  1. I've been using my magellan sportrak map and it recently took a trip out my van window and got ran over by a truck. It still works so I'm guessing it was a glancing blow but I'm thinking that its time to upgrade to another unit myself. Sometimes it takes me 5 to 10 minutes to get accurate coords when I'm placing a cache. I would prefer to stay with magellan but I guess I'm on the fence as well. I'm not looking for a ton of fancy maps and computer compatibility. I just want a highly sensitive unit that's easy to use and doesn't break the bank. Should I switch to a Garmin with the "H"? Or is there a magellan that is comparable to a Garmin with an "H" that's reasonably priced? Swizzle
  2. My wife's anniversary card, flowers and candy. I swear I put them on the table by the kitchen door. I still aint found 'em. Swizzle
  3. That's just cool. We have a road close by here that's similar to that only no lines. Its all blacktop. It runs along the river. Maybe I should consider putting a short multi on it. Swizzle
  4. I play that game myself all the time. Of course I use more grown up items to hide. Such as my keys and the remote and my neighbors tools. Swizzle
  5. Ok, I guess it was grandfathered in. I thought they had just turned it into a virtual a while back. The person set up a container and thought it came up missing. Instead of preforming maintance they decided to turn a sign (130 feet away from GZ) into a virtual. I guess that since there aren't a lot of virtual caches around then it should just be left as it is. I just think the whole set up is weird. Here, check it out. GCC82A Swizzle
  6. Sure they are. I have one on my watchlist now that the container came up missing. Now all you need to do to log ii is to take a pic of yourself at the location. Don't ask me how he got the ghosty symbol. I don't think it was grandfathered in. Swizzle
  7. At this point I can't imagine hosting a monthly CITO and definately not in the same area. Maybe an annual CITO for the great sacandaga lake and then another one or 2 but space them out so you have different volunteers from different areas. I would think that CITO's should be at least 30 to 40 miles apart if you're going to host more then one a year. I couldn't picture asking the same local cachers over and over again, every month. Why not get our own CITO truck and start a weekly route. I think CITO's should be held as special occasions and used for the biggest problem areas. Such as the one cache that I did last week. There was literally around 20 tires, a couch, an old stove, (what was left of it), and about 15 bags of household trash. Not to mention all the busted beer bottles. That's the spots I want to get to. I've seen other spots on backroads that have lazyboys, propane tanks, rugs, bikes, gardening pots and just a complete mix of stuff. Not even a quarter mile farther down the road is a $1,000 fine for littering sign. Some of this stuff has been here for several years. The towns can't regulate ever backroad all the time. With the price of trash removal going up I can see it happening more often. We pay $30+ a month for county waste or we can drive it to the next town for $10 for 3 clear bags a week or $175 for the year. If there was a place I could dump trash for a little bit of nothing per year then I would snag a bag a week and CITO a lot of these places myself. Now some of the areas I'm considering the CITO is state lands along the shore of the great sacandaga lake. Now what good would "credit in the eyes of the state" get me? Is there any real benifits other then feeling good about cleaning up a problem area on one of your local lakes? I think it would be great if they could provide food, drinks, and other stuff such as geocoins, TB's and even ammo cans and such. I think it would be great if they did also supply the trash bags and maybe gloves to the skimmish CITOers. Is there anything else I should ask for. I don't want to be greedy now. I would like to have enough donations and such to attract even more cachers to a CITO. Swizzle
  8. I'd say a bit too glossy. That'll stick out like a sore thumb. Maybe try greasing the inside of the bubble and then getting fine sand to stick to the grease. (vaseline, grease, butter, oil, slice of raw bacon?) Anything that'll hold the sand onto the bubble. I'd try a different container for the shape. I started off using those bubbles to try to make fake ant hills. Still working on that one. Just some ideas for you to try. Swizzle
