5 - 10 minutes for the GPSr to cycle through all the WAAS birds. It started on 35 and it would hop up two satellites trying to find the WAAS birds, eventually it incremented its way up to 50 and 51 and finally it locked onto 51
  10. Up for grabs! Like new etrex Legend package. $100 Handlebar mount and Caribiner Holster Paypal or Personal Check accepted. ckwhitman AT comcast DOT net
  11. Here's a link that shows what the different US Currencies look like the non US Geocacher's out there. The $2 note is something that is rarely seen is day-to-day commerce and most folks will hold onto them if they happen to get one. As far as I know, we've never had a $2 dollar coin unlike our Canadian friends to the North. http://www.bep.treas.gov/section.cfm/4 As far as coins, we have three different $1 coins in normal circulation The oldest, and largest is the Dwight D. Eisenhower Dollar which is silver in color and has a picture of the an Eagle landing on the Moon if I recall correctly. I usually keep 'em if I come across them. Minted '71-'78 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eisenhower_Dollar The next is the Susan B. Anthony Dollar which is roughly the same size as quarter. Its silver in color. I love handing these to the teenage cashiers at the burger joints and confusing the hell out of them. You dont come across these very often. The have the same reverse as the Eisenhower. Minted '79,'81,'99 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Susan_B._Anthony_Dollar The newest is the Gold colored Sagagwea dollar and were first minted in 2000 I believe. IMHO they were only made so change could be given from the Postal Stamp vending machines becuase that's the only place I ever get them. http://www.usmint.gov/mint_programs/index....den_dollar_coin I've always been a fan of the John F. Kennedy Half-Dollars. They're the perfect size for a "lucky coin" Long story short, Id definately like to find unique coins in a geocache. Feel free to throw in a 1943 Steel Penny and I'll be sure to swipe it. On an unrelated note I found a cache today and while I was pulling it out I wondered why it was so heavy. It was loaded with about $5 worth of pennies....wierd.
  12. I would highly recommend having the following items with you when you geocache: Good hiking boots / shoes ~$100 A Camelback with storage to hold: ~$70 Sunscreen ~$5 Insect Repellent ~$5 Cell phone Spare set of batteries for your GPS ~$5 Pens and geocaching sheets
  13. I saved a page and tried to open it and it was all messed. How good are you skills with MS Paint? You could take a screen shot, open the image in MS Paint and just change the coordinates.
  14. Check that it's set to the proper datum: WGS-84. There should be an option to do a new search for the satellites. Try doing that and letting the gps reset the satellite almanacs. Check your owners manual
  15. I'm in Lexington, MA. I did a reset on my eTrex legend by telling it I was in a new location and letting it search. After a little while it picked up 51 with a fairly good signal from the South East Sky just past the first ring (30-45 deg elevation?). Once it started getting correction signals it went to 14' accuracy with in a few minutes. I've got it sitting in the back window of the car to see if it gets any better.
  16. If you're from Littleton, we probably cache in the same area how does yours perform in the typical Mass. tree cover?
  17. Im not overly concerned with having a map. I use my laptop gps and Streets and Trips for road navigation. I guess what I should have asked is if the reciever performs better.
  18. Currently I have a Garmin eTrex Legend GPS (the transparent blue one) which has served me fairly well for Geocaching and tracking my bicycle rides. So far I've liked: *Easy to use *Works great mounted on the bike handlebars (speed and odometer function) *Lightweight *It was only $149 at REI What I haven't liked: *Takes a long time to sync up on a cold boot up *Any decent amount of tree cover can cause the GPSr to loose satellite signal or be fairly inaccurate (50 - 100') this of course makes the Cache hunt become more of a chore than a fun thing to do. I'm considering upgrading to the Garmin GPS 60 (the yellow one) for the following reasons: *Similar features to the eTrek *Helix antenna which supposedly gives you better reception, quicker sync times I'm not concerned with having a base map or a color display. Have any of you out there upgraded from an eTrex to a GPS 60 unit?
