Every map I am using shows disabled caches by default. Is there some app that can cause difficulties to find a disabled event?

The official app doesn't show disabled caches (including events) at all, other than your own.

I have recently experienced a problem when browsing for caches in any location whether it’s my home location or looking elsewhere. For some reason the caches are now displayed as a list, as shown. I have lost the function to display as shown in rows as per above users MoleandToad and Kunarion. This has only happened recently, but is really annoying as I’ve always found it much easier to read when the data is shown in rows. It also enables you to sort on any of the rows, although I only tend to use the found date for sorting.

Check your Prefernces in your Profile Settings and see if "Display search results directly on map" has been checked:

  3. One of my caches GCA3Q55, an image-based puzzle based on RGB values that was published over a year ago and has been fine until now, has suddenly become problematic for some players with the image not showing on their devices. It's fine on my Windows PC and Android phone running the official app, but it apparently doesn't show on iOS phones with either the official app or Cachly.

On the cache page I used the following URL to display the image: https://www.dropbox.com/s/fuh608u83qisvxz/GCA3Q55.png?dl=1

I can't use the geocaching site to host the image because all uploaded images now get quietly converted to progressive jpeg which destroys the exact RGB values.

    Any thoughts on this?

This has probably been discussed before but I can't find anything about it, when checking a friends finds using his/hers profile I used to get a list of their finds sorted latest first, nowadays I get a map (probably with their earliest find), not being able to see their latest finds, any way to change this?

In your Profile settings under Preferences, you haven't by chance ticked the box called "Display search results directly on map", have you?

  5. The Help Centre makes it pretty clear:

    Quote

You can log caches online as "Found" after you visited the coordinates and signed the logbook.

Anyone can post an online log from anywhere in the world. To sign the logbook, you need to have gone to where it is, found the cache and opened it. If you've done those three things, why is taking another ten seconds to add your name to the logbook so much trouble?

    What do you think?

    Well, since you asked...

I think it's great that caching has tapped into your special interest in World Heritage sites and areas and, as you said, you got great satisfaction from completing that challenge cache, but isn't that enough? I should also point out that the "Wonders" souvenirs from a few years back had nothing to do with any actual Wonders, apart from the promotion's storyline, all you had to do was find a specific number of caches that had been randomly assigned individual Wonders.

A lot of cachers, particularly those who have been in the game for a fair number of years, have special interests. For me, it's caches that get me out in the wilds and take me to places of surprising natural beauty. I've even created a couple of challenges that encourage finds on those sorts of caches and a lot of the (admittedly small) number of challenges I've done are in a similar vein. I've gotten far more satisfaction from completing those challenges than I would have done if it had just got me a souvenir, particularly if the souvenir is awarded for finding just one such cache.

So really, in a nutshell, I think challenge caches are a much better way of targeting special interests like yours, rather than souvenirs which tend to be a lot more generalist in nature.

but why do you wanna see my gallery ...?

Well not your gallery in particular, but they say a picture paints a thousand words and I'd hope my own gallery provides a good overview of my caching adventures. For me at least, caching is a community game where we hide caches for others to find and share our experiences of those caches with that community. The gallery is a part of that sharing. If someone wants to hide their gallery that's fine, but if they haven't, it doesn't mean anyone looking at it has sinister intentions.

You need to find a cache on the day it was published

If it's asking you to find a cache on the same date, regardless of year, then look at your local caches and note the placed date. Find a cache on the same month/day as one of those caches were placed.

Placed date is generally not the same as Published date.

What happens if you put a stamp in a challenge cache?

Yes the rules do need to be consistent, but it's a bit of circular logic to say letterboxes can't be bonuses just because that is the rule, mainly because it just takes a simple 'unless' statement in the rules to make that option seemingly workable, in much the same way as the rule 'any cache type plus stamp equals letterbox' rule had the 'unless it's a bonus' statement added to it at some point. You can make the rules do anything really, it just needs to be rationalised as to why it is either a good or bad idea to do so. My question is simply what is that ratiionale behind the decision, not what does the rule say.

So should a Challenge Cache with a stamp in it be listed as an LBH? Maybe it should, but on the other hand the long-standing definition of a challenge is a Mystery cache with the word "Challenge" in the title.

