I was confronted by a horse and rider on a very narrow and clearly signposted footpath a couple of years or so ago. I had to back into the bushes to let her pass. When I politely pointed out that she shouldn't be riding a horse on the aforementioned footpath I was treated to a whole load of bad language, the polite version of which was that it was her effing land and she would ride her effing horse wherever and when ever she effing well felt like it. Does being the landowner entitle you to ignore the restrictions of any public RoW that crosses your land? On some local footpaths near me there are signs posted by the local council, these warn that riding of horses is a trespass against the landowner. The notice appears to read that you may ride along the footpath with the landowners permission, but you would still be liable for any damage caused to the path. So even a landowner riding thier own horse would be liable for damage on thier own land. Remember a landowner has a duty to maintain the footpaths over thier land and not to block or prevent there use. I would expect the same applies to mountain bikes too.

You might try this if you use a USB to Serial adaptor and you wish to use a lower comport number as many adaptors install with high numbers like 6, mine was 16. This works with my laptop running Vista home premium and a Prolific chipset USB/serial adaptor, and is useful if you have an older piece of software that only recognises com1 to com4. Assuming you have the correct drivers installed: With your device plugged into a USB port, Open Device Manager in windows Control Panel. Select Ports (COM & LPT) by clicking on the [+] on the left, You should see your adaptor listed if it is installed correctly, right click on it and select properties. Choose the Port Settings tab and click on the advanced button. At the bottom of the window, click the dropdown list to the right of COM Port Number and choose a free comport. Click OK twice and then close Device Manager Your Comport should now be the number you chose. This should also work in Windows XP too. adrianjohn

I would prefer not to find a cache wrapped in a bin liner or any kind of plastic bag. Sure you may think that it adds protection, but after a time the inside of the bag becomes wet too and very smelly. The bag and box become upleasant to handle, and the stink gets on your hands and will not disappear even after washing several times. A good cache container can protect your log book and contents without very much of a problem for a long time. So long as you put special items and your logbook in small ziplock bags inside your cache a small amount of moisture inside the container will do no harm. I have had a cache in the same tupperware type container since 2002 when I first placed it, I have never used a plastic bag. It has had some small amounts of water in it at times, usually when the last finder has not been careful when replacing the lid. Regular maintenance and also responding to reports of problems as soon as they arise has ensured its survival.

Its been there a while now, and I hoped it would have been spotted and fixed already. All that is needed is to put on seperate lines the Geocaching.com Google map link and the Streetmap.co.uk link for pages in the UK. I know that they are not the same thing, and two links are joined on the same line, but others may not realise that it is so.

I don't recall one specifically for unfound caches but I do recall one for visiting neglected caches that hadn't had visits for ages, or something like that. I too count myself lucky. Hunting alone one day I attempted to approach a cache from an alternative direction instead of going to the recommended parking place. (I like to do things the hard way) Following the arrow, I stepped over a low point in a wooden fence that looked a bit like a broken stile. I was soon waist high in brambles so decided to get out quickly. Not wanting to backtrack I went for a gap in the hedge about 50ft away, I had barely taken two steps toward the gap when my left leg plunged down a fissure in the ground I was walking on. My right leg with knee bent behind me, was pressed into the middle of my back and my rucsack was forced upwards with the waist strap around my chest. It took me quite sometime to escape my rucsack and then struggle out of the hole. With a horribly damaged knee I dragged myself back to my car counting my lucky stars. Nobody knew where I was, and I didn't have my mobile phone with me, it was left in the car. I cried at my own stupidity!
