  1. (I haven't read through the whole topic yet) I never thought to not read the descriptions. I always do, no matter how long it is. Normally I'll read it out loud while my husband drives to the cache if its urban and if its in a park one of us reads it out loud while walking to it. But we never start our search without reading it first. But I would be really upset to learn that most people skip the information. I try to keep my cache descriptions not too long but I like to actually teach people something! A lot of my caches have long paragraphs of information, like my series The Value of a Dollar which are all park and grabs in front of Dollar Trees. But in each one I teach you something about US Currency and I take my time to put together the information. I like to make it a little more interesting then just another park and grab, you know? It takes me well over an hour to do most of my cache pages because not only do I put together information I code the pages to look nice, which with the new app you have to click web to actually see which is disappointing because I know most people don't. I would take a cache that teaches you something over one that has no description any day.
  2. I hate the new app in general. Geocaching was starting to get big in my area because of the local parks giving free "classes" on it. But now that is going to be almost impossible because they would need everyone to pay for a premium account to see anything more then LPCs. The amount they are limited to is ridiculous, when I first joined the free app was ehh but paying $10 once to see if we like it is a lot different then signing up for a membership. They are basically limited to LPCs and very very few else, most caches in parks are at least a 2 for terrain. So if when I first joined all I could see was anything 1.5 or lower I would have said this is stupid and given up on it. I really dislike the new app in general though, I don't think it was actually ready to launch. Some things are nice but its all aesthetic and much less functional than the old app in my opinion.
  3. When we started geocaching we didn't even know there was a premium account until we were going on a road trip and found out about the travel routes option. We have PMO right now and 90% of the caches we find are not premium member caches. But even with that I don't think buying a member ship was a rip off at all! I think we have gotten every nickel dime and penny out of the money we spent and have absolutely no regrets at all. If you don't want to buy the premium don't. You can still do cache's, you can still post your stats using another website in your profile, you have a ton of fun. If you don't want to you do not have to buy it in the slightest. And I do not foresee a revolt coming any time soon, in fact I see a bomb in the amount of geocachers joining the game and loving the game on its way. I just don't think this hobby is for you. But I do suggest you return the geocoin. Someone has paid money for it and would really like to watch it travel from cache to cache. If someone stole from you I do not think you would appreciate it.
  4. Of course they are acceptable and not trash at all! They are signature items, some people even collect them! They basically just say that a person has been there. But if they are all moldy and gross they have to be thrown out. But some of the ones I have seen were really really nice and probably cost the owner a good bit to have them printed up.
  5. When you open the pictures in a Cache listing it tells your right away that they may contain spoilers, from there on it is the persons choice to open it or not. I wouldn't post pictures of where the box is hidden or anything that would bluntly give away the hidding spot but I post pictures of me or Chris with the cache container all the time or with the log, most people do. I don't see a problem with that. But if it is a really tricky hide, something right out in the open. For example we have found a pine cone with a hollowed inside with the log in it hidden in a pine tree, that I wouldn't post a picture of because it would give the whole search away or even if it was something more common like a sprinkler head, I wouldn't either. But if it is a normal lock and lock or a bison tube and the person states what it is in the description than I really don't see why not. ~Sam
  6. Personally I love long descriptions that people put time and effort into. But if it is completely unrelated it is pointless. For example if the description is a short essay written on the town it is hidden in or about the area it is in then that is something I love. If the description is a big hint decoded in a story or something of that sort that is awesome too. I think that shows that people put time and effort into their cache. I dislike the people who complain that more is in the description than just directions to the location of the cache. To me that looks like all they care about is finding it and raising their numbers/stats. If you get to learn something while hunting for a cache thats great. If you are looking to win a competition as to who can find the most the fastest look for another cache. Every single cache is supposed to be placed somewhere important to the person placing it, according to the official geocaching rules. ("When you go to hide a geocache, think of the reason you are bringing people to that spot. If the only reason is for the geocache, then find a better spot." – briansnat; Geocache Listing Requirements / Guidelines; I. PLACEMENT Guidelines: Placement guidelines govern the physical location of a geocache.) Therefore writing a description is awesome! Tell us why you love the area, tell us something about the history or a story about it. But don't ramble on pointlessly. But at the same time caches that are empty in the description, have no details but the location and hint, I find boring. Those are basically for a quick park and grab to raise your stats. You don't learn anything, you just get another smile added to your map. Basically: (To me) Long description that relates to the cache/area/or placement == Great! Long pointless unrelated description == Not a good idea Basic info/ no extra effort into the info about the cache= boring and minimal effort. No offense to anyone who posts empty or simple description caches, I just personally do not enjoy them as much as others. ~Sam