  10. 58 minutes ago, Mr Indoorsman said:

The rules should make sense in themselves. The 'stick a stamp in a container and it's absolutely a letterbox' rule.....except when it's not (sometimes), is a good example of an inconsistent rule that doesn't align with other existing rules.

But that's in conflict with another rule that says a bonus cache must be a Mystery cache, so something has to give. Tied into that is the Bonus Cache attribute which, along with the Challenge Cache attribute, is only available in Mystery caches. What happens if you put a stamp in a challenge cache?

Is it possible to delete a log from another player on my Ad Lab.- they didn't fully complete it .

As far as I know, it isn't possible to log a Review unless you've completed all the stages. And how do you know they didn't complete it? The Statistics page on the builder site only shows the first ten completions and the first three on each stage, beyond that everything is completely anonymous.

Sometimes you find yourself in a situation where presigning is there to be done because you may never get back to that location

Maybe you have found yourself in such a situation. I have never found myself in such a situation because I don't search for challenge caches that I don't already qualify for.

A few years back, I was with a group of cachers doing a bunch of caches around the Colo River north-west of Sydney, including a trail of challenge caches. There were some I qualified for, some I was close to qualifying and some I was well short of, but they were all in the PQ of the area I'd loaded onto my Garmin the night before and couldn't easily tell which was which while we were walking along the trail, so I just signed the log of each cache we found and left it until I got home to decide which ones got Found logs and which got WNs. Since then, I've qualified for one or two I was close to and added a Found log.

There's another challenge cache GC5KEY1 that I'm slowly working towards. It requires 40 finds that are terrain 4 or higher and with the Cliifs/Falling Rocks, Scenic View and Difficult Climb attributes and so far I have 27, so it'll probably be at least some years before I qualify. The cache itself, in fairly remote mountainous country, is terrain 4.5 and has all those attributes so it's not one I'd want to attempt alone, and given I turn 70 later this year, it may well be beyond my physical abilities by the time I do qualify. So if my group of caching friends were to organise a trip out there I'd jump at the chance to join them and at least get my name in the logbook while I'm able to, and if that were to happen I'd probably then make more of an effort to find the remaining 13 caches I need.

I had fun playing it , some locations I have been to before which was fun . I got the souvenier. However i dont want to pay to play geoguesser .

For some reason i have a geoguesser link on my GC profile page.
Any idea how to get rid of it ?

I have that on my dashboard too but I haven't even gone near the geoguesser game. I expect it's just a direct link that they've provided for the duration of the promotion and will go away after it's ended.

  14. While not in the same league as some of the others mentioned in this thread, one of my hides celebrated its tenth birthday a few weeks ago and yesterday also had its 100th find. It's still the original container and logbook, with plenty of room for another decade of finds in the latter. It's nothing spectacular, just a small Sistema tucked under a rock ledge where it's protected from direct sun.

It doesn't get many finds now, only four in the past year, but even my newest hides don't get much more than that.

Also, once I solve the puzzle on the website, why don't the coordinates update in the app?

Try swiping down on the cache page in the app, which forces a refresh. If the cache has been previously opened in the app, everything is cached and doesn't refresh automatically.

  16. I've fared a bit better, 49 were placed this year although two of those were mine. It looks like it just lists all unfound caches within 48.28km (I guess that's some round number in miles) and sorted by placed date. Most of the ones in my list are in Sydney but looking at it reminded me of a few I should have a go at sometime.

Edit: it looks like it also includes caches I've found. Odd.

I don't know why it is unavailable, the location Is near the old cathedral of St Peter and Paul (old ruins), are certain locations blocked off from hiding geocaches?

There's a multi GCZKJM that appears to have physical waypoints around the cathedral. You can't place a cache within 161m of the physical waypoints (or final) of another cache.

Not only is that option not on the page, but this made me wonder if they are removing that function:

    https://forums.geocaching.com/GC/index.php?/topic/396606-gccom-find-count-not-updating-after-undeleting-lab-cache-finds/

I routinely delete all my AL finds from the website as, even with the small number I've done, they're way out of proportion to my regular caching. This is what I'm currently seeing on labs.geocaching.com:

    image.png.c2a54a7b3a9ce174ab2775a804579655.png

So yes, it looks like they've removed the "Show deleted" and are instead just showing them straight away. Clicking on Undelete works, though I didn't check whether it incremented my find count.
