  1. i just hid my first micro last week... i know i know....micro? i have resisted the urge till now....ther are very few micros here in hawaii county...maybe 3 or 4 so it not a burden...yet...however this IS basically a drive up micro and quite accesable if you know where it is.....my reviewer approved it in record time with the caveat that i review the #1 terrain rating i gave it with wheelchair and crutches in mind...... on the side of caution i bumped it to 1.5....i dont think a determined person in a wheelchair will be deterred. itsonly had two finds in two weeks so that gives you an idea of what caching is like here.since the mojority of our 80 or so caches here require considerable effort over lava, in caves and difficult terrain, i thought an easy micro would be welcome.
  2. here's me with my sis "kauliamermaid" and my wife together on a local cache run in hawaii county......... and in costa rica
  3. i have inadvertantly balanced my post with finds.....45 posts 48 finds....... i would like to find many more as i really enjoy it but hawaii county only has 80 or so caches.... i have found a large portion of those...so i find myself posting about equal to my finds........ might be a good rule of thumb for those of us that dont have years of experience to share....
  4. speaking of stupid things people do...here in hawaii you can pay money to swim with lava.....check it out!!! this is really frowned upon around here...those gasses are very toxic and the shelf of lava caves in almost daily.......ps there are a few caches near here.
  5. Divulgate?????? gotta google that one but i know what you mean ... i think
  6. bubble burst.......what a mess.....anyway still very pleased......now wheres the swiffer
  7. Maybe this is a new record on cache publishing....10 minutes...... thats right 10 minutes after i submitted a new cache for consideration it was published.........thanks eric!!!!! you da man!!!!
  8. Hawaiian wintertime caching can still be warm and wet. near Captain Cooks Monumental Cache.
  9. here in hawaii if you transpose coordinates it usually will put you looking for something in the ocean..... the compass will point out to sea.....switch to map mode and you have a cache in the middle of all that blue wet stuff. after returning from asia last month i hand loaded a dozen new caches to look for on a day i was going to be out and about.....i had some problems on my first cache ... the arrow was pointing out to sea...so i figured that it was a transpose thing but every single cache was somewhere around the japan in the sea. that was just wrong turned out that my gps was still living in asia where E was set instead of W it must be a default thing or i simply wasnt paying attention.
  10. while the fact that the little blue halo IS the bug has become evident to some i think that we will find a large percentage travelling with an additional companion. since there are 20k of these out there i dont think the "owners" are going to keep track of how each and every one get sent off....solo blue halo or with someones thought out tribute or mission statement......after re reading the home page for these bugs aand if you know the nomenclature it is evident that these are bugs and not just dogtags. i think that since the bug is so small in comparison to the tag its quite an understatement in comparison to what most cahers see in the field and have become accustomed to. that being said i dont think it will hinder their missions. mine (or rather the one that was entrusted to me)is almost halfway to its goal of bixby OK. in this small town there are almost 700 caches, and its only been out there a week.
  11. maybe i missed something, because it wasnt very clear to me and a lot of others that i know....i was under the impression that the tag should be attached to something.....that the blue halo was just an icon to help set these apart. however after reading earthas post i see that i am wrong. maybe it should be more clear. i just released mine......i attached a small piece of wood that stated where it was going and were it was from...not really a bug but i think many others will do the same.......any way its on it way
  12. aloha...thanks so much for all your replies... i have been away for awhile and havent tackled this issue yet. i am sure that the batteries are still there........ all of your suggestions have been helpful..... hawaii is not quite in the 21st century....at least in the part where i live... i will do some checking and see where i can take these things....... most of them are cracked open..... they had to be tossed from a vist point off a 20 ft retaining wall to get where they lay. we have porous volcanic lava rock and i am sure all the toxins are leaching there way to the ocean only a few miles away..... paradise is only paradise for the tourists....live here awhile and you see this kinda thing all the time. i spend a lot of time in eco-friendly costa rica and if you travel as a tourist you get a warm fuzzy feeling about the environment there...spend a few weeks with locals and how they live you find out different......you always want to check out whats upstream before you swim and when the ocean is brown after a storm avoid the water.....any way i am leaning towards doing this little by little i dont think i can dispose of them any other way..... i need to get back up there and take some pics....when i do i will post em here for more ideas so you can see what i am up against..... i will check with walmart, napa and the dump to see what they say aloha and mahalo
  13. i would be happy to release coins on the big island in hawaii.....kona side.
  14. just returned from hong kong an china......found one in hong kong with a cahcer that livesthere that i met thru this site... that was really fun as he knew his way around that city.....it was on victoria peak and the views were awesome........i also found one in the forbidden city, tianenmen square and in the walled city of xian when we went to see the terracotta soldiers. we have a chinese friend that helps us in our business there when i explained geocaching to her and sent her a link to the chinese translated website i recieved a lukewarm response as she was apprehensive of lurking around public place with a gps, camera and misc papers in her newly tolerant but still paranoid country. she is now hooked...... i couldnt get her to calm down about it and everydays itinerary include a web hunt for caches..... i bought her a gps...she was amazed that it was made in china (taiwan) add another geofool to our ranks!!!
  15. recieved mine today its mission is to go to bixby oklahoma........any bixby-ites out there? here it comes!!
  16. just recieved my UFD travelbug.....requested on 12/20/06 and recieved 12/29/2006 in captain cook hawaii
  17. little known fact is that many cars are manufactured with recording device similar to a black box that insurance companies use to modify their actuarials using facts gathered from accidents these vehicles are involved in. this is done in cooperation with NTSB and many studies are done using these facts. they claim however that they dont use the info in regards to that accident and only when the cars are totalled and purchased back from you in a settlement. also many rental car companies use a gps that is installed in their cars to locate them in case of theft or late returns....read the fine print in the contract....it will usually state that if they have to activate the GPS to locate their car that they will charge you an extra fee....usually 500.00. also many fleet vehicles will have gps in their vehicles to monitor their drivers. while in costa rica last summer the news there stated that since many drivers pull over to siest in the afternoons or pay a visit to their lovers that by implementing gps tracking they could save money and eliminate this abuse of company assets.
  18. aloha from kona, while searching for a cache that was damaged by the oct 15th earthquake and trying to find a spot to relocate it i stumbled across dozens of car and truck batteries in a ravine below a scenic view point. i would like to place a cache there but dont want to lead cachers past such a horrendous sight as it not representative of the hawaii i know...... my question is what should i do with them? i am willing to get a few other cachers together to haul em out ( a big chore) but once out what should i do with them? the landfill wont takem there is also a lot of tires scattered about.... the landfill wont take them either!!!! any ideas? thanks.
  19. i think mark twain replied when queried on how he would celebrate his 75th birthday that he would plant two oak trees and buy a hammock......ever the optimist he didnt live to see his 75th.

  21. as a relatively new cacher i have spent some spare time browsing the forums just trying to see how and where i fit in with my peers......when i find an interesting topic i am always glad to see some posts by the prolific ones....... even though they are of varied backgrounds and styles they always seem to bring something valuable to the conversation....be it knowledge...insight...humor...sarcasm and pithy comments on the state of geocaching as it pertains to their experience and outlook on the topic....so i guess you can say they carry weight with me but i dont take any of it too serious as it is just a game or sport that only diverts us from the rest of our lives for a llittle bit
  22. i just had GCZCDE published today for a cache in hawaii
