  1. ...

Nice to see that the German Company Daimler-Chrysler still manufactures some models in America.  Then again, so do Toyota and Honda.

    ...

    Yeah...using Japanese parts.

Jeeps have a very high percentage of parts made in the USA. And they are perfect for GEOCACHING. (Gotta mention geocaching now and then.)

Yes on Jeeps, but only the Rubicon is truely nearly prepared for offroad conditions. It still needs to be lifted some, and better tires placed on it.

    Before it can go Geocaching!!

  2. oh i feel so sorry for you all....

    NOT!!!!!!!!!!

in the Uk we are paying about £1 per litre, or about $2 per litre. so that would be over $8 per gallon.

    and your moaning about $2.20!!!!!

have you ever thought of getting cars with better fuel econemy? we dont drive 6 litre engined trucks cos they cost too much to run. a 2 litre engine can be just as powerful if built properly.

    well:

    1) I think some of our refineries may supply some of the european industries, so just wait for the price "tidal wave" to hit there too.

    2) Better fuel milage BECAUSE you have many diesel transportation engines, that polute a whole lot more, than the petrol (gasolene) engines that are sold here. Better fuel milage BECAUSE the safety equipment we have is more heavy on vehicles, thus reducing milage. I would love to import a higher MPG vehicle to the USA, but I can not due to these factors.

    ********

Solution: A hybred diesel engine (like the Toyota Prius, only diesel) that has Lithium Ion batteries (to charge them with house electricity over night), and that is covered with solar panels. Maybe get 250 MPG, and burn Vegitable Oil instead of just petrol.

  3. Absolutely!! I think the idea of going to ten hour days for two weeks as a temporary market move, would be perfect.

BUT it is not politically correct to ask that be done. Then all those delivery companies, and retail businesses would have 20% loss.

You subtract one place, and it gets added another way. That extra gasolene cost is not disappearing into a bank savings account for oil executives.

  4. Okay what percentage is that?? And what does that really mean?

You were paying $2.49 not you are paying $3.09

so you had a jump in the last month of

    1 - 249/309 = 20%

Lets say you get 20 MPG and you drive 20,000 miles per year. So how much do you spend in a year?? 20,000/20 = 1000 gallons

which is $3090 PER YEAR. You were spending $2490 per year.

So now it is $500 more per year (maybe it will go to $1000 more per year this year).

Maybe it's time to give up smoking? and save money. Give up gambling and save money. Give up eating at restaurants and save money. Give up designer cloths for the kids, and save money. Sell that second home and save money. Go on one less cruise and save money.

  5. Next time you find yourself at a cemetery cache, look at the dates -- they cluster at the very young and the very old. If you've made it past infancy -- and that's most of you -- your odds look pretty good.

absolutely right. Time to have some beer and sausages!! (ha!! ha!! Actually I do not eat that, and I only drink once a month maybe)

  6. Personally I am shocked at what the human body can handle. My fiancee is still a smoker (will chain her up for a week someday to stop her!! ha!! ha!!), and I have relatives who have smoked for years. They still seem pretty functional, and can get around relatively fast to the daily activities that they wish to accomplish. (given suspicious health).

Medical establishment would have you believe that everyone over 45 that is overweight, smokes, and doesn't exercise, is a DEAD MAN WALKING. Yet only one out of four of my grandparents had trouble after reaching 66 years old, and my two grandfathers made it until 80 plus and they both were heavy smokers.

Maybe they could have hit 100 years old if they exercised, and did not smoke, and maintained healthy body weight. Who knows. But when you get to a certain age, you know that life will end, and you resolve to let nature take it's course. Not saying that old people have a death wish, but instead that they are happy to have lived a productive successful, interesting life, given the random chances for medical issues to occur.

Bottom Line: I bet we could all push ourselves even farther with risky health behaviors; but who has the time to eat all those McDonald Whoppers!! ha!! ha!!

  7. I am seeing numerous requests for searches from persons who do not have the desire (at least not yet) to become an expert on the use of GSAK.

If you would be willing to run searches here for people, and then email them a list of caches (or bookmark them maybe?) , please mention that here. Maybe even people could generate a PDF file of the resulting map, and email it to the requestor?

I hope that would not be against any posting policy. Not trying to make this a habit for anyone, but rather trying to get more people interested in doing complex searches on their own, once they see how interesting they can be with the results from GSAK. I am sure that complex serachs will eventually be automatic.

I can run maybe one or two searchs a day, as long as I am motivated to do so (if I have the time, and desire). I can do:

    1) a route optimization search. Need point A and point B. The result will be a driving path between those two points that is optimized for minimum time, and maximum caches along the route. The maximum time limit assumed will be double the time taken for a no stop drive along the same route (or whatever is requested by the person wanting the search to be completed).

    2) or a specialty search. Like find all the night caches near a town. Or find all the water caches near a town, within a certain radius.

If someone can already do the cache search with existing web tools, then that would be expected to be accomplished by the requestor, not the expert.

I am thinking that an expert could do any search and creat a list, and a map in maybe five minutes? It would be good practice too!!

  8. I am able to take routes (with EXITS as STOPS) saved as Streets & Trips maps, and import them as route filters. This works so well.

