  1. I'm on my Commodore 64 right now, I'm still waiting for computers to stop getting better so I can buy one that isn't obsolete before I even buy one. ;-)
  2. I have that different for each set. I just got done uploading all 33 of my maps to http://mapcenter.cgpsmapper.com I hope others start sharing too! I just might do that... Think it'll accept a 1.7gig MP file? I have the entire Pacific Inland Northwest in there.
  3. Whenever I search for trails around my area it always comes up with Trails.com. All the trails that they listed for my area came from the same book, so I just bought the book instead of subscribing to the service. It looks like it could be a great resource for others, however.
  4. I'm sure you wouldn't, but imagine if someone did a series where you had to look up things in the Koran or Mein Kampf or, heaven forbid, a book written by Michael Moore? Chances are people would complain. Ironically, it would be those who seem to love to make fun of how "PC" the liberals claim to be. I personally wouldn't have a problem with that. They can be used as a resource just like the Bible. It's an individual choice to continue on with the cache. Whether or not you're right-wing or left-wing, I don't believe that it's right to pressure others to conform to your views, whether it be through active conversion or not allowing others to act on their views. Live and let live.
  5. I use OpenOffice and am able to open the | delimited files. It allows an option for the user to input the "delimiter". The style file is exactly what we need in order to do this efficiently. Perhaps this weekend I'll try my luck with it, or we'll be lucky and somebody on the listserv will respond. I'm personally only interested in Summits and Locales, but I'm sure if we had the POI's for an entire state it would be easy enough to filter out the items we don't want.
  6. ProsperoDK, I was just actually looking at my options since my last post to maybe figure something out. It looks like GPSBabel allows custom CSV files if you know how to make it realize what field does what. However, you brought up a good point. I could also manipulate the CSV file the GNIS provides to something that GPSBabel already recognizes. BTW, I find it a bit disturbing that I've created detailed topographical maps for a GPS unit I don't have and for a hobby I still haven't participated in. -Brett
  7. Like you, I asked myself the same thing. It was very time consuming -- I did pretty much the same thing you did. Wayhoo gets their information from the GNIS -- this information, along with a much better search engine that displays more results, can be found here. However, the only method the GNIS allows that information to be exported is through a pipe (|) delimited text file. I haven't been able to find a way to use the data in that format, nor have I been successful in converting that into a useable format. If you find a better way to export this data, please let me know! Thanks, Brett Check out Wayhoo, it creates a GPX file out of the waypoints you create (From the GNIS). From there you can import them into your map or use the POI Loader.
  8. I wouldn't be surprised if the lack of replies is due in large part because they don't want to be scorned by others on here.

  10. You make some good points, thanks for your contribution to this thread.
  11. Depends what type of bee. Honeybees have barbs in their stinger -- their stinger embeds into your skin and is then removed from their body along with the venom sac. Bumblebees, for example, have smooth stingers, they are able to sting multiple times because it stays attached to their body.
  12. Why don't you map the network drive so it appears as a local drive on your computer? Mapsource should be able to see it then.
  13. Educational material on different cultures is apparently offensive to everybody. I've noticed that with a lot of other things -- don't want to offend somebody! I think I'm going to just lock myself up in my house to prevent myself from hurting somebody's feelings. I'm QUITE offended that you make light of my severe Agoraphobia. Has anyone notified LE yet? Haha, thanks for the laugh.

  15. The lotto tickets here support local schools, not much different than a sales tax you most likely already pay for your other swag.
  16. Wats wrong with an uktra II card? Just wondering. There have been reports that they don't work with the 60CSx.
  17. Wow, a great deal there. That's about as close to cost as I've seen.
  18. That's actually what I was thinking.
  19. Having been around firearms for most of my life, I have no problem using them as a tool just as I use my GPS unit to get me to a geocache. I carry either a 9mm Keltec P11 subcompact handgun or a Sig Sauer P229 .40 S&W whether I am geocaching, hiking, or at the local mall. As others have already noted, I've been more concerned about mammals of the two-legged variety than anything else I've met on the trail. Whether or not you decide to carry, being situationally aware of your surroundings will likely be the largest factor in your safety. -Brett
  20. Asolo Fugitive GTX Socks are just as important. I love Smartwool.
  21. I ordered a GPSMap 60CSx and City Navigator North America Version 8 directly from Garmin today -- they told me that they would be shipping my order next week as they didn't have everything in stock, which I'm guessing the cause of the delay to be City Navigator although I'm not 100%. Just a headsup.
  22. Either that or replace your current internal CD-ROM drive with a DVD-ROM drive; or if you have enough internal drive slots, just add the DVD-Rom to your current configuration. You can buy internal DVD drives for ~$40.00 from Newegg.
