  1. Others have covered things pretty well, but being a fellow Colorado owner, here are a few tips... Make sure you have fresh batts (I noticed the other day when my batts got low, it started acting a tad jumpy) Calibrate the Compass (When was the last time you did this? I do it almost every time I change Batts or if it seems off) Keep moving (keep moving in circles and criss cross patterns to find your Ground Zero, Mark it, now imagine that as the center of a 30' circle) I really like my Colorado and don't know of another unit, I'd rather have...
  2. Pretty much the same here... I love being outdoors, love parks and woods, getting in a good walk... For me, its all about exploring and the thrill of ""The Find"... For alot of folks its about getting or trading the swag, but I pretty much never take anything (swag wise) while I do try to leave stuff... I do like to pick up and drop of trackables and see how far and where they go... Mostly, I cache by myself as my wife can't won't get off the couch and away from the TV, my daughter won't get off Facebook and most of my friends think its kinda cool, but don't want to give up their spare time caching.... So, I plan a route or bunch and off I go...
  3. Some pretty good advice here... I seem to be getting a tad better as time goes on... After you have found a few you start to develop a sense for it and what to look for.. The way I do it, is by finding what I call Ground Zero, (Smallest distance I can get the GPSr to read, usually between 2-12') I circle then criss cross the area, Mark my G.Z. and envision about a 30-50, usually 30' circle around that point and search... Search under any Rocks, leaves, logs, sticks, debris, Holes, Hollows, etc.. Read the caches description close and many times... Unless they have done a really really good job with Camouflaging it, I try to look for the smallest detail that doesn't belong... Also, you may need a few tools... A stick for poking in holes and areas that you are not comfortable sticking your hand and tweezers for pulling out really small logs... Of course there are many other useful things, but those will get you started. Just stick with it... I love the days when I find 5 out of 5 ( I don't normally have the time to log like 20+ a day like some of these pros) and I get a bit discourage when I find 0/1 out of 5, but I go back and keep trying... There is a local park by me thats pretty big, has two or three lakes and tons of woods... It had like caches and a few others really close, took me 3 trips to log all of them as "Found", but after wards it felt good... I see someone added a new one this month, I'll be going back for it ASAP... Good Luck too ya and keep hanging out in the forums and you'll soon be a regular and giving advice to other new folks...
  4. I purchased a Window cling TB for my 2006 TrailBlazer (on an impluse) from REI thinking it was sticker... I got it home activated it then went to put it on and found out it was a Window Cling, not a Sticker.... Unfortunately, my windows are tinted Way too Dark to see the cling when its on the inside... FAIL, on my part... It clearly say on the tag that its a Window Cling... I should have read better... Sigh...
  5. Welcome to the site and the Hobby/Sport of Geocaching... With a post like that, well Never mind... I'll just say, it takes a bit to learn your way around, but its not that bad and the fun is Great!!! While the site may not cater to you and do everything you want at a push of a button with no thinking or effort on your part, if you are having a problem and you post a specific question, I'm positive that someone (most likely several folks) here will be glad to help you... I consider myself to be low man on the totem pole as far as # of finds, skills with this site and Geocaching itself, but with help from these fine folks, I've managed to find 30+ caches and had tons of fun doing it... You just have to be willing to put a little effort into it...
  6. Welcome to the site and sport of Geocaching Tadpole... This can quickly become a very addictive hobby... Like Eraseek said, use the map tool and look for the Geocache then you can log it... If you have any further questions or need any type of help, just let us know... Do you have a GPSr yet??? While it is possible to find caches without one, you'll have much better success with one...
  7. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year too all!!!!
  8. View New content - Top right under the search bar next to the RSS icon Mark Board As Read - All the way at the bottom, middle of the page Thats it, Thank you.. Not sure how I missed it, but I did... Thanks again...
  9. Wow, I didn't even notice the date... My bad, should've been paying more attention. Everyone gets to be a dunce one and a while Sadly, I do it more often than most...
  10. I don't think so.... I once picked up a Travel Bug while out of town on vacation, brought it home, got back to work and forgot about it... About a month or so later, the owner sent me a nice note asking if I still had it and if so, if I could move it along or send it back, they'd pay for return postage... I was kinda embarrassed as I had dropped the ball, but I got it back out that next weekend...
  11. Testing out to see how the quoter works... Eh, unless I'm missing something it seems to work OK... Still getting used to this new setup... I'm looking for a button somewhere for ""New Posts" and ""Mark All Posts as Read"...
  12. About a 1/4 mile or more back into the woods I found and old Car, one that I have no ideas what it was or what year its from... Or how it got there... Here are a few pics....
  13. Please stop using the term "puritans" to refer to those who believe the cache log should be signed in order to log a find. The term is insulting, offensive, and violates the forum guidelines. Thanks. Now. As for FTFs. The site explicitly acknowledges that there is such a thing as a "find," even though it does not define it to everyone's satisfaction. The same is not true for the term FTF. I hope that the term is never used in any official Geocaching.com page anywhere. 1st, I think people get offended way to easy these days... With that said, maybe I don't know what I'm talkin about... What is insulting and offensive about ''Puritans""??? I'm still new at some of the talk or lingo in this hobby... Is it because of the Puritans of the 16th century business??? Only thing I could think of... More importantly, why would one not want to sign a log? To me it shows proof that one actually did find it in person, and did not do a Keyboard commando finding.... One could log finds all day like that if so inclined... What is this High School? Anyone can be offended at anything they want, but merely asking a few question to learn about this great hobby and people are lining to to watch a fight... (Putting in a smiley so folks know my tone is in a lighthearted joking manner) I didn't say anything that I would think was inflammatory.... But I maybe thats just me and others see it differently...

