  1. Anyone producing a coin with copyrighted material is opening themselves up to legal action unless they obtain permission from whoever owns the copyright. When I produced my Bob Dylan coin I signed an agreement with Milton Glaser for the front artwork, but could not reach a deal with Sony for the picture I wanted to use on the back. I ended up creating my own. I have also had to stop using poppies on my Remembrance Day coins because the Royal Canadian Legion owns the copyright on the combination of the poppy and remembrance.

I think for now geocoins have been too much of a niche market with relatively small numbers being produced of any one design for them to be noticed. I have never heard of legal action being taken against a designer. But it would only take one hit on a google search or ebay listing for the right (or wrong) person to take notice.

Thanks for the input, I am just a curious newby.....ABout my name , we were trying to up with something for geocaching...and this became the best vote..ItTakesAThief....didnt know if we should change it or leave it.....

  2. Today, I decided to go after a multi-cache in my area. But when I arrived at the site of the first stage, I looked its info up and discovered that the cache hadn't been found in 1¼ years, meaning it was highly likely to have been muggled. What I consequently propose is that if a cache has not had a "found it" log for a certain period of time depending on its difficulty and terrain ratings, its listing should automatically be disabled and the owner of the cache should be notified that the cache needs to be verified as still in place and ready to be found. I recognize that this idea may be a bit controversial, though.

I have one similar to that nearby only it has not been found in 5 years..But I'm the only that has posted in the last five years..DNF....muggled I presume..

  3. Curious about copyrights on geocoins that have been made, is there a copyright for those popular coins that show tv icons like southpark, star trek etc....

Another question..in name use here on geocaching....my name come from old 70's show, will that be a problem with geocaching.....thanks in advance....

  4. Here is a brief set-up.

Pulled a cache from the website.

Proceeded to park on opposite side of public road not 30 feet from a geocache.

Walked straight to cache, which was in the end of a guardrail. At no time did I or any of the 3 kids I have with me go more than 2 feet from guardrail. In fact we mostly stood in the road while logging.

An angry Male approached us and demanded to know what we were doing there. I calmly explained we were geocaching(kids present) and asked him if he knew what that was.

He was angry that the cache was on his property(guardrail) on side of public road. I explained I was not the owner of the cache nor did I want to argue about whose property a guardrail was on. He told me he would remove the cache. I said that was his business. He then proceeded to throw the cache away into the woods opposite road.

Fast forward about an hour...we were done caching and had to drive by this persons house on a main road(cache was on side road).

Of course he is outside and sees us go by....he jumps on his motorcycle and follows us for about a mile till I stop at a light. He then proceeds to verbally try and start a fight. I pretend I don't know him and Compliment him on his Bike(Honda.lol)

He then tells me I need to watch myself.

At no time did I provoke him mainly because I had kids with me.

My main question is this..Should I have called the police? Would it matter to have reported it?

How should I have handled it...how would most have handled it.

I think you did the right thing, If that is a public road.....he does not own it, it is on county right of way and he is wrong......

  5. I too had similar situation, not so bad though, I had taken my nephew who is 10 years old geocaching a couple weeks ago, out in country on country roads...(I'm a woman of course)and we stopped along roadside..walked across the street, found the cache was signing log when i saw massive dust on road across the street and truck pulling out on the road...young shirtless man got out stood by his truck,,stairing at us the whole time...we walked back to truck, got in , He was still watching beside his truck...I pulled away went ahead and had to turn around, so I just waved as I went by.....(the man glaring)....kinda scary when out in the country...I have no idea who it was.....Nothing was said....by any of us....What the best way to handle these situations when alone.....?????? Have a feeling I stumbled upon someone's weed farm or something..

You did the best thing. Calmly leave the situation before anything escalates. My wife works alone in insurance and is often in seedy areas meeting strangers. I have encouraged her on several occasions to buy some pepper spray for her key chain. Thank goodness geocaching is more about avoiding strangers.

By the way did you hear any dueling banjos?

    Touchee.....

Is there anyway to get Geocaching brochures...to give when these negative situations arise......

  7. ALready have created a design but not sure who to have make them, also not sure whether it should be coin, pathcoin? any ideas, thanks........

It might help to post a picture or two of what you have in mind. Pathtags certainly have limitations, primarily related to size.

Any idea of cost, most of places i've checked just want emails and pictures. I've purchased magnet business size cards with my design will post when they come in....

Not sure how to post the picture here...

  9. Are any of those caches earth caches, mysteries or multies? The saturation guideline only applies to placed physical items (ruling out the need to include earthcaches and multi-waypoints that use pre-existing parts of the environment for their information). Mysteries tend to post a coordinate, but hide the cache a some distance away from those posted coordinates. There is a good chance none violate the guidelines. Any map in particular you're looking at?

They could be multi caches, done by same person....I guess i thought they still had to be over 500 ft away from each other..

  10. Can I replace someone else's missing cache.....There has been no responses from owners as to replacing, can i replace it myself?

    No.

Post a "DNF" if you've looked for it and couldn't find it. You can't assume that it'd missing just because you didn't find it.

It's the cache owner's responsiblity to maintain his/her cache and to check on it periodically.

Don't be throwing down throw-downs, please. That's what you would be doing.

    B.

Thanks for all the responses, pretty much already knew the answer.....your right they should take responsibility for their own caches......
