Speaking of map software... Are there any significant DATA differences between MapSend Topo 3D USA v1.0 (on CD) and v1.5 (on DVD). From what I've been able to read online, they changed the distribution media (CD to DVD) and the copy protection scheme - but did M. change the street map data? Can find v1.0 on eBay a lot easier/cheaper than 1.5 I may have an extra set of mapsend software, if you're interested. Will have to check. Will aslo check which version it is. Would be happy to know if there is a significat difference between the two version in the way of street/topographic data.

Hmmm... Looks like we had pretty much the same question, no? How difficult is it to update the firmware on these older models?

Haven't been on the forums for a while and just noticed this thread. Castilleja indivisa Engelm. Beautiful in the wild. The coin really does it justice. Nice work.

I am curious as to how people feel about cachers holding their own personal coins, ones that they have purchased, and only logging them in to event caches so that others could "find" them and log them. Then the cacher logs them out of that event cache and holds them until another event cache. I seem to have seen this done, or perhaps I am wrong. I noticed it with one event I attended in which a couple of people logged a number of coins each and then were showing them to each other at the event. Is this a "standard" sort of thing to do? biosearch

I had an Explorist 210, it died on me. I have been looking on eBay and have found a 400 that is running at a decent price. It is brand new. I have looked at the GPS Store on the net and they do not carry the 400. Is this a discontinued unit? Did they have problems with it? Does anyone out there have one and can tell me what their experience with the unit is? Any insight would be appreciated. biosearch

You give your palm a hotsync name when you first go to hotsync it. You can either create one after you hit the hotsync or you can open palm desktop, go up to the right hand corner and click on the down arrow in the "user" box and then scroll down to edit user names. Then go from there either renaming, editing, creating a new, etc. On a side note, the m100s, being so inexpensive, are great for geocaching. I went a little further and got an m125. Couldn't cache without it now. If this doesn't help let me know and I'll see if I can't walk you through it. And if I can help out in any other way just let me know.... biosearch

Try an m130, an m125 if you don't want color. Both take a Sandisk card so memory is not an issue. Scandisks now run 128mb. There is an m130 on ebay at item number 150102586437. When I posted this it had 19 hours left and was at 15 bucks. I use an m125 and am very happy with it. I have some m100s and m105s laying around the house. I bid a dollar on them and if I win them I win them, if not then I don't worry about it. It is great for the kids, I load books on them from the Gutenberg Project (http://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/Main_Page) another great free thing on the web....

Very Nice...Do you have the link for the cache site? I'm guessing that this one will make it up until the first CITO event in the area ... -
which PDA for paperless. Palm iiixe or m 500?
biosearch replied to Outback2970's topic in General geocaching topics
I'm using an old m125 that I purchased off of eBay for cheap. There is one on there at the present time for $5.00 with the works (item number 270099712401). I'm sure it will go up from there but it won't be much more. And the m125 takes a scandisk card, that is an additional 128mb and you can carry additional cards with you if you really, really want to put more on the palm. I'm happy with mine. The m125 is black and white, the m130 is color. -

You can "enter" a poi in any type of GPS without software. If by enter you mean mark a location or enter coordinates to create a waypoint/poi. If you are using a garmin take a look at "edit waypoint" in the garmin eTrex manual it is on page 15. If you have a Magellan, depending upon the model, all you should have to do is depress "mark" and when you get the waymark screen simply change the coord. Now if you are talking about uploading large files of poi's/waypoints, that is a different story altogether.

Work in a bio dept at a local university. We biologists have a tendency to like to put together words to make other ones. So bio being life and my constant search for it lead to biosearch. Of course it was a spur of the moment thing and the more I think about it I would probably choose something else at this point, but....

Am wondering if anyone else has run across the TopoShare.org site and if so have they tried using any of the routes there to create a cache along a route query. Should work without a problem, but am curious if there are others that have used it...

How do I get started with paperless Geocaching?
biosearch replied to Always & Forever 5's topic in GPS technology and devices
Yep, same thing. I purchased an M125 Palm on eBay for a couple of bucks. I've been picking up 100 series palms for anywhere from 0.99 to 12.00 (everyone in my family now has one, even my 11 year old). These m100s work beautifully for caching, and other things too. This one (ebay item number) 270095259279 is at 0.99 cents right now and includes the docking cradle. This one is an m100 and only has 3mb of memory. The m105 has 8mb and the m125 has 8mb but includes a memory card slot, allowing you to add additional memory. There is an m125 on eBay (230099341582) right now with ten hours left and it is sitting at 11.25 right now. It is brand new in the box. Insure you purchase one with a docking cradle, it will be nearly useless without one, some on eBay don't have them. These are really decent units and the cost is unbeatable, especially since they cost in the neighborhood of $150.00 new. Palm software can be downloaded from the Palm website, so if the palm does not come with software don't sweat it. Cachemate is the program to have for geocaching. You can download a trial version that allows you to load five caches, but the $8.00 is nothing to pay and you can load as many caches as your palm will hold. Just use your pocket queries. Cachemate holds, descriptions, hints, last five logs and a page to log your visit. A couple of other thing that I can't remember right now. If you need any help when you get one, or if you're still curious and have questions I would be more than happy to see if I can help. -
I'm in the process of planning a trip for mid April of this year. Haven't really gotten full into the planning, but am working on it. We want to camp as a family in a relatively nice, preferably National or State, park with recreational facilities and scenic views if possible. I'm looking for some that are near some nice caches, preferably ones that include day hikes to get to them and give you something worthwhile to see. Have been thinking of Yahoo Falls since I live in Western Kentucky, but thought I would ask for suggestions. Am probably looking at KY, TN, NC, SC and possibly GA. Thanks for any input and suggestions....

