  1. I live in Md but I travel cross country regularly so I have registered on several states forums so that I can utilize them for gaining help or info for when I will be in that state. Is that a NO NO? I have never had problems before but last month I tried to register on Nevada's forum but never got a confirmation. I had to contact a cacher from out there to post this info on the site in hopes that it could be resolved. He was very helpful however NO follow up in the thread by an administrator or contact from 1. I thought that was pretty rude. Any input here on this? TY
  2. Richard (Lord British) has listed his newest cache adventure. The reviews are great & those that have done this unique cache have nothing but stellar comments. I am hoping to get down that way real soon to visit my cousin who is a friend of Richard (through working at NASA) & introduced us. Should be a great adventure. Here is the link to the newest cache http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...30-2ef84af70b11
  3. I think the best thing that could be done in response to this thread would be to lock it. It has become quite offense & far from being constructive at this point. HOW ABOUT IT ADMIN. ENOUGH HERE ALREADY!
  4. I do a similar thing as Cassandy. I print out the area, then I will ID the caches Im goign to look for. From there I then take it a step further. I draw my own maps in closer detail. If there is an area that is cache rich I will do little inserts on the back of the page or in the margins. Yes it takes longer but it is all part of my fun thing. It actually helps in the long run too because then when Im out on the rd I can recall the details, street names etc to know where Im going. Yes I have my car GPS but to see the detail I would need to have my reading glasses on, tough to go back & forth to them while driving, so I depend on memory. It's bit anal but then I also color code my notes so........to each its own yeah? Happy mapping Cass....
  5. Its also a pain f it is a pay to park garage. Find a nice place for a cache & make it worth the trip for everyone.
  6. My 1st stick was a 5ft piece of heavy doll (sp). The closet poles!. I hand carved out my geonick as well as other decorative items. Lightly sanded it then stained it & sealed it. It is actually light weight but strong enough to help in pole vaulting creeks, wedging up rocks I wont reach into, knocking a critter out of the tree without being close enough to be bitten as well as giving someone a good head wack, knee cracker or a healthy jab in the....stomach without being close enough to grab. Total cost was less than $10.
  7. This is just too funny. I thought I was the only 1 who had crap like this happen. Its been a rough day today & when I read this I just laughed. I have nothing productive to add but to say you helped me end my day with a belly laugh. TY & good night all.
  8. vds - wish I could have seen what your link showed. Im not a PM so I couldnt view it. : > (
  9. I dont expect someone to log a find, FTF or not, as they find the cache. Unless you are one of those folks with all the little modern trinkets that allows you to do so then when you finish your caching for the day, very soon after that I would think would just be a courtesy. Folks that may be on vacation & no access to wireless or no PC with them then there is nothing you can do. However those that go out, cache & then just dont post their logs for days & days & weeks & months are just lazy, inconsiderate jerks. As a CO I have received logs from folks anywhere from several wks to as much as a yr later. If its going to take you that long to log caches why bother?
  10. TWU: no no, never a snob : > ) Some folks will be resentful no matter how diplomatic a topic is broached. The gal I was speaking about had great locations for her caches & good ideas just executed poorly. ie; a nano in a piece of broken tree branch. An ok concept except the branch piece was rotted & full of bugs then just dropped amongst the other dead debris. I suggested that perhaps she find a god piece of branch, treat it so it wouldnt get bug infested & try that. yes it meant some extra work but she did that & it has been there now for almost a yr with regular visits & logs. Since that time she even sent me an email asking my opinion on another cache she wanted to place. All in all, a compliment for me & in turn I think a CO with better caches now. It only cost me a few mins to send the email so nothing lost & alot gained. As for the other cacher you mentioned.....we cant help them all but as an experienced cacher we can try to help improve some & bring the over all standards back up.......just a thought. : > )
  11. I have to say I never really gave thought to the cacher needing to know size to determine swag to leave. When I cache I have my little ditty bag that has all different size swag in it to give me choices to fit the cache. I rarely take just 1 thing with me to leave. By the way, there is no such thing as "Unknown" size. There is "Not Listed", and there is "Other (see description)". My bad on choice of words here knowschad : > ) My concern for listing size was for effort of looking & where. Is it your normal nano with nothing but existing surroundings to hide it or is it a nano or slightly bigger but smaller than a 35mm hidden in a leftover shell of a box turtle or a fake reptile (which I personally wouldnt use because I hate slithers) or a mock chunk of mushroom amongst a large patch of tree hugging shrooms. To date I list it either as a micro or other with the 1st line of the write up as 'not your typical nano ........' That has seemed to work well & no one has left any nasty notes that they didnt find it because they didnt know what size it was. I appreciate all of the input. TY
  12. I except the fact that if Im going for a FTF I might not be but when it was found several days before & still isnt logged for whatever reason thats not fun.
  13. Interesting. I guess I'm pretty lucky. We just got our first soft-coorder ever in my area. And it's a teenaged kid who has never interacted with any Geocachers. So that'll tell you he came up with this great idea on his own. I've already ignored two, and a third that is in a store parking lot I would have ignored anyways. Can I ignore that one twice? Direct quote from one of his cache pages: "I marked the coords off to make this one tricky." With this 1 I think I would send an email to the young person & share the better way to do this. We had a new cacher in our area who did a cache like this. I sent her an email explaining this is not the best way to approach cache placement & write up. She was thankful for the inout as she didnt really know & has made the corrections. Her caches are now fun to hunt.
