  1. Just wanted to let everyone know the annual Maryland Geocaching Society Summer Picnic has been scheduled and posted. This is the biggest event we have in Md each year. There will be good food, new caches, games and prizes. This years picnic will be held July 27 at patapsco state park. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=64215 ------------------------------------- Hope is the destination that we seek. 2. I've just placed my old Etrex Venture for sale over on ebay. I recieved a Legend for a Bday gift so I no longer need it. It's posted at http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=34289&item=3017764844&rd=1 I'm not including the data cable, it's for the unit only. I have a buy it now price of 80.00 set. ------------------------------------- Hope is the destination that we seek. Love is the road that leads to hope. Courage is the motor that drives us. 3. I too have a venture minus the data cable I'd be willing to part with. It's in good shape I used it until my Dad got me a Legend for my birthday. I found over 200 caches with it. If anyone is interested I'll let it go for 80.00. ------------------------------------- Hope is the destination that we seek. Love is the road that leads to hope. Courage is the motor that drives us. 4. I just finished the Good Luck cache this week. That one is pretty challenging and requires the heavy use of a compass which is something a little out of the ordinary. The terrain is pretty rough and the hides are well done. I enjoyed hunting that one. ------------------------------------- Hope is the destination that we seek. Love is the road that leads to hope. 5. I have had similar problems on my last two or three outings. I would have a great signal one second and the next I had nothing. I dunno what the deal is, I thought I was just going crazy. ------------------------------------- Hope is the destination that we seek. Love is the road that leads to hope. 6. Thank you for the good laugh! quote:Originally posted by Mr. Snazz:I just had _one dozen_ caches denied that I placed this past weekend. The caches were part of my Highway Drive series. Each cache was an altoid's can, with a three digit number written inside. I tossed the cans at high speed from my car and marked a waypoint, thus increasing the fun of finding. I had anouther cache denied last month, for this one I pained a big red number onto a Llama on my farm, and people had to drive up and find the llama and tell me the number in order to log it. For this other cache, from back in November, I wrote down the serial number of a soccer ball at the local YMCA... Of course, they rejected it! WTF! I almost quit back in March, after they turned down my "How Many Pop Cans Are In Your House" locationless virtual mystery cache. Why does geocaching have to be so strict!??! ------------------------------------- Hope is the destination that we seek. Love is the road that leads to hope. Courage is the motor that drives us. 7. One of yours is actually still one of my favorites and most memorable. Tuckahoe by Sea This is the only one I've done via canoe to date and it was just a ton of fun. This was one of the earlier caches I did but it was one that made me realize just how hooked I was. quote:Originally posted by OUTSID4EVR:I think this would be a good place to recognize the truly great caches in the Northeast. I'm referring to caches that you remember long after you've done dozens of drive-ups. It would be cool to provide a link to the cache you mention, so we can all check it out. Let's show appreciation for those special caches (And hopefully encourage more). I'll start by recognizing the http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=9584. MAJELLIN and I were the last finders of this cache. If you have not tried it, go ahead! Each stage is well planned, and hidden in a creative way. You will do a decent amount of walking to complete the cache. If you're doing it for the numbers, there are some single caches located along the route that you could find as well. We really enjoyed our day at Fair Hill. [This message was edited by OUTSID4EVR on March 06, 2003 at 01:49 PM.] ------------------------------------- Hope is the destination that we seek. 8. I just read an article tonight over at theregister.com about this new scam. http://www.theregister.com/content/6/29615.html ------------------------------------- Hope is the destination that we seek. 9. You guys are missing the point here, this whole thing has gotten way off track and seems to have become a forum for disgruntled cachers to bash the admins. billybob2 stepped way over the line with his attack on moun10bike. This whole issue could have been avoided if he had simply kept his cool and stayed civil with him. Posting his name to these forums for one was way out of bounds! If he had a personal problem with moun10bike he could have emailed Jeremy privately to express his concerns. The admins (myself included) are reasonable people. I think you will find that if you treat us with some civility when coresponding with us you're alot more likley to get positive results. If we have a question about a cache during the approval