  1. On the Cache Details page, there is a link . . .

...all nearby hiking trails from Trails.com

Does anybody have experience with this site? :)

    http://www.trails.com

Whenever I search for trails around my area it always comes up with Trails.com. All the trails that they listed for my area came from the same book, so I just bought the book instead of subscribing to the service. It looks like it could be a great resource for others, however.

  2. I don't see anything wrong with an informational cache series. In my area, we have a series called The Word. The cache description is just basic cache information. But if you need a hint, you have to look up Bible verses. The series seems well received. I haven't heard anything negative said about it.

I'm sure you wouldn't, but imagine if someone did a series where you had to look up things in the Koran or Mein Kampf or, heaven forbid, a book written by Michael Moore? Chances are people would complain. Ironically, it would be those who seem to love to make fun of how "PC" the liberals claim to be.

I personally wouldn't have a problem with that. They can be used as a resource just like the Bible. It's an individual choice to continue on with the cache. Whether or not you're right-wing or left-wing, I don't believe that it's right to pressure others to conform to your views, whether it be through active conversion or not allowing others to act on their views.

    Live and let live.

  3. I use OpenOffice and am able to open the | delimited files. It allows an option for the user to input the "delimiter".

The style file is exactly what we need in order to do this efficiently. Perhaps this weekend I'll try my luck with it, or we'll be lucky and somebody on the listserv will respond.

I'm personally only interested in Summits and Locales, but I'm sure if we had the POI's for an entire state it would be easy enough to filter out the items we don't want.

I found that other site and the way to download those wierd delimmitted files. I tried everything I could to convert them into something I could use. I tried replaacing the l with a comma and could open it in Quattro Pro and Excel, but I could not figure out a way to get it into something I could use. I also tried gpsbable and was not able to figure it out. It looks like it could do it. It looks like you need to make a style file and I tried figuring it out and was completely comfused. I joined thier gpsbable listserve and asked for help. No one has responded yet. I will let others know if they do. Or it would be great if someone here could figure it out.

If we can figure out how to convert the files properly, it would not be too difficult to create a state map with all the POIs in it. I would suggest once we get it figured out we post how to do it and let people take on different states and then we can post the finished maps somewhere. I did a map for the county I live in and it works perfectly and was only 20K. So I bet you could have a state POI map under 500K.

  4. ProsperoDK,

I was just actually looking at my options since my last post to maybe figure something out. It looks like GPSBabel allows custom CSV files if you know how to make it realize what field does what.

However, you brought up a good point. I could also manipulate the CSV file the GNIS provides to something that GPSBabel already recognizes.

BTW, I find it a bit disturbing that I've created detailed topographical maps for a GPS unit I don't have and for a hobby I still haven't participated in. :(:(

I just tried searching and downloading on that site. With a good text editor you could quickly do a search replace in the file for the '|' to change it to a ',' or a ';'.

And then you could open it in Excel and weed out the columns you don't need and massage the longitude latitude to get it in a format more readily readable.

  5. Like you, I asked myself the same thing. It was very time consuming -- I did pretty much the same thing you did. Wayhoo gets their information from the GNIS -- this information, along with a much better search engine that displays more results, can be found here. However, the only method the GNIS allows that information to be exported is through a pipe (|) delimited text file. I haven't been able to find a way to use the data in that format, nor have I been successful in converting that into a useable format.

If you find a better way to export this data, please let me know!

    Thanks,

    Brett

Thanks that is exactly what I was looking for.

It, however, seems very hard to access what I need. The main problem is I was only able to select 20 points at a time when there could be a hundred or more. That took forever. Is there some easier way to access the data? For example, could you get a file of all the airports for a state?

I was able to make a really neat map for my county that works great. It took forever and I would hope there is an easier way to do it. Here is what I did:

I browsed to the county. Then I would select the categories and save all the waypoints (like all the airports) and then save it as a gpx. Then I would clear my waypoints and go onto the next category. I then ended up with a GPX file for each category.

I then opened each file up in GPSMapediter, selected all the points, then right clicked on them and converted them to proper point. Then I would save the file. Then I would open the next gpx file, convert it and save it. Then I created a new file and added all the files I created and then I saved it and created an img file.

