  1. I'm sure that it's in your local outdoors stores, but it won't be called permethrin. It'll be under various familiar brand names such as OFF, Repel, and Outer's. The stuff is in spray cans, so read the descriptions on the cans for what they contain and how to use them. The ones that specifiy not using it on skin are the ones that contain permethrin, which should be sprayed only on clothes. I've found the stuff effective for keeping skeeters off of me.
  2. You were attacked by GeoGiests, no doubt about it!
  3. He just wants a "piece of the rock." (Why does Bob Segar's "Like a Rock" run through my head when I view this thread?)
  4. I killed my GPS III+ by leaving it in the vehicle all of the time. After a couple of years of that it had a BIOS failure during real cold weather. I still have though because Garmin fixed it at no charge.
  5. "Bag"? I have yet to go after any caches where I need to carry that much cargo. The GPS, PDA, compass, and water go either into pockets or on my belt. I'm a big believer in travelling light.
  6. On the idea of a reversable blaze ornge/camo vest: Hunters have had such a thing for many years, which is useful depending on the season and what you are hunting for. However, a reversable vest with many pockets would be clumsy at best. Now turkey hunters have the right idea on this, since they use speaciatly vests with many pockets for turkey calls and other gear. One thing that those camo vests include is either blaze orange panels that can be snapped or zipped onto the vest, or those panels are stitched into the pockets. When you need them, pull them out. With this idea, a cheap fly fisherman's vest that's either tan or green can be cheaply modified with the addition of a couple of squares of orange stitched into the pockets. Or, you can do like I do and whip out the orange hat when you wnat to be more visible.
  7. Perhaps you got it backwards. The number of post you have here could bery well be related to your contributions to Geocaching.
  8. I just got a cgi error from the server when acessing the headers in this forum. Methinks that you experienced a similar server blip with that cache. Part of the growing pains here, and I've found that hitting the Refresh button often clears things up.
  9. You can search by ZIP code and coordinates. With mapping software, you find the coordinates for a location, such as a town or street address, and use that as the center of your search. Takes a little more effort, but can be done easily enough.
  10. I took a look at the cache coordinates in question and can see why the approver was questioning the location. Mapping software shows that whole area as state park land for which this web site requires permission for placing a cache. I'm sure the questioning wasn't meant to harass, but just to be sure about the location. Keep in mind that there has been trouble in the past with caches being placed where they are forbidden, and the approvers are trying to protect the sport. If the state lands are open to the public, then even better, it shouldn't be a problem with people crossing them.
  11. Trades are generally reported as to what was took and what was left. It's part of the fun to see when/who grabs your trade items, and what's popular. That being said, I rarely trade because that's not why I'm doing it. It fun to see what the caches contain, and if I see something I want I'll trade for it. But not often.
  12. Imitation cell phone. Can you hear me now?
  13. .... and I can add to this thread that there's a local cache in my area that is right next to a letterbox. I signed the log in the letterbox and still have yet to go back and find the "real" cache.
  14. You didn't say what unit you have, but here's a couple of ideas on this. There might be a setting in menus to tell the unit what battery type is installed so that it knows how to meter it. The other idea is that if it's 4 batteries in there, then they might have problems with the connection between them becoming broken. All batteries are not built to precisely the same dimensions and this has been a problem in the past with various electrical devices. There is a spacer unit that you can get to put between stacked pairs of batteries to pervent the lost power connection.
  15. This guy says that I look like Bill Gates and sound like Howard Stern!
  16. I drive a Class B motorhome (van sized) that has all of the normal conveniances that you would find in a larger motorhome. It doesn't really have a trunk in it, but I do haul the kitchen sink wherever I go. As far as storage goes, there's stuff that I've forgotten about in the cabinets, drawers, and other hidey holes all over the vehicle.
  17. "Gas"? I can walk to the two caches nearest to where I live.
  18. It was probably modified due to the use of the word Chit. You missed the party of the past few days. Wow I guess I have. Been working on the homestead. What's wrong with "chit"? There's two ways to pronounce it, both phonetically correct.
  19. GSAK will do it as well. I found that out unintentionally today.
  20. All I do is make sure that someone doesn't see me retrieve the cache or hide it again. I don't worry about any seeing me handling the cache once I have it.
  21. I don't even bother with manually marking the forums as "read" because it will happen automatically when I quit the website. That's actually an annoyance for me because I would prefer to have the option of marking only the forums that I have visited and leave the others until I can get around to them. As far as navigation goes, learn to use keyboard shortcuts along with the mouse. When I'm in the forums, I only use the mouse to follow links, otherwise I have my hands on the keyboard. Easier done on the laptop since it has the mouse on the keyboard.
