  1. Having not read the Burning Man forums from the past; I was under the impression that you could not place caches that would be recognized by GC.com within other events that are not open to the general public for free? Burningman is FAR from free. I think at this point there are only two relatively simple caches (not requiring off road vehicles) in the town of Gerlach and very few on the road between the north end of Pyramid Lake and Gerlach. I would personally place on one the way to or in Gerlach itself. Of course comes the subject, "Can you maintain it?"
  2. Here's a list of hotels within 10 miles.
  3. That'd be cool! I was planning on heading down there sometime in Sept. to scope out places to stay anyways. Here's the question, do you want to stay closer to Sac or closer to Marysville/Yuba City? Wheatland is kind of in the middle. M/Y will most likely be the cheaper route and it shouldn't be as crowded.
  4. Hard to believe that was 9 years ago! I don't know if they've really learned from it, I think they've just lucked out. We were actually at the Peppermill when it happened, they tear gassed us there too, which was completely unnecessary. The poor people in the car in front of us, as we were attempting to leave, dropped thier tranny right in the middle of the street. We were kind of stuck in the middle of it in an overheating '70 Mustang. Not one of our more fond HAN experiences. We usually go to the stuff during the week, we haven't been to any of the weekend cruises/events in probably 5-6 years. I heard on the news they were expecting between 500-700,000 people this next weekend. Crazy stuff!
  5. Always welcome for a cold beer. Never can tell what kind. This week I have a mix of Mexican beers - Tecate, Dos Equis Lager Especial, Dos Equis Amber and Del Sol. Is this a hint that I shop at Costco Did someone say beer? Mmmmmm......Beeeer! Yo quero Dos Equis! (yeah, my espanol sucketh!LOL) If you guys want to meet up to look at cars some night after work, let me know!
  6. I totally agree! I've found 5-6 different cemetery caches, one is in a very cool old cemetery with a lot of historical value. ie. The comstock lode.see here It's amazing to walk through this cemetery and look at all the headstones from the 1800's and yes people are still buried there today, but this one is done so your not really on or near anybodys plot. Then we've come across others such as this one. I liked the story behind it, but you kind of had to manuever some stuff around to find it, it kind of creeped me out even though it's more of a relecting bench than an actual grave, it still kind of creeped us. I think it's all about placement and the signifigance of the site.
  7. I'm not too sure on the camping facilities down there. We are planning on cruising down there in Octoberish to scope out the areas. (I will let you know what we find!) If they are campgrounds that are run by the Parks Dept of California. They do take reservations online, however they usually post them at 8am on Jan. 2. Since this is falling on a holiday weekend, I'd suggest you put in your reservation on Jan. 2nd! I had a friend this year get denied on a Tahoe site for 4th of July that she tried to get at around 10am on Jan. 2nd. I haven't been to Chico in about 13 years (my cousin went to college there, yeah, it was true to it's party reputation!) but it is a cool little town! Bike paths everywhere! I'd imagine there are some pretty dense caches there with all of the trails. I don't know if it's still there or not but there was this cool place called Madison Bear Garden, pub with pub grub type of place. One of the best burgers I've ever had. They had the best homemade pickles! Of course that was many years ago Sierra Nevada Pale Ale is also made in Chico. Not too sure if they do tours or not. I think they do now days. Back then it was still a very small brewery. If your headed north of Chico, Shasta is a very nice area to visit too!
  8. My number one benefit along with most others, is seeing things in my own backyard that I never knew were there! I've lived in the Reno-Tahoe area my entire life and I've seen more in this past year than I'd seen in the first 39! I've also met some awesome people! I've worked at the same place for 13 years and my little world didn't really expand outside of work until I started caching! It's been a huge eye opener to say the least! We also got to be on an episode of Xterra Planet, we are episode #4, they did about a 10 minute segment on geocaching that isn't too bad. Here's a link for the show, look for Xterra planet episode #4: http://www.xterraplanet.com/television/tv_schedule.cfm Edited for my mad spelling skills
  9. The hoards of people will start showing up this weekend. It usually starts really going about Weds. (8/8/07) Downtown Reno is horrible, you couldn't pay me to go down there! Especially after the tear gas incident of '98. Usually we go to Victorian Square in Sparks or the Peppermill or Atlantis to check out cars. All three places have plenty of stuff to do and see.
