  1. I had forgotten all about my test and this post. I did find my PB container in the bushes about a month ago and everything was still nice and dry. Almost 5 months I'd say its as good as any other container as long as extra precautions are taken to keep it waterproof. I'd use it in a tree hole for sure. I'd also like to keep this type close to the road and above wet ground just to ensure it stays dry and easily accessible for maintenance. For extra water protection you could put a scroll log in a fuji film can inside the jar. Add a plastic zippy in case anyone wants to add there McJunk to the mix. One of my caches is an ammo can next to a waterfall. This is the second ammo can I've had in the same spot and both have needed maintenance due to condensation in the cache. Ammo cans are great but even they aren't perfect. Its all about location and I'm about to remove the ammo can and find a new container for the area. I'll probably be hiding it a good 100 feet from the original though. Swiz

  2. In the stores that have your basic tooth supplies, floss and such, you can find temporary tooth filling. It comes in a really small plastic nano sized can. Kinda like a baby film can. These types of nanos are EMF detector proof. Glue on a magnet or a really small patch of velcro and your good to go. Swiz

  3. A picture of the girl and her sad story will have nothing to do with the cache I'm setting. The cache is a part of the game. I'll have the coords to the memorial as well as her name in the cache. (Ex: To those who wish to view (the girls name) Memorial then feel free to visit these coords.), It will be plain, straight forward and simple. You visit or you don't. No smiley, no game, just a simple memorial. If it irritates you then I apologize but I feel I'm doing the right thing and everyone I've discussed this with outside of this forum has agreed that its a really good sentiment. For the amount of nay sayers here vs. those who are for it I'd still have to say that I'm right in doing this. This is not for a game or for money or for any other purpose that would forward me in any aspect of my life. This in my opinion is pure and simple respect. The cache name and listing will be devoid of any hint of the memorial if that makes it better but I doubt it. At this point I think more people would be disappointed with me for not setting this up after I said I would. If any of her family members are in disagreement with me on this then I'll gladly take down the memorial as soon as humanly possible. I'll even take that step to attempt to contact a family member and get their opinion first. Swizzle

  4. As far as Waymarking goes I don't think this would fit into the category because at present there is no memorial in place. The object of this memorial is to give people who knew the girl or people in general who have followed this story locally a place to give a moment of silence. In my opinion to turn my memorial to this girl into a waymark is to turn her tragedy into a game. I will place the memorial in close proximity to the cache that I place here. The cache which will earn people their smiley will also give them the coords and exact location of the memorial. No extra smiley for visiting the memorial. I feel that doing it this way will keep it outside of the game and much more respectful. I appreciate all of your opinions but in this case I think this is the best way to do this memorial. Swiz

  5. I'm sorry if you think its a bit crass. I don't think it would be possible to find the family as they live in Colorado and I live in New York. I'm sure with you cachers that have been caching long enough that most would be more annoyed by a simple LPC or bad, soggy swag then an out of the way memorial cache that would most likely see 10 people a year. I can leave the websites out if that would be viewed as a personal agenda. I've been to caches in cemeteries, memorials, and one in a shrine and many consider those distasteful. I really think its a matter of opinion. It will be clearly stated what this cache is meant for and if someone doesn't agree with it then there is always the ignore button. What I think would be disrespectful is to just enable the cache I disabled to hold the place and let people play a game where a tragedy took place. There will always be people for and against anything and everything that another man does. There's no denying that. I will be placing the cache much to the dismay of a few but I also know that many others will enjoy the thought of it. I will do this in the most respectful manor possible and what I'm asking here is for opinions from people that agree with me on this one. I'd like to keep this thread on the positive side if possible. I'm not trying to aggravate anyone in any way shape or form. I won't be placing any huge flower covered crosses for all to see. Just a cache that would allow some a moment of silence if they so choose or a quick TFTC if they prefer not to. I don't feel like I'm winning the game by placing another cache so other then the websites issue I don't see any problems with agenda. Thank you to everyone who has replied. Swizzle

  6. I'll check your caches out in the morning. Its getting late and I'm on my way to bed. There is no actual memorial in the area. My cache would be the only memorial. The girl was found across the road from my cache about a half mile into the woods. The two things I want to accomplish with this cache is complete respect for the girl and her family and awareness for missing children. This is in an out of the way place so smiley hunters tend to avoid caches here. So no candle and I'll go from here. Thanx for your input and I will check your caches out tomorrow for sure. Thanx again. Swizzle