process don't immediately go on the defensive or attack us. Instead take the time to work with us so we can come up with a solution. Also, why is it that nearly every time I or a fellow admin has a question or concern about a cache we get an inbox full of hate mail? Yet I've never received an email expressing thanks for a quick approval etc... ------------------------------------- Hope is the destination that we seek. Love is the road that leads to hope. 10. Just for the record Jeremey has been the one pushing us as admins to give the locationless caches a fair shake and approve them if they meet the requirements. He's actually defended their merit on many ocassions to some of the harsher locationless critics. I personally think they don't fit as caches however seeking them out is a cool activity in itself. To me a geocache is seeking out a set of coordinates to find some object either a physical cache or virtual. I think developing a seperate system such as what exists for benchmarks is a great idea. If they're seperated out like the benchmarks I'd actually be more apt to hunt them. As it stands now I don't log them because I don't want them in my cache logs and stats. quote:Originally posted by Lazyboy & Mitey Mite:Jeremy you've been negative about locationless since they've started. I enjoy the heck out of them. You are asking for a 2/3 vote here. So what if it's 100% against locationless? Few users actually post here. You won't get 1% of the total cachers voting. You say that the main reason is the backlog of caches awaiting approval. Yet you have lots of people volunteering to help with that. I can't stand multi stage caches. Hate them. So I'm fine with ignoring them. The locationless caches give me something else to do with my gps. It keeps me awake. I find them interesting. I don't care about numbers. I do this for fun. If you are going to drop them then do you have any suggestions where us locationless lovers can go? I hear voices.....and they don't like you! ------------------------------------- Hope is the destination that we seek. Love is the road that leads to hope. Courage is the motor that drives us. 11. We had an issue with our hosting provider which caused Davros and I to spend the majority of the weekend fixing their mistake I'm happy to report the site is back up and running! ------------------------------------- Hope is the destination that we seek. 13. I'd been meaning to do this so when I saw this post I went ahead and switched over myself. Worked no problem When I first signed up as a paying member I hadn't been caching long and wanted to make sure I wasn't going to quickly loose intrest before paying the annual rate. Well 150 + caches later and I'm still hooked so I figured it was safe to pay for a year 30 bux is a bargain for as much as I use this site. ------------------------------------- Hope is the destination that we seek. 14. I just noticed there is a message on the stats page saying stats are down and he is trying to work out the details with geocaching.com. I hope this gets worked out. ------------------------------------- Hope is the destination that we seek. Love is the road that leads to hope. Courage is the motor that drives us. 15. wow you are one pathetic individual hiding behind a newly created account with no finds and no hides which was obviously just created by you in order to hide your identity while causing trouble. You got flamed once by everyone after your first post guess you just didn't get enough. Coward. quote:Originally posted by Geocachman:Why thank you Klause for that warm "stab you in the back" kinda holiday cheer, back at ya with the same wormth and sincerity!!!! Huh....I guess since your 2 cents canceled my 2 cents....well here is 2 more for you. You think you know who I am but you are far from right. But hey if that makes you feel better to blame someone else more power to you. Ok, for starters I never said it was a bad idea to have Marylanders approve caches, just that I didn't think that the MGS should be the chosen ones. I too think that people in the area should do some of the approving! And in response to those of you who have praised the MGS for all of the wonderful work that they have done. Think again!!! Most of the work they've done was to right thier own wrongs. For your information, the reason the parks were going to ban caches was because of the actions of a couple of thier own members. From what I hear I don't even think the members who saved thier butts by getting the parks to talk and getting an approval process in place are even members anymore. I believe the people who did most of the so called hard work quit the group. That should tell you something!! As for the Adopt-A-Cache program, maybe I was a little strong. But you know the old saying, People in glass houses shouldn't throw stones". Well, I think before you concider adopting someone elses cache you should be maintaining you own caches that have been damaged, wet, or unattended for far too long. Just look around at some of thier caches and you will see that that haven't been properly maintained. Maybe someone should adopt your cache!!!!! Thanks for the fun!!!!! 16. Well