  1. Can be done. You would need to put it into the garmin first and turn it on to get the file names, take it out and then put it into your reader and then transfer your files into the GPX folder.
  2. If it were me I would go for the GPSMAP® 62St and spend the money saved on some decent maps. Review here with people in the comments section who have taken it out in the real world: http://www.geek.com/review/review-garmin-gpsmap-62-handheld-gps-device-1274566/
  3. Using a garmin 450. Two PQ's, one titled "home" with 500 and "Include Pocket Query name in download file name" checked. Garmin didn't see any of the geocashes, ran it again with 1000 and re-named it "new home" and checked the box again and re-ran PQ. (larger)File was still named "home" when I downloaded it and still had the same number and still didn't show up. Ran it once more with 1000, a new name; "workdamnyou" and include name unchecked and all the cashes showed up on the garmin. No idea why the last one worked when the second one didn't because they were identical in all but name.
  4. My children use a touch screen Oregon 450, (level 10 autism, so the higher end model is justified and it's been one of those I don't know how I went anywhere without him being able to see where we are going before we got this things) mostly when we are cashing they look at the list and I tell them where to set it to and then they go to compass. If that sounds right to you then the cheaper version of the touch screen 450 (£185) would be the touch screen garmin dakota 10 (£95) it does take talkytoasters free maps, you just get less colours and the pretty on the maps, a compass is a compass. I would say that there is not enough of a price difference between the Dakota 20 or Etrex 20 and the newer models really, you are going to look at them and think "for another £20 I could have got so many more features" and regret it. On the subject of compass my bloody expensive samap 10 has 2 axis, but that's because it's been around for a long time now, I don't actually notice the difference between and 3 axis because 30 years of muscle memory makes me hold both flat like I would a normal compass anyway.
  5. Groundspeak *really* need to sort out the fine print on this, why would someone in say, Germany have to pay UK VAT? Our UK trading standards laws are harsh, you absolutely can not say it's for VAT if it's over 20% here, you can say additional charges though, which does pose the question why are we paying additional charges when people paying in $ are not. I don't think this is a scam, I think this is someone not thinking this through. Let us decide if we want to pay conversion fees, as it happens it's not going to make any difference when it comes to the UK as, as I said, we don't have the Euro so it will be converted anyway. Europe have been burned hard by this practice of just swapping the $ over to £ or E, gaming companies do it to us all the time (worst example was Rock band that went $199 to £199) and I can safely say that everyone here is sick to the back teeth of hearing excuses about "shipping costs" and "VAT" over it.
  6. I do wish he had chosen to say something other than learning curve.
  7. Sorry, this is "orks speech". Do the things right or wrong - we all make mistakes. But be honest and don´t try to fool the people, on which you depent...we will thank you for this - don´t worry. Der Zappo I'm not going to lie, I'll still be premium. I don't mind paying the extra if the yanks have a £1.44 rise as well, if they don't I may grumble a bit on facebook about it. However the UK does not have the Euro, in fact we don't even have the symbol on our keyboards. The line about currency conversions does not work for us as we would be charged just the same as if it was £ to $. It's also not the most stable of currencies to be converting into so if you wouldn't mind awfully we would rather stick to our own £s which have never had a price set. Also setting it to the correct 20% vat would also be nice, £1.44 will buy me half a pint. edit: or £1.44 could go to charity, I suspect 90% of the complaints would stop if the extra you are collecting were to go to cancer research, everyone hates cancer.
  8. Now I can only think of borrowers. I'm afraid it's certainly thieves. I decided to finally do the ones near the centre of town but this time with a pen so I could log, went to the one near the police station and was absolutely at the correct place but no nano, at first I thought it was workmaned but then I went to the bus station and the cashe owner came out and told me he had seen the one there being taken. I then went to check on the other nanos and found the one in the market gone but the church nano was still there. I've logged maintenance needed on all (I say all, the centre of chesterfield is quite Spartan anyway now) and the church micro is going premium for a bit. I fear I am afflicted with hope for humanity, it's a curse if you don't still have it, and am hoping that either someone was being kind and decided to renew logs or the person/persons who did it realise that young kids do this hobby and feel guilty enough to put them back.
  9. http://www.ukgeocachers.co.uk/catalog/Trackable-Tag-Replacement.html will do you a copy of your tag for a couple of pounds.
  10. 3 stolen this morning, little scrotes. Would suggest owners go premium on the ones around town for a few days till they get bored.
  11. We are all waiting on the new Oregon 600 in a month or so so don't buy a 550, the 450 is the best value gps right now as since the announcement the prices have globally bombed amazon warehouse deals $205 - $210
  12. In the UK we are taught "look but don't touch" I can see how there might be a problem with hiding a cashe in a place where stalagmites/stalactites could be accidentally broken during the search for it could be a problem, but that's a placement not a location issue. It's staggering to me that you have your caves blocked off and hidden for a select few, over here the big ones are tourist destinations and the little ones are just despised by mountain rescue (any blocked ones will be blocked because they are unsafe). I can understand fears about vandals, although it must be quite a determined vandal if a cave is 10 miles away from the nearest road, but a CCTV camera would be far less damaging to the rocks than metal gates, but unfortunately although the law is an a** it's still the law - although if you are giving coordinates to a cashe and not the cave then there's your loophole. edit: just remembered, environmentalists in the UK don't like gates because of the negative impact on bats
  13. I think what you are after is Motion X GPS which also turns your phone into a full on gps device. However it does cost a small amount of money.