  10. Just a reminder!! If your going to be in town for HAN, stop by the event on the 11th!
  11. Yeah, L.A. NEEDS another talentless bimbo!
  12. Bahahaha! That's ok! Gralorn, I have sent you an email!
  13. Unfortunately I don't know much about the 300 but having a couple of Maggies, they pretty much operate the exact same way. I have a 210 and an XL, both can transfer. The 210 via the USB cable and the XL, just pop out the SD card, put it in the computer, takes about 2 seconds to download. You may want to look into GSAK, it has been an incredible tool IMO!
  14. YOUR THE BEST!!! Thanks so much! Gotta run at lunch to replace a log!
  15. My apologies if this has already been brought up, but I did run a search and couldn't find anything. A while back I found a template for logs (you know a sheet of paper with a breif description and a bunch of lines on it!), micro's in particular. Now I can't find that template and of course I forgot to save it to my desktop! Any body out there have a quick link to a template I can use?
  16. We did this event a while back, REI let the organizers teach a GPS class in the back room and even let them place a cache outside on the property. I think if your doing an introductory class or something to help people learn about GPSrs or geocaching, it is ok. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...fa-b157d389fdf3
  17. How is S.Reno different from any other part of town? But Hoofocker is a must! Little Big Ben is also a great multi!
  18. I know we are starting to repeat ourselves and this discussion has made me change my mind about this particular cache, back to the topic of "Sage One" This is a really good cache for this area, local terrain and environment dictate how things are hidden. Most of the terrain in northern nevada is sandy, rocky high desert controlled by the BLM. We don't have many big trees, just lots of sagebrush! (For those of you unfamiliar, it is our state weed, grows about 4 feet tall, EVERYWHERE) There are only so many painfully obvious rock piles, altoid tins hidden in a sage brush and historical markers one can find. The cache itself IS NOT BURIED, the surrounding structure has sand piled around it and it blends in brilliantly with the surroundings. You do not need to dig to get the cache. If you did have to dig, that means the wind blew sand over the top, it wasn't like that when we found it. If the BLM says it's ok, what is the problem?? I do find it disturbing that someone would drill a hole in a live tree
  19. After kind of doing a little research on the "guidlines" (and clarified to myself on what constitutes burying) if this was in fact dug out with hands, it should stay, heck 111 people found it before someone complained. Really, this hunk of BLM land is adjacent to a neighborhood and like RockDoc mentioned is FREQUENTED by ATV's and partying teens. With the rate of growth of this area it will soon be a neighborhood or strip mall anyways. If they (BLM) were worried about any environmental impact to this area, they would have posted no ATV signs a long time ago. I realize your going to have idiots out there that saw this cache and thought "cool" lets put one similar in a place that wasn't appropriate (where do you draw the line? ). C'mon people, it's mostly just common sense! For the most part if you have enough sense to operate a GPS, you should have enough sense to know the difference between what is right and what is wrong!
  20. This cache is over 300 miles north of Vegas.(We grow our states big out here, look at your GPS!)and BTW, there is lots of sand around Las Vegas. I have done the cache in question, yes, it is one of my more favorite caches. Yes, it is very sandy around the "box" in question and probably could've been dug up by hand. Unfortunately I would consider this to technically be "buried". In this particular case, I wouldn't say that any sort of environmental impact has been made or would have effect in the future, it's just a sagebrush. They grow everywhere here! Unfortunately the guidelines are there for a reason. Maybe if you obtained permission from the BLM they could be "ok" with it?? It will be sad to see this one go! The really sad part is that this land will probably be sold to the City by the BLM in the next ten years and a strip mall will be sitting there!
  21. Hi Guyute! With this heat I would head to Mt.Charleston, there is at least some shade up there. Check into Nevadageocaching.com, a lot of the Vegas cachers hang out over there. They'd be able to give you some good advise on where to go! I personally haven't cached too much of Las Vegas but there are some great urban ammo can caches towards the Henderson area and since your on your honeymoon, you must do "A Special Memory" the ammo can alone is worth seeing
  22. Oooh they came out great! I should be back to my work email on Monday!
  23. Any cachers out there coming to Reno for Hot August Nights? Just wanted to let everyone know that we are having an event at Rancho San Rafael on the 11th, of course this has nothing to do with the actual HAN event ! http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...40-c53b28c13710