  9. If you take all the time and effort of carving out a real rock the size of an ammo can then you really need to protect it. I would definately make it premium members only, hide it at least 3 miles back in the woods and make the rock a big one. Say 80lbs after its carved out. Personally I would go with a make your own out of concrete. A buddy of mine did just that with a peanut butter jar in it. The rock is definately showing signs of deteriation though and it was place in 2005 or 6. Can anyone recommend a type of concrete that will hold up better? I was also wondering if rebar or hardware mesh should be used to help strengthen the "rock" I don't think you'd need to much cover if you can get moss to grow on it before you place it. But then again the constant moist enviroment may have been his rocks undoing. Swizzle
  10. I might not have had a lot of people at my first event but I definately did as planned. I learned more about what I need to do to get more cachers to come to an event. A CITO I would definately post at least a month in advance. I might also see about getting someone from that area to donate some kind of food. Donuts and coffee maybe from the local DnD? That would look good for them if they sponsered such and event in our area. Especially if they knew there would be some type of media coverage even if it was no more then a newspaper clipping with a pic of the CITO in action. Am I starting to think more clearly now? Would they be willing to donate a few dollars towards CITO coins and TB's and such? How would you start such an event? Contact the local newspaper first or the local businesses or the town that you plan on doing the cleanup in? I'm sure the coins & things would need to be ordered ahead of time. Any more ideas would be great. I'm all eyeballs at this point. Swizzle
  11. No need to wipe it on some poor unsuspecting kid. It has a carbiner!! I can just hook it on his collar. I'm thinking about shoving the pencil in his nose just for added space in the container of course. Swizzle
  12. Hi all. I'm fairly new to the idea of CITO. I've done a couple caches that were set up as CITO caches and I try to do my fair share around all of my cache spots. I'm in the process of starting a new geocaching group that would partially specialize in CITO in the ADK (Adirondacks region of NY). Any help at all on making the perfect CITO cache and hosting CITO events would be great. I plan on starting around the GSL (Great Sacandaga Lake), and then working into the backwoods areas. My idea as of right now is to go to Wally World and get as many free film cans as I can possibly grab. Cram a shopping bag into each one and mark it CITO. I think I can get more bags into the cache container this way as well as reducing the amount of maintance on each cache which would allow me to maximize the amount of caches that I can maintain in a given year. If I can get say a dozen active caching members to do the same spread through the adirondacks then I see 100 and maybe even 200 active CITO caches possible as well as CITO events that we could set up and host as well. I would also like to consider a CITO meter for our profile. It would simply be a counter for how much trash we remove each year. 153 shopping bags, 25 garbage bags, 2 couchs and a microwave. That sort of thing. A live counter that is added to every time someone removes a bag full from our regular CITO caches as well as our CITO events. Has anyone done this before? Any help on how to set up a CITO event and the local officals to contact as well as media to promote CITO in the ADK would be great. Thanx for reading. Swizzle
  13. I've been planning on setting up a cache at broomstick lake in one of my local towns. Its the site where they filmed the original Last of the Mohicans. Just give me all the info you think I'll need and a the two copies and I'll gladly set one out. I may even watch the one copy and then put it in another cache for others to see. That's if I can get permission to put it in a place called Brayhouse Gore. Swizzle
  14. This is a fun thread. I'm getting ready to place my newest cache "Booger" Which sounds better to everyone. Just plain "Booger" or "Booger in a Tree Hole". I just posted a pic of him in CCC a few days ago. Swizzle
  15. I was looking for a really good place to put my booger. I was surfing my mapping program and I finally located two likely spots. I narrowed it down to 1 spot and I'll be putting my bugger in a tree hole at the base of a big hill or small mountain called Big Nose. It was either here or across the river at the base of Little Nose. Big Nose wins and my bugger will be placed this week. Swizzle
  16. I can understand the garmin gun mix up. I've been questioned a few times about my Magellan .22 MicroSlayer Sportrak Map. My wife owns a Garmin 357 that's bored out for a .38 special. She's taken many an ammo cans with it. She claims its for her own personal protection from irrate muggles, but I know better. She's after the big game. Swizzle