  15. Happy to report no issues, speed or otherwise today.... We all complain when somethings not right, figured I ought to speak up when it is working right...
  16. I fully understand what they're up against... I work in a simmilar enviorment, where during outtages such as this (or worse) I/we would get pulled off working on it every half hour to explan to some high up mucky muck and then each time he would spend 10 minutes ore more re-inforcing how important it was to get the issue resolved ASAP.. Finally having enough, I said, ""With all due respect, if its so Important, then let us keep working on it, vs sitting on this call evey 30 muinutes and then you telling us how important it is for 10 minutes... As it stands, for every 30 minutes of troubleshooting, we have 20 minutes of no troubleshooting. How about we appoint one person as the ""Updater"" and you let the rest of the crew work on it and we do updates every 2 hours. So, maybe we'll have time enought to get something done to update everyone on..." I kept my job and it seems to be working...
  17. DOH, I see it and sometime I can not beleive my own stupidity...... Also, I misread/understood, I though you guys were meaning the little cache itself box was grey, not the thing around it... Either way, its a foreheadslap.... Thanks You, both for the help.
  18. Eh, not on this one... Unless I'm doing something wrong.... Good or not for me, they all show up as Sorry about not being more specific, I did not know about more than one map.. So when I go to the main goecaching.com page, click on the link to the right for finding or hiding or put a zip code in the little box on the right and it will take you to a page that lists all the caches nearest to the spot you put in... http://www.geocaching.com/seek/nearest.asp...045&dist=25 Then you click on, "Search for geocaches with Google Maps". and it loads a google maps view. (taking forever right now) http://www.geocaching.com/map/default.aspx...mp;lng=-90.3833 Then click on the cache http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...62-5041c9811500 OK, Well, I do see where when you click on the cache's Icon, it pops up a smallish 2x4" Bubble, in that is shows up with the Red line through it, but not when you are looking at Map view...
  19. I was wondering if there was a way to get the site to show caches on the Map as unavailable when they are as such??? I have clicked on several Cache Icons, then the caches page loads and I get, ""This cache is temporarily unavailable. Read the logs below to read the status for this cache."" Theres a few by my house and my office like this and it gets annoying when you on the hunt for your next cache to look for... Not a huge deal, just curious of someone knew of an option I could enable that I did not know of, or if this is something that could be implemented to the site... Thanks, the site as it is seems pretty user friendly, but there always something new to learn...
  20. Sometimes I get to the Google map, but all I get is ""Requesting Caches".... I missed it, what exactly did they do last night to the "Infrastructure"?
  21. I think amost no matter what you call it someone is going to cry they don't like it... You can't please everyone... I've never been 1st or 10th to find a cache and I'm no where near offened or put off by this.... I might have asked this before, any newstands or stores gettng this mag? I'd like to pick up a copy and help support it, but I'm trying not to use C.C. or P.P. anymore....
  22. DO Not let a single semingly unstable jerk ruin this or anything else you enjoy.... Next you could run into a jerk like this at the Mall or Grocery Store, will you stop going there... I think you all did the right thing by calling the Police... I'd maybe post a note on the cachelogs to warn other Geocachers about this guy... It woulda been nice to snap a pic of him, for the site and the police... Again, unless you cache in a really bad area or just looking for a reason to hang it up, I'd cool down for a fewdays and re-think it... Explain to your kid, that some people are just bad and need to be avoided...
  23. I still consider myself a casual newbie to caching... Hope to get alot more done this spring/summer... I use the geocaching Map tool and pick an area I want to focus on... Say a Park nearby someone where we are visiting/camping, area around a hotel we are staying at, area around a family members' we are visiting, etc... I focus in on that area and look at all the caches I might be intersted in, I then print out a map view that has them all on there and I circle the ones I want to hit... Then I print out each caches info, maybe write a few of my own notes on the paper, then put the papers in order that I think I/we will be able to do them in, then I push the cords/cache info into my Colorado and pack up.... I try to keep it simple on what I pack too, but it really adds up quick... Stuff printed out mentioned above GPS, Backup GPS, 1-2 flashlights and maybe a few glowsticks Extra batts for GPS and Lights Handy Knife Cell Phone Water (bottles if quick short hits, long hikes, I take the Camelbacks) Cliff bars small 1st aid kit Digital Cam Travel Bugs/Cache Swag Trash bags Roll of Parashoot Cord Waterproof Matches maybe a fuelbar for firestarter Toilet Paper few wetnaps Travel size Sunscreen
  24. I've been watching the web, newstands, book stores and everywhere else for a magzine on Geocaching for ever now... I can't wait to see a copy and check it out... Will this be avalible at any major newstands/book stores, any retail locations or just Subscription only? Going down the row at Borders or Barnes and Noble looking at all the other goofy magazine titles, I can not beleive that there is not already a successful Geocaching magazine... I mean, kniting, UFOs, withccraft, basket making, russion nesting dolls, etc..etc... I could come up with 20 or so more... If theres a market for those..... Again can't wait to check one out!!! Good luck!
  25. Just wanted to take a few seconds and say thanks to those that put the time in efforts in this place, to fix it and keep it running... Several of us were B!tching and moaning like crazy... So, now that things have been running good for some time... Thanks again for all you do!!!