This doesn't fit the "rock" theme, but, for one of the three (yes a whole three) caches I have out I made a mini ghillie suit for the ammo can. From a few feet away it simply blends in. The cloth is attached to the handle so it won't be left off when cachers replace the container. I've got another one made for another cache that I have in the works. I made these with old burlap sandbags, the same way that we made them in the military. Plan to check back on that one cache periodically, but so far it seems to be holding up.

What good is paperless without maps?
biosearch replied to spikerek's topic in General geocaching topics
I have my maps loaded on the GPS (Mapsend Topo 3D), so that takes care of the maps. If I manage to get outside of the detailed maps that I have loaded on the gps I simply rely on the base maps and do a bit more driving and turning down wrong roads (drives the wife, who drives, nuts, but heh, everything I do does...). I purchased an older pda off of eBay for about twenty bucks including shipping. Cachemate loads a lot of stuff. You get the location data, description, hints, last five logs, a place to log the cache and an overview screen. Lets say you our out, perhaps took a drive to visit a relative, and as usual your relative told you they would be in and arn't. So why waste the trip. I can pull out my gps, see what caches are in the area, open the pda and get all of the information for that cache. Don't need to go back to the computer, etc. The log feature allows you to log start time, end time, what you took, what you left, TB's, etc. You can organize the caches by found, not found, owned, cache type, etc. And all of this can be loaded from your queries. And you can help save a tree by saving the paper. Costs less in the long run. Right now I have about 1,200 caches loaded on my pda and am planning on putting more on there, just in case I happen to be a couple of hundred miles away from home all of a sudden. I take mine everywhere. And besides, pda's can be used for other things (date book, calendar, notepad, shopping lists, holiday schedules....) I'm winning one right now for $11.50 right now. It is an older one with very small amount of memory, but they work fine for caching. If I win it and your interested I'll toss this one your way for what it cost me and a buck or two for shipping. Total of about $12.00. Then you can try it and see if it is worth it for you. I think that you would be well served by using a pda. -
I would like to thank everyone that has applied to this post. I can now print it out, hand it to my wife and say "See, I'm not spending a fraction of the money that I could...). Perhaps $200.00 on the GPS and maps (210 Outdoor Bundle), a $20.00 older palm from e-bay, $8.00 for cachemate, $30.00 membership and some gas. Nowhere near what I could have paid. Everything else I already had, computer, ammo cans, decon containers, rope, climbing equipment, outdoor equipment (hiking, etc.), rechargeable batteries (couldn't live without them)... So all total for caching I've spent $258.00 Expect to spend more in the future...

Same here, as of 11:09 pm. This seems to be happening a lot lately. If the server is busy, and we are paying for the service, I think that they ought to be able to fix the problem. One would think...

Isonzo Karst... Thanks for the pointers on pq's. I created on a day or so ago but didn't put the ideas that you had into it. Will go back and modify it. It took me awhile (duh) to figure out that I could create more specific/detailed searches using pocket queries, even if I don't run them automatically and only use them with the preview option. One of the main benefits of paid membership. Airmapper... I soooooo wanted the ftf on that cache. I made two trips out there to try and get it. Was sweating that one for awhile, but I got it. I saw your log, I've got more than enough gear to get you over the edge to pick that one up. Let me know if you're interested. X-isle... Yes preservation is a major issue in my book. As for grit, after twelve years in the military, three of which were in a Ranger Bn, "this ain't no thang atall".

I just got Drop in at Shanty Hollow yesterday, am getting ready to do Plunge Extreme in the next month or two. Really Shanty Hollow was practice for the Plunge. I assume by your name that you are into caving, or you study caves, or... I'm here at Western Ky Univ. big Karst and Cave Studies/Research center here. Makes sense with what we have in the area. I'll try some of those searches. Do some just for a 5 terrain, that is more of what I am looking for than the difficulty. Thanks, anyone have any other ideas I'd be more than happy to hear from them...

I'm sure that this has been covered before, but I'm looking for any one of the following. A method do search for caches by difficulty rating, looking for all 5/5s A list of all 5/5 rated caches. A method to search for or a list of all caches that require climbing or caving. Anyone have any ideas? Rhank Roo, biosearch

Magellan 210 Outdoor bundle. It comes with the maps, which can cause what the bundle costs all by themselves. You can download Groundspeak queries. Geocaching points are separate files from the poi files. Geocaching files contain pertinent information about the caches. The thing is basically made for geocaching. Oh, and it comes with a case if you get the bundle. Have gotten very good accuracy, spectacular for the size and cost of the unit. My two cents.

Hey, that's pretty good, do you give classes? Seriously, it is as easy as that, isn't it. And then choosing the file under preferences, active setup, geocaches...