I planned mine so that I could have my Dad along with me for my 100th cache. Having my pop along on that trip made hitting that first milestone so much cooler. He's since gotten into caching pretty actively and is fast closing in on his 100th. Can't wait to go along for his trek into century teritory. ------------------------------------- Hope is the destination that we seek. Love is the road that leads to hope. 17. I think this is a great topic. If it weren't for the folks out there hiding the caches we wouldn't have anything to hunt It's about time we thanked them. In the maryland area one of if not the most prominent hider has to be klause von kuhn. He's one of the rare bread of cachers that enjoys the hiding more than the finding! He's had me frustrated with some great hides but I continue to enjoy hunting his. Thanks for all the great hides! ------------------------------------- Hope is the destination that we seek. 18. I found the manual that came with my venture to be more than enough to learn how to use the unit. I also did alot of digging around here in the forums and was able to learn alot! ------------------------------------- Hope is the destination that we seek. Love is the road that leads to hope. 19. You should be able to use your gps no problem to navigate with Topo 4.0. I've been using my garmin venture with both the Topo and Street Atlas by Delorme. You should be able to hook it up to your notebook pc and and use the GPS tab to change the settings to match your gps and then use the start gps button. I will say that if you're going to use the topo software to navigate while driving you'll probaly be disapointed. I've found that topo lacks alot in the way of street detail. I usually use Street Atlas road warrior addition for driving. ------------------------------------- Hope is the destination that we seek. Love is the road that leads to hope. 20. quote:Originally posted by Geocachman:Well folks, guess what! There is a new sheriff in town and it is the self-promoting arrogant Maryland Geocaching Society. According to their website they will be snatching up caches if they haven't been maintained properly or (in their opinion) abandoned. If they think it has been abandoned they will "adopt it" under the societies name. I hope they don't forget that what goes around comes around, like their caches are the perfectly maintained caches. One might think...Well, you know.... I really like the location of that there cache I visited last week, I think I'll claim jump it! Hey folk's, its open season, pick a cache and put your name on it, what better way to add to you inventory. What the heck is Geocahing.com thinking, giving them the authority to approve caches? Any wonder why most of the caches approved lately is from them...huh! And what in the world is it with all of these so-called micro or mini caches that they are saturating the parks with. What? You can't hide real caches like big boys? Who you going copy off of next? Boy this is fun!!!! You know, although I just registered with Geocaching.com, I have been lurking for several months. I have even gone out on the hunt several times with friends. I just thought it was time to add my two cents worth. Just my opinion folks!!!! The Geocachman George Geocachman@yahoo.com [This message was edited by Geocachman on December 20, 2002 at 02:36 PM.] What is your problem? The MGS is in no way "snatching" up caches. We as a club have adopted only one cache to date which had been abandoned and was in very poor shape. This also happened to be the oldest cache in the state that was active so we decided it was worth saving! The placer hadn't visited this site in months and their email addy was no longer working. If they would ever like to step up and reclain that cache they are more than welcome to. We do have a forum on our website for Md cachers to let others know when a cache needs some attention. There is no intention to adopt all these caches, only the hope that the next person who hunts it might be able to take the time to do a quick repair job, ie. replace a cracked container, add a new log book. As davros stated if you have questions and would like to get your facts straight feel free to email us before posting more unwarranted and sensless messages to the forums. ------------------------------------- Hope is the destination that we seek. 23. I couldn't agree more. I for one learned alot when getting started by following all the "Markwell'd" threads. I think if done and taken the right way they can actually add historical perspective and detail to a thread. ------------------------------------- Hope is the destination that we seek. 24. I doubt that would be allowed, allowing asp code in the cache pages would be just one huge security hole. ------------------------------------- Hope is the destination that we seek. 25. I hook my Venture up to my laptop and use it with Delorme Street Atlas to help me navigate to the cache area. It's really helped me out a few times! Only problem is I need to get a power inverter as my notebook pc sucks the battery down pretty darn fast. ------------------------------------- Hope is the destination that we seek.