It worked perfectly, but it took forever. I would like to find an easier way. If I could easily get a file for each catergory it would not be that hard.

Any suggestions? Or has someone already made the maps for the entire country?

    Thanks

I've found the elevation and water data, but is there any place where you can get data like springs, mountian names, and other points that are normally on a topo map?

Check out Wayhoo, it creates a GPX file out of the waypoints you create (From the GNIS). From there you can import them into your map or use the POI Loader.

  6. For me, it would be a relieve to find an adult cache. I am a bit fed up with the forced “you have to educate our children” regulations. To me, it is strange everyone has to obey the regulations set by some parents.

Sometimes I feel I have to filter my log as well in the logbook as on the cache page, to make it suitable for children. I am a big boy, do not patronize me. I like life in all its niches, live and let live, I will not be offended easily.

For example: I would not mind to find: Bottle-openers; Sci-fi books; CD’s from Mozart/the Carpenters; Calculators; Telephone cards; Cocktail recipes; Foreign coins like £¥$; Hammers; Bibles; Bow ties; Unworn panty hoses or Caviar cans.

Neither would it bother me to find a cache in a supposed to be non-child friendly areas like, Hanging under a bridge; In a red light district; Next to a highway; On a nudist beach; In a cruising zone; as long as it is stated in the description of the cache page.

When parents find it appropriate to cache with their children, then it is their decision. In the real world, only restricted areas are child frendly, the rest is not. They must be aware of that.

I see geocaching as an adult game.

    Zilvervloot.

You make some good points, thanks for your contribution to this thread.

  7. I'm thinking the whole time "are bees the insects that can only sting you once?"

Depends what type of bee. Honeybees have barbs in their stinger -- their stinger embeds into your skin and is then removed from their body along with the venom sac.

Bumblebees, for example, have smooth stingers, they are able to sting multiple times because it stays attached to their body.

  8. Well, I was going to say that if you kept the series strictly informational, it might be publishable. But what is informational to one person, may be considered sacrilege to another. I'd look elsewhere for your series.

Educational material on different cultures is apparently offensive to everybody. I've noticed that with a lot of other things -- don't want to offend somebody! I think I'm going to just lock myself up in my house to prevent myself from hurting somebody's feelings.

I'm QUITE offended that you make light of my severe Agoraphobia. Has anyone notified LE yet?

Haha, thanks for the laugh. :anicute:

  10.

And not to put a rain on the parade, but wouldn't that be called a commercial cache, since it encourages cachers to actually buy something that supports a certain organization?

The lotto tickets here support local schools, not much different than a sales tax you most likely already pay for your other swag.

  11. Not sure if you get a 128 or 256 with a 60CSx, my 60Cx came with 64mb card

1gig max for now, it's a micro sd card, do not buy an ultra II.

1 gig will hold almost half of the CN7 or 8 USA maps.

Wats wrong with an uktra II card? Just wondering.

There have been reports that they don't work with the 60CSx.

  12. Having been around firearms for most of my life, I have no problem using them as a tool just as I use my GPS unit to get me to a geocache. I carry either a 9mm Keltec P11 subcompact handgun or a Sig Sauer P229 .40 S&W whether I am geocaching, hiking, or at the local mall.

As others have already noted, I've been more concerned about mammals of the two-legged variety than anything else I've met on the trail. Whether or not you decide to carry, being situationally aware of your surroundings will likely be the largest factor in your safety.

  13. This may have been discussed, but I've been unable to find the thread. I've waited for the latest version of City Select North America to be released, which apparently has happened. However, the medium is DVD, and there is no DVD drive on my geocaching computer. Am I stuck with buying an external drive in order to use the new software? I've called Garmin, but have been unable to tolerate the long hold time. I hate it when my electronics turn into doorstops!

Either that or replace your current internal CD-ROM drive with a DVD-ROM drive; or if you have enough internal drive slots, just add the DVD-Rom to your current configuration. You can buy internal DVD drives for ~$40.00 from Newegg.