  17. The Blue Line was a purposed line around an area of land that was to be protected. The man responsible for creatng the Ble Line is in my anscestory. His name is Verplanck Colvin. That land is now known as the Adirondacks or ADK for short. So now I want to use my GPS to CITO the ADK, ASAP. Swizzle
  18. Yes I'm talking about the the opaque ones. Which I recently read about as being the best choice in film cans. Not the overall best choice by any means but superior to the grey and black. It shouldn't be a problem at all when I get some extra $$ for nat geo paper. Then I can fill the can with water and the only complaints I'll get is from a soggy pencil that fell apart well trying to write. Swizzle
  19. That sign is just awesome. You should post that on instructables. I'd love to see a step by step of a different sign. Complete with pics and video. Swizzle
  20. I think this is turning out to be a rather good thread. I had to laugh at Boobie Girdlebuns. Just the name reminded me of a bumper sticker I saw yesterday right below a religious sticker. It simply said, "FEEL YOUR BOOBIES" I thought it was funny to see this right below a jesus saves sticker. It was to raise awarness for breast cancer. I think I might have to name a cache just that. I don't know about all of you other guys out there but I support healthy boobies....well at least until I get slapped. Swizzle
  21. That's what I did have was the dura-rite. I haven't had any complaints about it but then again I've never left it underwater. With the shipping I paid over $6 for one little 3x5 notepad. I can go to big lots and buy 24 regular notebooks for that price. If I had a choice with money being no option then I'd have dura-copy in all of my caches. What I was doing, until I ran out last week, was cutting out a sheet here and there and using it for micro's. I was also cutting off 2 lines for coords for multi's. What I want to do is put dura-copy in my long distant caches. The last thing I want to do is go hiking the same trail 10 times a year for a soggy log. I've got 2 multi's I've been toying with that would be 8 miles of hiking one way. I'm gonna do a test using just plain tape as laminate to see how that will hold up after a week, month and a year of submersion for my stash notes. Where's the cheapest place to get the durarite notebooks or should I just get the nat geo paper and print out micro logs to place in all my caches? I think 25 sheets would be enough for 50 caches a year. Well I think I just answered my own question there. I'll be getting some nat geo paper soon. I'll need it if I'm gonna set up some underwater caches anyways. Swizzle
  22. I have a couple: Perth Bellnanos (nano on a bell) & Underwhere in the woods. I'm sure there's some better ones out there. Swizzle
  23. I mentioned the CITO caches as a future plan for several areas around the ADK (Adirondacks). The reason I posted it only 2 weeks ago is because I didn't want a huge turn out. The spot I'm hosting this only has room for about 20 people if everyones camping. Once I get this event under my belt then I should have a good idea as to what I want to do next year. I probably should have made it by RSVP so I'd know exactly who is coming and then be able to limit the amount of people. Hopefully I'll have at least one other cacher there that's hosted an event before that can give me a few pointers. Next year I'll be sure that the planning for the event starts at least 2 months ahead of time. Swizzle
  24. Since we are in confession mode I'll come out with my evil hide. I took one of those yellow fluffy caccoons and sliced it open. Took out mr. wiggles (sorry mr. wiggles) and used a combo of map sealer and hair spray all over it. I made sure that it was spread open enough in the back that it clips onto the rest of the evilness. I then made a scroll log out of tyvek and a toothpick, rolled it up to fit inside a quarter inch piece of straw and then superglued the straw to a neodymium magnet. Snap on the cover/caccoon and stuck it to a guard rail. I triple checked the coords over the course of 3 days and everytime I checked (and I still do) I get the gps down to 2 feet. The guard rail sticks out from anything else so your search is right there on the end of that guard rail. Check out Swizzle's Dark Side in my profile and read some of the logs. Swizzle
  25. Print out your cache log on net geo paper and tell everyone to bring waterproof trades. Then you can roll up your log in a match safe like Griz and poke some holes in your main container. I'd anchor some type of small float right next to its intended location so people know where to return it. I'm also thinking about adding some type of metal plate, magnet system that would allow people to fish for it. Or a large dull hook, heavy wire and a metal loop on the cache that you can see from the boat. Swizzle