Getting the waypoints for the highway exits improves the filter function to a significant factor.

Yes I know that Streets & Trips costs a little, but this works even with the older cheap versions.

  9. I think I have been able to perfect using Microsoft Streets & Trips (S&T), and the Geocaching Swiss Army Knife (GSAK) applications to optimize caches along a route. This is all based on the discussions discussed here in various message threads, and the ST2GPX application.

I have a route of about 160 miles along the interstates (highways) that was "worked" to decrease hours driven, while increasing the amount of caches driven to.

Still working this, so I welcome tips!! I did not include instruction sets other have created here, as they have done a great job, so study them first.

    Here are the tips:

    1) Start with S&T. Create a route. Add EXITS as stops (this takes a little practice, but is possible in S&T). Save the map as an S&T map. Close S&T.

    2) Convert the saved S&T map to a GPX file, via the ST2GPX application.

    3) Open GSAK (make sure it is loaded with all the possible waypoints in the area). Open the filter function/ ARC-POLY page (you might wish to select only waypoints with low difficulty). Import the saved GPX file in the previous step.

    4) Select POINTS not the ARC function. Also select a small distance from list of points (I selected 0.5 mile). Run the filter.

    5) Export the waypoints to a S&T PUSHPINS list (aka *.CSV file) from GSAK. Close GSAK.

    6) Open S&T and create your directions from your point A to point B. Then import your PUSHPINS as STOPS. Run directions again.

If you can practice the above, you should have an optimized directions to your waypoints. This would be all along your pre-planned travel route.

  10. I have all these devices working together: Palm Tungston E; Garmin Legend; Toshiba Laptop PC. They all talk perfectly. This is what I do:

    1) Create POCKET QUERIES as a premium member of GEOCACHING.COM that are emailed to me in a zip file format.

    2) You then can unzip the files to a *.GSX file on your desktop, and drop the file into CACHEMATE CONVERT. After processing, this will be uploaded to your Palm.

    3) Then you can type in the coordinates to your GPS, as displayed on Cachemate which is running on your Palm.

    Alternative:

    4) Open the GSX files with GSAK. Then you can run further filters on the caches via GSAK.

    5) GSAK can upload the waypoints to your GPS. That is built into GSAK.

    6) GSAK can upload the waypoints (and the description, notes, past logs, etc.) to CACHEMATE running on your Palm. Again this is built into GSAK.

    7) GSAK can upload waypoints to your mapping software (like Microsoft Streets & Trips). Then you can print a map, with the route you are traveling, and the list of waypoints nearby.

    Have a geeky day!!

  11. Yes, in Microsoft Streets & Trips I can click on exits to create PUSHPINS. Then I can export the PUSHPINS (with a third party software). Just like in Mapsource (sort of).

BUT when I am in Streets & Trips I can also create a route with STOPS of all the exits on a highway. I can not get a way to export the STOPS as Lat-Long list of exits.

  12. Does anyone know how to extract highway EXITS as waypoints (Lat & Long) into a waypoint file, from any of the map ploting software tools? I was trying to determine how in Streets & Trips (S&T) but all I can do is create a file with all the exist as STOPS. If I could somehow convert the STOPS to PUSHPINS I would have it, but their seems to be no way to do this.

Any ideas? I feel I am so close. Any GPS experts out their who know how to do this?

  13. Is there a way to search caches for the oldest active geocachers? I was thinking of a search for the caches placed by people who have been actively caching for a few years.

A filter for this could show these caches, and would come in handy, as I can trust some to do a great job with a location/location/location (as the real estate agent says), while new people tend to hide caches in less dramatic locations.

Yes, yes, I am looking for "drama" in the cache locations, which I believe comes from experience with caching. This is almost like a personal ranking of cache quality based on the experience of the cachers.

Some kind of do this now (not automated) by filtering out caches placed by certain individuals, and by filtering out microcaches. Just looking to see how elaborate people get with filtering schemes, for cache lists.

  14. Does anyone have experience with the GSAK Arc Poly filter function? I had a friend mention that they put in all the highway exit waypoint locations (not sure how they got those) and then did a plot of caches based on that.

I just do not know how to find a way to download all the latitude logitude locations of the highway exits. Anyone out their with experience?

  15. Okay I admit that I am overweight, but I would think that active cachers would be relatively thin, like marathon folks. (I am not that active a cacher). I am not seeing thin folks. Maybe caching gets your apetite a little more active?

I guess this is perception. I just remember when I was younger and trying to climb all the mountains in the northeast (aka 4000 footers club), that all the folks I passed on the trails were relatively thin. Maybe these digital cameras are making us look heavy?

Or maybe we have all been super-sized by the evil "micky Ds". OR maybe I have been watching "model type" folks too often on the tele. Or maybe I am bored with a lame opinion on a lame issue to discuss.

  16. When will Searchable attributes, or PQ attributes be available? I saw six months ago that attributes were activated, but I see nothing about searching being tested, or in beta?

  17. I just use two cell phones. They are so cheap now. The fiance and I each have our own (we both work jobs where we need them), plus I gave one to me 16 year old.

I have cell phone coverage most places (definately live in an urban area).

For rural you need the radios.
