  1. Perish the thought. If that occurs, it could kill the sport. Everybody would have to sign release forms then.
  2. I have left my GPS III+ out in the vehicle in all sorts of temperatures, never a problem with the LCD. I don't think it's ever been exposed to freezing temps lower than - 15 F in all that time. When the GPS does chill to below freezing temps the screen might display dimly, or not at all until it warms up. Even then it might be slow until the innards warm up more.
  3. Which ever Garmin unit you have, you'll have to get a cable that will allow you to hook up the GPS to the laptop. It might be best to get a combination cable that would allow you to plug the GPS into the vehicle's power socket. You could do the same for the laptop by plugging it into a power invertor. Add a mapping software program and you're all set.
  4. I don't worry about it. There have been a few occasions where the GPS gto dropped, no damage to the screen. Then there was one occasion where I slipped on a wet wood deck while holding the GPS, the screen hit the deck hard! No damage.
  5. I have had my GPS shut down due to bumps (not mere vibirations) that the bike wheels hit. That was because the batteries inside moved enough to break the connection. A different brand of batteries that fit better solved that one for the most part.
  6. I think that any software mapping program that interfaces with a GPS can do this, and possibly better than Google Earth. Most of them have a built in distance tool, so you can simply divide that to get the mid point.
  7. Gotta have permission to use private property. All business properties are private property (owned by an entity) even though the public is allowed.
  8. An old GPS III+ with the Garmin handlebar mount works well for me.
  9. iPaq 3955, it has been a really reliable unit (almost never reset it anymore). I figure on it lasting me another couple of years before there's a need to upgrade.
  10. I've had no trouble using my GPS on Southwestern. Helped to pass the time, and it's interesting to see the route that the flight takes and compare it to previous flights.
  11. Thanks Sputnik, I didn't know about nRoute. Since I'm on the road currently, I'll be checking it out.
  12. Not a life style for me, I've simply lost interest for the time being. No idea what's behind that either. I decided to drop back into the forums here for the first time in a long time to see if I'm still interested. Perhaps if I find something new going on in geocaching....
  13. I've been out of it for a while, thanks for the heads up!
  14. Hunting ammo wouldn't create much in the way of noticable dust either. I have handled bags of pure lead shot used for reloading shotgun shells and never had any dust from them. Ammo boxes once they have been emptied are simply something to dispose of, so no effort is made to keep them clean.
  15. The lead used in the military ammo is hardened enough that it won't crumble into dust, and any amounts would be minuscule. It is still a good idea though to wash out the boxes, and an added reason not to leave food in a cache.
  16. When you give the coordinates to someone who's asking for directions.
  17. I've managed to make it through the year so far without getting poison ivy. I only have to make it to the first killing frost now...
  18. Read the GPS units and software forum some good discussions and ideas.
  19. I like it, doesn't distract at all for me.
  20. I have one computer cranking out SETI work units, and the rest doing cancer research for United Devices, which will be much more beneficial to mankind. http://www.grid.org/projects/cancer/
  21. I've had close calls with rattlers myself and they always ran from me. (I'm meaner than a snake in the grass). I can see that you were still pretty wound up over your encounter, you didn't put a period in there anywhere.
  22. Doing that makes me nervous because a couple of times I started to leave without first picking up the unit. I always put it in the belt pouch or in my pocket.
