  1. I have a teakettle, but as it does not seal well, I have not found the perfect place for it yet.

Did a modified book cache in a library, it was stolen.

I have numerous old brass and copper sprinkler heads. Havent worked it out just yet.

I have a parking meter. Still working on how to incorporate that as well. Maybe a key in one location, and meter at next.

  2. I upgraded from my old garmin gps12 to an etrex legend because I dropped the old unit and it was no longer waterproof. I trusted garmins rep as a waterproof unit when making the purchase of the new one.

Upon inspection though, it doesnt appear to be waterproof, especially in the area of the battery compartment.

I will mostly use this in the car and for geocaching, but occasionally we will take it kayaking. For this reason mostly it needs to be waterproof, since kayaking is a pretty wet sport, and it may need to endure an occasionaly drop in a puddle or something anyway.

What are other's experiences with the waterproofness of this unit? I did a search and didnt turn up anything, so I thought maybe it hadnt been covered.

  3. Another vote for velcro here. I stick it to the dash, so it is sitting almost vertical. I have a jeep wrangler, so I just plop it above the stereo. Hard off roading has failed to shake it loose with the upgrade to "industrial grade" Velcro. I got it at Sams Club (similar to Costco)

It came in a 20 foot roll, about four inches wide, so there is plenty of uses for it. I also use the same method for my cell phone.

We are all stuck with technology, when all we really want is stuff that works.

  4. I have a Garmin GPS 12. I can see on the screen, all the lines representing my travels.

My goal is to overlay that onto a map.

I have tried ExpertGPS. I asked it to recieve my tracks from the GPS, which it did fine. Then, I tried to use the "view online" feature, which seemed like a good idea, but it just gives me a bunch of junk. Where I started, as in the coordinates, and where I ended. As if I didn't already know that. I was hoping for something else, like, I dunno, actually viewing it online.

So I also have USA Photo Maps, which downloads map data from Terra server. It is spectacular for a free program, and makes great displays of topo maps, etc. So I asked it to download the track data from my GPS, but it doesnt. It will download the waypoints no problem.

What program actually does this?! I know people are doing it, how can I do it too? Grrr.. icon_smile.gif

Will my GPS not do this feature, or is it the software?

  5. Keep in mind, that while you may be able to fit under that low hanging branch, the kiddie cargo may not.

I used to sell these things, and you wouldnt believe the stories I heard from people who bought them. That they would admit to it is kind of funny, but the kid would probably disagree. I think they told me, so that I would warn prospective buyers, so I did.

I just downloaded this program and it is pretty sweet. I can download the USGS data from terraserver with a few clicks. Not hard at all. This is pretty sweet. I am only having a little trouble getting it to see the tracks from my gpsr. I will work on it some more.

This program is the best one listed so far, in my opinion.

This and the two mentioned above should all do what you need once you figure out how to connect your GPS receiver up to your computer and communicate. Try them all and see what does the job best.

I had a lot of trouble with this program. I cannot figure out where to get maps to use on it. It also did not come with much documentation.

This is basically the same thing I was trying to do with a mountain bike trail. I will be watching the thread, hopefully there will be some good replies.

  8. I am charged with aiding the production of a new map for my local park's mountain biking trails. This is an entirely volunteer postion, but that is okay, I volunteered for it because I like it! We need to make a new trail map for our park, it has about 9 to ten miles of trails which change every year.

Our problem is getting the map correct. So, I thought we could use the my garmin GPS 12 to make a route of all the trails, then place that on a map. The trails run near a river, and some roads, so I would like to put the route on a real map that would show fairly accurate locations of all the above, especially for showing where trailheads are at.

What software would be especially useful here? I dont need super detailed maps, since I am hoping to export as a JPG or BMP file. I can edit out the junk I don't need, but probably not looking to use a topo map.

On the other hand, a topo map would be neat for the web version of our map.

First priority is a useful map for all users, put into print form, stationed at kiosks at the trailheads. Pretty standard Fare.

    Suggestions?

    Programs to avoid?

    Thanks in advance..

  9. We are all mad, arent we? We want it all, and we want it free. Well, me too. Is there a candian version of topozone where I can print actual topo maps? I found topozone to be ok in the US, but it doesnt cover CA. The one site I have found so far doesnt appear to actually have topo info.

I am going to Lion's head in two weeks to go climbing with my fiancee, and look at possible areas for our honeymoon, and it would be nice to have a map, while saving money. Every bit of money saved is another piece of life saving climbing gear... icon_smile.gif

We would also like to go geocaching, so it is all tied together.

    Any maps out there?

  11. Near Ada, Michigan. i placed the cache, then unwittingly deleted the waypoint from my GPS later. DOH!!! Someone actually found it on Easter day, and it introduced them to caching, and they love it. They dont remember where it was though. it is still out there.

The lady that found it was having a rough day, first easter separated from her daughter, she is away at college. So she went for a walk in the woods, found the cache, and it was the highlight of her day. She got a GPS and enjoys caching now!

I guess I placed it in a good spot then!

Heh, try this one. its mine. Hidden 5-6-01. found twice. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.asp?ID=2349

Sometimes it takes a while, even in a heavily populated area. Not everyone has the means to reach them all. maybe I should increase the difficulty, considering the number of finds is so low.

  14. I couldnt get easy gps for Groundspeak to download or receive anything to/from my GPS yesterday. Is there a problem with it working with xp? it downloaded caches from the site just fine, but it didnt see my gps at all.

Is there another program that maybe I should be using? Easier, and cheaper is better. Simplicity is key!

  15. I will plan on being at the lansing mall, on sat the 27th, at 10:30 am. How do we know who the others are though?

I have a hilarious story to tell regarding my "Not yet the Dodo" cache that was in lansing. I know some of you visited it when it was out there.

  17. I would like to make my own map of my favorite mountain biking trail, especially since the park maps are so wrong that people get lost all the time. What is good software to use for this? I do not own any software currently, but I have the cable. If it could overlay the track onto a topo map, that would be sweet. Then I could print it out, and provide them at the trailhead, with the other maps.

    GPS: Garmin GPS12
