  1. I have seen some caches not load to my PN-20 in Safari but they will load in Firefox (OS X 10.6.1), even after reinstalling the plugin. I think there are still some caches that I can't load at all, like GC21ATA. I haven't tried with Windows (under VirtualBox) yet, though I bet it's more likely the data than the operating system. :7(
  2. I have seen some caches not load for me in Safari but they will load in Firefox (OS X 10.6.1), even after reinstalling the plugin. I think there are still some caches that I can't load, like GC21ATA.
  3. Man, if I ever get a geocoin made, I think I'll put "DON'T RAVAGE THE SWAG" on it. :7) - Will
  4. Looks like their domain was locked when it expired. :7( Yep, looks like it expired 25-Nov-09: http://whois.domaintools.com/maccaching.com
  5. VirtualBox is an alternative to Parallels which is free. I use it on a MacBook Pro with a copy of WIndows XP Pro in order to run Topo 8 for me DeLorme PN-20. It takes a minute of fiddling to get the USB working, but that's par for the course with Windows. Now if there was a way to run this on Solaris I would be excited. :7)
  6. What about attaching a flat plate (plywood?), say 1'x1' or 2'x'2', to the bottom of the post and smearing it with glue, then scattering sand on it? You could put *that* flat on the ground and drop a few handfuls of dirt on its edges. No burying, no foul.
  7. "Out of sight on larger metal things" is the short answer. The long answer includes: the recessed bottom of a railing; next to a line of bolt heads on a vertical post/pipe; up inside the post of a stop sign; the back of a big plaque/sign that's close to a building; the inside or underside of a loose steel fencepost cap; nearly anywhere on a detail-rich, metal stationary object (like a cannon set up as a military memorial, or the pistol-studded concrete column in Providence that I wanted to use but which is too close to existing caches); etc., etc. But those are mostly urban-type hides; where one might hide a magnetic nano out of downtown I can't even imagine. Anyway, remember, "out of sight, out of mind": if you can't see it from an ordinary point of view, then it's probably an OK spot. And if it's sheltered from the weather, then it's probably a good spot. - Will P.S. In many parts of the country, hiders have to bear in mind where snow & salt will be shoveled (and possibly knock loose a nano or corrode it).
  8. That's a "cryovac" machine: it's for vacuum-sealing food for freezing (or slow-cooking). And I never thought of that -- what a great idea for water-ptoofing papers and maps!
  9. I picked up some large acorns this year with the same plan. I gave up. A friend makes jewelry from acorns, and she suggested boiling it first to kill off any "passengers" insides. (Ew!) I bored out one of the acorns I brought home, and there's scarcely room for a blinkie (nano) under the cap. Then how do you attach the cap? And where do you hide it that it doesn't stick out like a sore thumb, or blow away, or get eaten, or or or? Nah, I gave up the idea. I might use it as the template for a big container made of Good Stuff expanding foam, but not on its own.
  10. Go to the regional forum appropriate to your location and either look for relevant threads or ask. Rochdale, isn't that the U.K.? try here: http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showforum=35 (I had a similar question recently and made a new post in "my" regional forum. I got several useful replies in short order.)
  11. Consider enabling the "no wheelchairs" attribute icon so that the fairly low terrain number doesn't mislead anyone. (That's what I did for a cache on a paved lot that had just three stairs at the very end: T=1.5 and the "no chairs" icon.) You might also mention it in the description
  12. Can't you hang another birdhouse nearby? Consider the possibility of a cacher sticking their nose into an occupied-but-not-the-real-cache birdhouse part of the fun: convert it to a multi or puzzle cache! - Will
  13. I will try: thank you to Ariel in Providence, RI, who has been patient with me, answering questions and making constructive suggestions. She also works to maintain her caches, and has hidden a nice series of them downtown that were a great way for me and an officemate to get good exercise this past summer. Very classy! - Will
  14. I was trying a few different glues this weekend to rig up plastic containers with some magnets harvested from old hard drives. Nothing worked! But luckily, a few of the magnets were bended to metal straps when the drive was assembled, so I was able to bolt the metal strap through the side of the plastic container and then seal around the holes. Those magnets from Lee Valley hardware with the hole in the middle are looking like a good addition to my Christmas List for some wintertime tinkering...
  15. Where is the database? I have looked and looked and not found it -- though I admit I didn't register at the Forum, since I was put off by the ads for GETTING RIPPED WITHOUT 'ROIDS on the registration page. Hardly seems Scout-like...:7( Thanks! - Will P.S. I sent email to our council and have heard not a thing in reply. Uh-oh...
  16. I just got my two Horseshoe Crabs in the mail today -- they're wonderful. Now to make a new cache to (temporarily) hold them...
  17. I can't help you, but the "GPS and Technology forum might be a good place to ask: http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showforum=11 Or the "Getting Started" forum might have someone who can help: http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showforum=5
  18. I just saw this thread, and I love the Kells art. I really would like to own one of these. There's a Celtic Peacock on the "presales" page right now which is also very striking, but nothing like your designs! - Will
  19. They did? But there was already a .jif image file format name (actually corresponding to .JPEG or .JPG) back then, too -- I remember it from my Gopher-using days in like 1993! *sigh*
  20. I took a few small aerials and satellite images to figure out which I liked, and then grabbed a bunch more for the areas where I spend the most time (downtown, along my commute, near the house, etc.). Do you know about DeLorme's forums? http://forum.delorme.com/ Some staffers and a few very friendly users are there. Most often they either tell you how to do something, or they throw you at the universally-applicable wiki. :7)
  21. Those are awesome! Do you know if that site takes PayPal? (I can't find a yes or no anywhere.)
  22. Pfft, Cheese Heads: they're just mad Farverevre is playing again but not in Wisconsin. Signed, a Minnesotan. :7) P.S. Honestly, punctuation? Lots of caches have punctuation in the names, and any data export/import should wrap such a string in double quotes. Ignore 'em.
  23. I agree with the above sentiments, and have upped my Difficulty to 1.5. Thanks for your input, everyone.
