  1. "Pardon me . . . do you expect to be needing us over here?"
  2. I've heard of local, state, and national parks; local, state, and national forests; local, state, and national recreation areas. But what are local, state, and national Wal-Marts?
  3. I'm getting this error on the Verizon Razr V3C that I just got yesterday. The http://rtr.ca/geo site works, but as someone else reported, you can't see coordinates because a login is required. Oh good... it's not just me. I also get the same error with the same phone. Me too, same phone, same provider, same problem. I am having the problem with my new Alltel Motorola E815. Add me to the list. I noticed some fixes for the Motorola's in the past, but have no idea what any of it means. Hope someone can figure it out. Still no luck with my Razr V3C, even after a firmware update on it a few day ago. Also tried the suggestion about clearing cache, cookies, and memory.
  4. Ahh, that could be. I got a Paypal notice of some issue with my payment going through; it's supposed to be reprocessed but I don't think it's happened yet. Thanks.
  5. When editing my profile, the Forum Title field shows up as blank instead of showing the old title. When I fill it in with a new value and register the changes with the forum, it doesn't "take". My forum title shows up with the generic "Geocacher" title, and when I go back to my GC profile, that field is blank again. I am able to change avatars without any problem.
  6. One more thing that: some people will use as evidence that they are better, smarter, more experienced than other people other people will get all angsty about No thanks. The only time I find someone else's find count interesting is when they log a DNF on my cache. If it's someone with hundreds of finds, I might be more inclined to run out and check on it than if it's their third search. And I can tell that just by looking at their log.
  7. Titanium Members get to use the Groundspeak helicopter. And get notifications of new caches before the owners even list them. And get to have dinner with Hydee regularly. Sorry . . . . by invitation only.
  8. So you don't believe that "One Picture is Worth Ten Thousand Words"? Now posting a picture of a llama would be considered non-constructive IMHO. Meh. 'Tain't worth wasting a perfectly good llama on.
  9. Anyone seen MadMarty around? He seemed to know something about apologies, maybe he could straighten things out.
  10. I don't know too many companies who consult with their customers about their website operations, unless they are planning a major change that will substantially affect the use of the site. I haven't seen much, if anything, happen here that I would characterize as being significant enough to warrant a lot of prior notification. From what I've seen, when there's a problem (such as forum outages), Groundspeak is already a lot more forthcoming than most companies with regard to what the problem was and what's being done to address it.
  11. I'm not sure it was archived (despite Max Cacher's comments); it sounds to me like it was a new listing that was not approved. Cemetery could be right next to RR tracks for all we know.
  12. I don't understand why OP is being advised to wait a week or more to log a "Needs Maintenance". He's already been there and knows that it needs maintenance. Sure, I understand that he's sent an e-mail, but there's nothing wrong with posting the NM log, too, as long as he keeps it positive. "Container is in bad condition and has been leaking a lot, all the contents were wet. A more durable container might be a good idea for this location." He's not criticizing the cache owner by posting an NM, and he's not saying it's a carpy cache. Even the most conscientious owners have problems with their caches from time to time. By posting the NM log, he's also giving the next visitor a chance to carry along a new container, should they wish to do so, to use as either a temporary or permanent replacement. Back before the days of the NM log, I had noticed that one of the caches in an area I was headed to had had several Found logs reporting problems, so I made it point to take a new container with me to save the owner a trip.
  13. I don't know whether I'm 5thing or 6thing Seth!'s point but I highly agree. And the above statement is the answer to the problem. Only quote pertinent parts. We don’t even need to quote all the pertinent parts to get the point across. And definitely lose the photos! <snip> Yes, but if you do make sure you note the you have modified the post. Some people will get irate if you don't. Then there are some that will get irate if you change their post at all. I'm irate just because you posted.
  14. How do you quote part of something? Delete the parts you don't need. Like that.
  15. <the snail pulls up a chair & sits back to watch>
  16. It's not clear whether the cachers who wrote the log referred to here were carrying protection or not.
  17. It was vary wrong for that cacher to right that stuff in a log book! fist off a log book is only supposed to used for shot stories about finding the cache. Having sex sounds like it has nothing to do with finding a cache to me. That is too much information! Especially since we have cachers of all ages. people should not be righting that privet stuff down. He should keep his own sexual thoughts to himself, and not in the log book! Well, it might, if your day is going especially well. But I agree that you shouldn't "right" about it in the log, whether online or paper.
  18. Thanks, Torry. There will be a little extra bupkus in your envelope this month. Oh, wait. You don't get the monthly envelopes, do you. Nevermind.
  19. I work across the street from Union Station. I would be glad to meet you and pick up the bug if you wish. I can either get it into a cache somewhere, or else take it to our local group's event this Saturday for someone to pick up. PM me via the forums, or e-mail via gc.com if you are interested.
  20. And on topic: King Riched, take a look at a lot of different web pages. Make notes on the things you like, and the things you don't like about them. Keep your initial efforts simple. Don't try to use frames and animated graphics and 127 different fonts and sixteen different colors just because you can. The biggest mistake beginners make is to try to use as many different "cool" things as they can all at once. If you start building something that has multiple pages, be sure to keep a consistent look and feel across the pages. They should have identical (or very similar) headers and footers. Keep your menus, buttons, and so on in the same relative places -- i.e., don't use "OK" and "Cancel" in one place, and then "No" and "Yes" in another -- notice not just the change in words, but how the positive/negative choices have switched? Even if you're just testing something out, as someone else has noted, it's very important to give credit to words you copy directly from somewhere else. First, it shows you're honest. Second, it gives that other source credit for the work they've done. Third, it helps your web page user know where they might look for more information. And seriously, if you want anyone to really take an interest in your web pages, you have to be attentive to spelling, grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure. If this is hard for you, ask someone to help you out. Check your work once, twice, three times, and then check it again. Nothing destroys the credibility and interest in a web site more than sloppiness. Sorry if any earlier words seemed harsh. All we want is for you to make a little effort at communicating like an adult when you're among adults. It's never too early to learn that skill, and it will carry you far.
  21. Please read the example here. What part of that is beyond the language skills of a 10-year-old or older? I'm going to get a little personal here, and if a moderator feels free to step in that is cool. At first I thought no way does this person (you) have kids, or is around kids. Then I look at your profile, public info, and see that you are an Assistant Scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts of America. How can you talk down to a kid like that, when you are associated with such a great program for kids? Did they teach you that at Wood Badge? I have been involved in Scouting nearly all my life. I have been our town's Scoutmaster for years. I know what I am talking about, and what scouting is. 99% of scouting is leading by example and teaching kids to be leaders. You are not just a scout leader when you put on the uniform. You are a scout leader all the time. Day and night. If you disagree, read your leader's handbook. Perhaps you should not draw conclusions from a single thread. King Riched has received help, and gentle suggestions on improving his communications, from me and many others on numerous other occasions. Yes, I've been around lots of kids. And when an adult gently guides them toward improving their communication skills, they respond. Except for King Riched. Refusing to remind him of the importance of good communication basically gives him the message that it's OK to sound illiterate. I do teach by example. Most of the kids who see and hear my example get the message. The ones who aren't interested in the message generally go away to hang out with a crowd that accepts illiteracy.