  7. Last year I had to disable a cache because of the local law enforcement questioning me about it. It was found during there investigation of the area where the remains of a young girl was found. I haven't archived the cache yet because I want to set up a proper memorial for the girl. I want this to be very tastefully done and I'd like some ideas on how to do it. I can either print out a picture of this girl or paint her face on the side of an ammo can. All I can give is a date of birth and rough estimate of her death. Most likely within 48 hours of her being reported missing about 5 years ago. I was thinking that I should have her pic laminated and placed inside with some info about her. Is there anything else you guys and girls can think of that would be a great way for people to pay their respects to this girl? I also plan on adding a website or two to the cache page, those would be links to missing children sites. Would a candle in the cache be considered inappropriate in this case? I will most likely place a small bouquet of fake flowers. I really want to do this right and I want your honest opinions on this cache. Thanx for reading. Swizzle

  8. Well my gasket test seemed to be working all right. I had it submerged for 4 days with no leaks at all. I decided that I needed to eat so the jar came out and I used the pot to cook my noodles and forgot to put it back in for the next 3 days of testing. So I decided to step it up a notch. There's a nice heavy rock already in it and I know cachers aren't always nice to caches so I tossed this one off of my deck into the bushes. A good 7 to 8 feet drop to the ground. I'll be sure to check it after we get another rain storm. Morning dew has been heavy the past few days too. Its been outside for about 3 days. My testing is only accounting for the beginning quality of the seal and does not account for human error. I think this jar is gonna weather it out for a few months in the bushes. Swizzle

  9. Swizzle, I've seen gobs of bottles used as cache containers, and I've often found it difficult to extract the log, as they tend to unroll a bit inside the bottle. The neck of the bottle creates a choke point. I think you've come up with a rather ingenious resolution to this issue.

It seems to work just fine for me. I started off by making a simple ring out of a small bit of stiff wire. About half the thickness of a coat hanger maybe a little less. The pvc rings are nice because there is more surface area to prevent the scroll log from sliding out of the ring and opening up inside the container. The only other thing I'm considering doing is to rough up the pvc and paint it flourecent orange so that if a cacher drops it well signing the log its easily found and you just wrap the log around the pencil and put the log and pencil through the pvc ring and slide it right back in the bottle. The 1/2" conduit slides right in to one of those power shot bottles. It feels like it was made to fit it. An 8 foot piece of conduit is less then a $1 and you should be able to get almost 100 rings out of it. At first I was making a tube out of the conduit the same length as the power shot bottle itself but then its a pain to get the log out of the tube. In my opinion these are a heck of a lot better then pill bottles, and film cans and you still have just a little room for small trade items. By small I mean you have to be able to fit it inside the mouth of a soda bottle. So go out and buy yourself a dozen power shots and start drinking them now. Just drink enough to keep you awake long enough to finish turning the whole dozen into large micro caches. I take off the sticker and rough them up to get rid of the shiney but I suppose you could wrap them with camo duct tape as well. On two of them I removed the plastic ring on the neck below the cap and with some stiff wire you have a nice place to wrap the wire around the neck and make a hook to hang it in a tree. Swizzle

I am probably missing something here, but once the neck is cut off the bottle how is the bottom sealed?

Which post are you refering to? Mine or the obese nano? Swizzle

  11. I've seen this one done before. I always wondered how much of the bottle that you cut off. Can you make another one and show a quick step by step? I'm assuming that you use some kind of pvc glue/sealer? Where'd you get the magnet and how strong is it. I like this cache. Its like a chubby nano. Swizzle

sure give me some time to drink some lipton iced tea

Cool. I've been cutting 1" long sections of 1/2" pvc conduit and using that to hold my rolled up scroll log and pencil. It then slides into one of those power shot bottles nice and easy. Its the next best thing to a preform and you still have a little room for small trade items and its completely waterproof. I have one that's been underwater in the field for about a month now and as far as I know its holding up just fine. I think this idea is pretty dang cool as well. Swizzle

  12. I just found a much better alternative to placing a geocache in a cemetery. Not that I won't do it again but...I recently gave Waymarking another try and I decided if I'm going to try it to at least give it more then a passing glance. I realized that I can waymark cemeteries and not place a physical container. Waymarking is a little newer then geocaching but it is still growing and I think its a wonderful way to add to a cemetery experience. One cemetery I just waymarked in the world wide cemetery database catagory is in my own hometown. It now has 2 waymarks and will soon have 3. One is the cemetery itself, another is Edward Haynes Sargent the man who changed the face of NY when he engineered and designed the Great Sacandaga Lake, and the next waymark will be a double. I'm going to waymark the benchmark and then log it myself. Right now I have 1 cemetery that is waymarked with a cannon and I know of at least 2 other cemeteries with cannons. Granted I still think the site needs work but I think in many cases a cemetery should have a waymark instead of a geocache. Just my personal opinion. Swizzle