  14. I took my Beagle with me 1 time when I knew I was only doing a short run. OMG how funny The breed, being hunters, have to smell everything. I mean everything. I dont know how his nose doesnt get tired. Plus this was all new smells. He was a rescue pup & spent the 1st 6 months of his life in a kennel so he is still very jumpy, even after 9 months with us. I did like the idea that with all of his activity in the bush edges there was little chance of slithers hangin out but on the other hand I was concerned they were in hiding & he might disturb them & get bitten. We did make it a short trip & when I got him back to the truck I discovered he had several ticks. Although he is on Frontline I didnt like him having bugs. I think I will wait til cold weather to take him out in the bush but I might take him on an urban run, both for company & socialization. I know he will be a distraction & thats ok, it goes with the decision to take him.
  15. If it is a multi or an off set cache its fine to do this but to do it just to 'make it more of a challenge' is IMO just an indicator the CO either isnt creative enough to make a challenging cache hide to begin with or & this is more likely, they are just an idiot.
  16. I would like to see people log their FTF ASAP. I am not a FTF hound but there have been 2 times that I can think of that I saw a new cache posted when I went on site (Im not a PM so I just see them when I look through the area maps & listings.) I decided to make the 30-45min trip to look for it, along with other caches in that area. When I got there the log on 1 was already signed. OK maybe the folks were still out caching. The other I couldnt find, only to find out that it wouldnt have mattered as it had already been found but it not only had the wrong coords, which the owner corrected several days later, the FTF person sent me an email after reading my log that they had found it several days ago but was waiting to log it in order of their other finds which were numerous since they had just been to a maga event & had some 100+ caches to log & that they had contacted the CO & explained that & it was ok. On that note I think if you are FTF then log it ASAP. Be considerate.
  17. I have a love/hate relationship with nanos. They drive me nuts but I do end up enjoying looking for them especially if they are a challenge. I have a few caches that the actual container with the log is a nano but it has been encapsulated in a larger container to disguise it. Such as the perch on a bird house or fake creature of nature in a tree or bush. With that thought I have a question. When I do the cache page what is the most appropriate choice for size? If it is put as a micro but is in a decoy container of say a mushroom is that deceptive & misleading? Would it be best to list it is unknown with no further explanation in the write up or with a mention that it is decoyed somehow & if it is done that way does it or doesnt it take away from the challenge of the hunt. Would it be exceptable to just put the dif level higher with a 'Not your typical micro or nano cache' note in the write up?
  18. I also read this book last fall. The owner made it a TB which was kinda cool as well. Something different & a fun read.
  19. The majority of cachers are responsible people & will make the decision to go or not to go regardless of the situation. Put a note in your log & let it bee (sorry about that LOL). Many folks dont look at the attributes or even read the logs so............. I found a cache that was at a small shop for wildlife stuff. The gal had a dozen birdhouses around, a bat house & all of the flowers were for butterflies, bees, birds & dragonflies. There were some logs (some of them nasty) about all of the bee's. Hello....you are at a location designed & landscape just for these creatures what did you expect. (not you personally but those that go, find the place engulfed with bees etc then complain). Put it in your log & press on. Enjoy.
  20. Just an FYI...you can download all the log sheets you want from http://geocacher-u.com/component/option,co...tpage/Itemid,1/ then click resources then downloads. you can then have some with you if you need them. It doent cost anything & its a good deed.
  21. It seems that some feathers have been ruffled here & the topic turned into a is it the parents fault or the teachers fault kids dont behave. Granted there are kids that do much better than others if out caching. WHY? Does it really matter for the sake of answering the initial question here which is.... Do any of you cache with groups? How does it work? No, it doesnt matter. Actually the questions didnt even specify children. It just said groups. Based on the story in the log prior to the question we, myself included, added our response based on children being in the group. So let me clarify my answer based on the actual question. I have cached with groups. Sometimes it's been good sometimes its not been so good. (also the reason I usually just cache with my partner). On an added note, I dont care to cache with children. It doesnt matter if they are well behaved or not. This is my time & I like it to be with other adults (who act enough like children). With that Im sure there is another thread somewhere to debate who is responsible for childrens behaviors or lack there of. This wasnt it.
  22. TY Moose. Sometimes I forget everyone doesnt think like me.
  23. My caching partner has 2 kids, 9 & 12 when we took them with us. It was a PITA. All they did was mope around & whine. (They wanted to come). So we tried it again but this time on some small trails. Even worse. Rule now is I DONT CACHE WITH KIDS! When the kids want to go they can go with heir mom & bond. Ill stay home. At events I will go out with a few other adults but wont cache with the kids. Just isnt enjoyable for me.
  24. There is a nature preserve I work at that the director wanted caches placed. She understood the 528' rule but said she had no objections if they were closer. They wanted caches there for the draw of people it would bring. I emailed my reviewer & was told they had to adhere to the guidelines. Well this is how I did it. Not the quickest way & it had to be done at home plus it also required at least a couple of visits. Finding the location I wanted. Checking with nearest cache, adjust. Then at home I took all of the numbers & put them into the following conversion charts 1. http://www.csgnetwork.com/gpscoordconv.html 2. http://www.movable-type.co.uk/scripts/latlong.html 3. http://www.worldwidemetric.com/measurements.html I then returned to site to either place the cache or to make the adjustment & try again. It worked as I only had 1 out of a dozen that had to be moved because it was only 515'.
  25. I love the creativity but I know, from experience, that many of the cachers that use other devices are either not going to see all of the info, art work etc may miss info needed or all the computor language is going to cause them grief using up to much whatever it uses up. (I'm not real pc savvy) I did some caches that had a lot of extra stuff as well as, what I thought, some cool fantasy tales.... Some loved it while others only saw it as a pain for whatever reason. Place the cache for the cachers. Give them the info they need to find it. All the other is for you. If you enjoy doing it so be it. Some will love it some wont. But thats what makes the world go round. Here is 1 of mine from my Realm of The Fae Series: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...11-8f68f402f853
