  1. Turn it into a new cache and that way someone will find it. The party idea sounds cool!
  2. That's correct, I *have* calculated the co-ordinates. I'll get out there again, but an island adventure costs money.
  3. When's someone going to try to solve Perpetual Dawn? It's been out there for over a month now.
  4. I think it depends on where and how far you are going to find a cache. For example I went to Vancouver Island on Thursday for the entire day so spent money around there (on gas, food, etc). If I was caching here like I usually do then I drive to the spot, find it, come back home again, usually without spending any money. So I think it depends entirely on the type of cache you are going for.
  5. How exactly did you loose the GPSr?
  6. -MrG wrote-------------------- They have left a trail. I am sure I am not the only one that has seen it, but perhaps to only one to recognize it. Having found several and being a first finder once, helped, but that is not where the trail starts or ends. I hope to confirm within a day or so and may at least get the satisfaction of knowing I solved the biggest Team KFWB GPS puzzle cache of them all. ------------------------------ What do you mean? Care explaining to those of us who haven't seen it? RobertM
  7. Does your Legend go off if you do the following? Hold it upside down, i.e on its head. Now tap the the bottom part up with your finger(s), ie. tapping the top of the GPS which is at the bottom, like giving it a knock. Does it switch off? I had a Legend which did this and returned it. I got a new one and it did not do the same thing but is now starting to as well. It really irritates me! It even does it if I hold the batteries firmly in place, so it's not the batteries which get disconnected when tapping. I reckon the Legends have an internal problem. Strange that both my units do this! Robert

    Mist

    I'm using a Garmin Legend.

    Mist

Okay, so if rain/mist doesn't affect the incoming signals then perhaps it was the moisture on the GPSr unit? I noticed quite a bit of moisture on my camera and on my clothing. Could the moisture on the GPSr be the cause? Isn't this a bit silly though? Rain/mist doesn't affect the signal but get a film of water between the GPSr and the signal does. So the answer is yes and no? Rob

    Mist

Hi, Some interesting info and different points of views. Even in the open while driving to the mountain I had a problem picking up signals. Normally while driving I can pick quite a couple but on the misty/rainy day I picked up sometimes 1 and 4 in the open. So in my opinion the only factor here was the rain/mist. Windshield wipers weren't in use either. :-) Then under the cover a few days before I could pick up 3 to 4 signals through the openings in the tree cover. In the rain/mist I could only pick up 1 signal, sometimes 2, but not more. So under the cover I normally pick up less signals and under rain/mist with less signals "coming through" I'd obviously pick up less signals under the cover, which makes sense. The wet leaves thing therefore is questionable, right? It's what's above the trees, i.e. rain/mist, that's affecting the signal cause even in the open I picked up less signals. Rob

    Mist

Hi, I'm quite certain that mist and rain doesn't effect the reception of satellite TV too much, but does it effect GPSr reception? The reason I ask is that yesterday I went find a cache I couldn't find on the first attempt a fe days earlier but this time I could get no signal on the mountain (Mt Seymour in North Vancouver). On my previous visit I got reception under the trees, but with the heavy mist under rather thick tree cover I could only get max 2 birds which didn't help. Anyone know more about this? Does mist/rain effect GPSr reception a lot? Thanks Rob
  12. Hi, Thanks for the info on the caches. I've downloaded all points and plotted them in MapSource already and some are fairly close to where I'll be but my main concern was the difficulty of them the way I'd be dressed. I'll take a look again at the caches you've pointed out and see if any would be possible or if I should not attempt any at all. I'll definitely take my GPS with to Edmonton though as I've downloaded the enhanced basemaps of Edmonton onto my Legend so most of the roads are displayed, but not all. Pity there's not more detailed maps like there are for Vancouver. :-( Rob
  13. Hi, Thanks for all the info. It would seem nothing is available for Edmonton except the enhanced basemaps which only really have main routes and not ALL the streets. Yip, I somehow always run the software with the CD in. I actually forgot the CD in after installing the software and discovered it didn't work that well when I had some other CD in the drive. I'll try copying the contents to the HD as that'll free up the CD drive. I have a normal read and RW drive but the CD can't hog a drive continuously. Robert
  14. Hi, I have the Garmin Canada software but the only maps for Edmonton are the enhanced base maps and no roads and recreation maps. Is there perhaps a newer version out that includes the R&R maps for this area? I live in Vancouver and the maps available for this area are really great. Rob
  15. Hi, I'll be in Edmonton for business on Monday (Sep 16) and would like to cache a bit while I'm there but will be dressed in a suit and tie so they have to be easy to access in terms of getting there as well as it shouldn't require kilometres of bush-wacking. Anything like that available near the airport or in close vicinity to the West Edmonton Mall? Thanks Rob
  16. Thanks for the info. I was in contact with a guy from an e-store and he gave me some great info too. I've now ordered the Legend and it should be here pretty soon. The Vista was a thought but it's just too much of a price jump. Rob

  18. A guy was attacked on Vancouver Island by a Cougar a few weeks ago. He managed to grab into his pocket and get his pocket knife out, heaven only knows how he managed to open the thing, and stab it a few times. When it got startled he slit its throat. The guy is VERY badly injured and is really lucky to be alive. Also, living in this part of the world I've heard of various grizzly (is that the black or brown?) bear attacks. I'd hate to come up against any wildlife when out hiking!
  19. Hi, I took my eTrex Venture back to the store even although it was a very good GPS but it does not display any map, only points on a map. I tried the Legend out at the store and after playing with it a bit I discovered that the map on there only goes down to main roads and streets, i.e. not all streets are displayed. What I'd like to know from Legend users and others is if it is possible to get all streets in Canada (or even just Vancouver) on the unit by using the Garmin CD for Canada (can't remember the exact name of it now)? Thanks Rob

  21. I used my new Venture under some thickish tree cover yesterday and was really amazed that it was working. I bought this GPS not really knowing much about them and it's turned out good so far.
  22. Thanks for info re GPS. I'm very new to this and don't know much about GPSes. Good to hear your points of view. Rob
  23. Thanks for this info! I'm really green at this. At least I now know I didn't buy a piece of rubbish. :-) Rob
  24. I was just wondering what the general age of people is that geocache? I'm 28. I saw geocaching on TV and it looked really interesting and kind of fun. Hope I'm not playing a childs games. :-) But it doesn't seem so. Rob
  25. Hi, I'm new to Geocaching. I just bought the Garmin eTrex Venture. Anyone else have this GPS? Is it any good? It seems to work okay but standing on my apartment balcony I get North pointing in different directions all the time even when picking up about 7 satellites. Is this normal? Does it work better when out in the open and actually looking for caches? Robert