  13. Wow!! I'm editing this whole thing. I don't sound so smart after drinking a little to much of gramps dandilion wine. My original idea sounded good to me last night but I don't think I got a good point across. I wanted to use some kind of speaker that would help to deter people from illegally dumping in the middle of the night. Just something that said "HEY" really loud and fast so its tough to pinpoint. Now that I'm a little "clearer" I guess it wouldn't be such a good idea to have a loud speaker yelling in the woods at someone who may just be parking there for a number of other reasons that aren't bad. Sorry to all of those subjected to my drunkeness. Now for something a little more reasonable. My original idea was to place a night cache inside the tunnel. A fake rubber bat with a magnet placed inside of him. His mouth is a little larger then the size of a bison tube. Do you think it'd be possible to hook him up to a noise maker? I was also thinking a remote control set up with 2 red leds for his eyes. Only problem is I'm not all that technical. Reading schematics is like reading greek to me. Any ideas? Swizzle

  14. I'd log a DNF. I hunted the cache and didn't find it. The reason is irrelevant. Some people might feel a note is warranted rather than a DNF. It's basically up to you, but you should at least log something.

I recently had a cacher log a DNF on a cache because they couldn't find the parking area. The one cache that they did find is probably a tenth of a mile to the trailhead to my cache. I personally would have rather seen a posted note that said they didn't look for it then to have an added DNF to a cache that's found 3 or 4 times a year. It makes the next few cachers think twice unless they scan the logs for the reason a DNF was used. Some do, some don't. Swizzle

  15. "Household Items That Make Good Containers"

I don't know about you, but I have no ammo boxes or lock n locks laying around as household items. So to go back to the topic: Prescription type pill bottles are win. You can get them in all kinds of sizes. And if you don't know any elderly people most pharmacies sell them very cheap.

If your looking for cheap or free then go to wally world and ask for the opaque film cans. The ones white fuji ones. You'll get a few for free. Then go to the post office and get some tyvek shipping envelopes and cut out a few sheets for a simple scroll log. Tell everyone to bring their own pen and your done. Swizzle

  16. One of our local caches was archived so I took over the spot and placed a cache named SLITHER!!

I have a small rubber snake wired to the cap. You unscrew the cap and out he pops. The that same cap I have a larger snake wired up and set off to the side of the cache between a dual stump. When you pull on it he pops out from his hidey hole. I also have the cache covered in bark and a rubber coiled snake on top. So far only one person has found it and said nothing about it. The previos cache mentioned that they thought they saw a rattler next to the cache. I figure that's what the attributes are for. Swizzle

  17. neither does an ammo can hold up to keeping out humidity, but most people seem to be fine using those.

Unless ammo cans have changed drastically in the recent past, they don't utilize a non-gasketed slip on lid. As I recall from the last time I opened one, (about 5 minutes ago), ammo cans utilize a high pressure compression gasket incorporated into a rather durable lid. As such, I would rate them as quite a bit better at repelling moisture than what is, essentially, a mini cookie tin. No container will keep moisture out if opened during a hurricane, but ammo cans will keep moisture out in all but the most drastic scenarios. A metal tin whose lid simply squeezes in place probably can't make the same claim. For an arid environment, I imagine those spice containers would do fine, but if your state has more than, say, 1% average humidity, I'm thinking they might not be adequate even when tucked out of direct contact with rain.

One of my first caches was an altoids tin and the log was in a mini ziplock inside it. I had this wedged into a crack in the side of a log. It was only out for a year or so but the log was still nice and dry and the container itself was starting to rust. Not perfect but I suppose I would use it again for a quick fix until I found a more suitable container. My new favorite cache container is the first aid kits that you can buy at target. They have a nice gasket on them and its too early to tell but I think it'll be fine for a couple years in the wild. What is that stuff that you guys use to protect the gasket? Some kind of silcone spray or something like that. I'm hoping to pick some up soon. I'd like to have it in my maintance kit for when I'm cachin'. Right now I'm doing a test on a peanut butter jar. I bought some thin foam sheets in the craft section of target and I used the jar itself to make the circle in the foam and then I cut out the foam just slightly bigger then that circle and it fits perfectly in the top. Right now its upside down in a pot of water. I have a rock holding a wad of TP to the lid which will be the first place that see's water if there's any leaks at all. This is the same exact jar that I put water in and shook it good to clean out the excess peanut butter and it leaked pretty dang bad. Hopefully this actually does the trick. If not I'll try adding a 2nd and maybe a third foam circle or I'll go to the auto store and buy some gasket maker and try that around the inside of the jar lid. I'll let you know how my test comes out. This is day 1 and next friday I'll dry off the jar good and pop it open to see if there's any water inside. Swizzle
