  1. Well here ya go, my ten closest unfound. 1. 10.5 miles N got to cross the Humber Bridge, perhaps a round trip of >60 miles. 2. 10.8 miles N ditto. 3. 11.8 miles SW virtual, only ever logged one in my early days! 4. 12 miles E another virtual over the bridge again, answer can be found on the internet! 5. 13.6 miles NW over the bridge again. 6. 14.4 miles NW another virtual. 7. 14.9 miles NW over the bridge again, virtual/multi trail in city centre. 8. 17.9 miles NW over the bridge again. 9. 20.4 miles NW over the bridge again. 10. 20.9 miles NW over the bridge again. Looks like I am going to have to pay the toll on the most expensive bridge in England doesn't it.
  2. I like Geocaching, because I get to let off steam and rant about what kind of fool would hide a cache there, rather than bring it up on the forum!!!!
  3. You may also want to go to the Magellan website and download the software update( really a firmware update) if it has not already been installed, look for Ver.3.15 at switch on. Linky For this you will need a data cable, one for a Sportrack or Meridian will do if you cant get the GPS 300 series one Or if handy with a soldering iron you could always make one up. The data cable also comes into its own when you want to download lots of waypoints for caches later when the geocaching bug really bites. Eedit for speeling.
  4. Ok, nice one DRC but I understand if you are going to use the Geocaching Logo and Lets go Geocaching you must make it a clickable link under the site Terms of use. Otherwise, well done and good luck.
  5. I tend to favor my 315 over my Meridian color for the final run in to the cache, the accuracy should be just as good as any other GPSr, i.e. 15 to 30 feet at the point it indicates you are at the cache. As has been said before, when you are less than 30 ft out put away the GPSr and start looking. With the 315 you will get better results if it has the last firmware update installed (Ver. 3.15), which is still available on the Magellan website if you search for it. With Ver.3.15 you get a distance to waypoint countdown in feet below 0.1 miles and the point at which the 315 stops averaging (thinking it is stood still)when you move is is lower, about 0.2 mph I think.
  6. I said it privately, with Eckington locking his post I presumed he did not want any public follow up.
  7. This is the thread Whats going on here? 2 that raised the topic, though rather a lot to read!
  8. This kind of thing has already raised some steam in the General Geocaching Forums, pocket caches etc. along with multiple logs on event caches by the same user, and also the logging of coins and TB's from lists at events. While I try to understand these practices, they are not for me and rather degrade the whole geocaching thing altogether.
  9. Mine is simply a pic of my GPSr filched from the Magellan website with a picture of the tools of the (geocaching) trade pasted in the screen. Occasionally I have used sheep's head, which I adopted during a time in the forum of some serious trolling, when we were all accused of being sheep. Off topic, but it does not fit in the sig lines topic , at the same time I used the sig line: Two heads are better than one, even if one is a sheeps head! Something a work collegue would say when he needed help to solve a problem.
  10. I try and say something for each cache I do, sometimes it is a few words and somtimes it is more. I suppose the more I enjoy a cache the more I say. What I find disapointing is when you get a number of logs on your own caches which are obviously cut and paste. A recent example: I dont think I have ever used cut and paste.
  11. Yeah, carry on Peter and Dave you're doing alright. When I have had enough I will let you know!
  12. You could also try adding a second serial port to your pooter. Maplin supply a PCI rs232 serial port with db9 connector for just under £20, catalogue number ZT21X. I also recall PC World recently had something similar for less than £2.00. I would think that this way may be less problematic, unless you are afraid of going inside your machine.
  13. I would expect that the base map would just show the basic white map, as does my European Basemap Meridian when outside of Europe. There is no reason why you should not be able to use the backtrack to get home to base again, also marking poi's for reference as you move around. Oh by the way, the last time I was in Venice all the streets were flooded!
  14. Remember Joe, there are no dumb questions only dumb anwers. This is the getting started forum ask what you need to know.
  15. ROFL I doubt very much that he was! I was ROF Was that ROFC or ROFY
  16. I have recently gone back to using my Magellan 315 for the final run in to the cache, as I found it better at putting me nearer the spot than my Meridian Colour. Now I use the Meridian for the road navigation and pick up the 315 to find. Get your friend a 315, then get the firmware update to version 3.15 and install it if it has not been updated already. The update is still available on the Magellan website but you may have to look for it. If you dont have a data cable you can construct one simply from a few bit and bobs.
  17. ROFL I doubt very much that he was!
  18. I have recently compared my Magellan Meridian and my old 315, and the slingshot effect was less pronounced in the 315. I have decided to use the Meridian to navigate on the road and the 315 for the hunt. Using this technique on my last few caches I found the cache quicker than using the meridian alone.
  19. If you need to dig or use a tool to make a hole to hide a cache, that is not allowed by the guidelines. You may use an existing hole, but again you should not enlarge it. Also check that any hole you do use is not a animal hole in use or an animal run, disturbing the habitat of wildlife should be avoided for the sake of animals and cachers.
  20. Just as you found when choosing your GPSr there was a great deal the same about Garmin and Magellan units, customer service is probably in a similar vein. You only tend to see the horror stories, most satisfied customers dont post thier experiences. Though on balance there does seem to less satisfaction with Thales (Magellan) in the USA than elsewhere. Remember that there is a wealth of information available to you via these forums, you only have to ask the questions. The only thing that cant be done is fix it if you really break it, so love your GPSr and treat it with care. Then you may never need customer services anyway.
  21. No, you choose the name for your cache. The site just gives it a unique identifier or waypoint name, e.g. GC900C. That allows you to store many waypoints on your GPSr each one having a different ID #.