  14. Come now chaps and ladies who are complaining, this isn't an exclusive thing to this site, many many things on the internet have a premium/gold/platinum membership which have little rewards for people who have paid. This is a incredibly high traffic site which also has files that are free to download but not for geocashing.com to host, it's a nice thing for premium members to have a few bonus cashes along with "how did I do this before" pocket queries. Common sense dictates that there should be a real solid reason for all the cashes in an area to be premium only, I would imagine that 99.9% of the time it's because of annoying teenagers who think they are "trolls lol" and destroy any they can find for example. In this case it's not really fair to ask people to spend the time and money out of their own pocket to replace cashe after cashe when you could just chip in and pay your 30 a year.
  15. I apologise if this has been asked before but which of these fabulous maps are best for off road routing? Edit because it seems like a very odd question: I just bought a 450 for my daughter and can't get hold of a micro SD card till Monday so can only install one of talkytoaster's maps for our hike on Sunday.
  16. IMHO.... that is being naive. It is one thing to volunteer to adopt a cache and another to ask to take one over. In the first instance the CO is indicating that they can not maintain their cache for one reason or another so they would like someone to have it. In the other case, to me, it comes across as "Hey you've got a neat spot and I'd like to have it." Uh No. Depends how polite/British you are in the mail, I can't see offence been taken to "excuse the intrusion but I would like to set up a cashe in X area but the distance rule would put it too close to a couple of yours, would you mind if I took over one of your spots? Any suggestions as to an alternate location would also be greatly appreciated, thank you for taking the time to read this mail"
  17. Wouldn't having some sort of cashe limit be a more sensible solution if people's problem is that someone else is hogging an area. Something like your non-series cashes have to be one mile apart, thus allowing someone else ample opportunity to find a good spot between the two.
  18. Am I being very naive in suggesting that people drop the prolific casher a line and asking if you can take over one of their spots? You could sweeten the deal with a geocoin as a thank you or something.
  19. The ap is definitely worth it premium or not Lieblweb nailed the reasons. However, having the pocket query feature even for one month so you can batch download and save the cashes and maps you need to your phone makes it a hell of a lot easier to use in offline mode as smartphones are at the mercy of 3g signals. Keep your old gps with you as well as I have found your position can be quite skittish with the iPhone at times and although it will get you to the right area all of the time you often need a second unit's compass to find the cashe, my 5 only has to see a tree and it gets itself into a bit of a panic.
  20. I find the iPhone 5 to be a royal pain in the arse at times, the official ap works flawlessly if you have a 3g signal but it all gets clunky in offline mode, but a decent solid GPS just gets you there. I find that in the middle of nowhere saving your cashes to the phone and then using a stand alone GPS works much better, you don't have to have a £400 unit, putting in the coordinates and following the compass on a basic one will work just as well with saved Motion x maps.
  21. First walk went on today, there are two walks from this one bus stop, this first part is 2- 3 hours of cashing for a family and it ends at a pub. Get the 272 bus from D4 stand at the Sheffield bus station, it's the one next to the seating area for a cafe, which is nice. Timetable http://www.travelsouthyorkshire.com/timetables/sheffield/796.htm You get off at the surprise view bus stop, it's actually next to a car park to your right in between the fox house and the actual surprise view. Coordinates are 53 19'01" N 1 37' 25" W It's not a particularly steep walk but the paths are rather rocky as are the cashe areas, I wouldn't want to do this in the wet (again) with the family. premium http://coord.info/GCHAMY http://coord.info/GC30YBT optional - http://coord.info/GCQ0J5 http://coord.info/GC1CMM0 http://coord.info/GC1HZ3F The millstone pub where there is a Puzzle cashe http://coord.info/GCR0EQ
  22. Thanks for the replies, that's just the bus timetable I was looking for Capt. @thehoomer Don't worry I'm not in over my head here, geocashing is just a extension on something I do already - I've been hiking all over the peak district and various ways for about 25 years and have unknowingly walked past hundreds upon hundreds of cashes already many of them level 4s and a few level 5s and a lot of what I am about to embark on is just going back to areas I've been to before, the difference will be using a gps instead of map or memory. It's the gpx files for walks I will be creating not the cashes themselves as I will be going from area to area before moving on and won't be able to to maintenance. Saying that there are a few gaps around Hathersage that could be closed, I may get my father to look after a couple on his daily dog walking route. Hopefully if I show how easy public transport can be more people will get out into the countryside, seasoned public transport veterans will know that once you accept a slower pace of life then the journey becomes part of the trip as a whole, it's about acceptance and remembering to bring a book. I fear you can't smoke on buses any more, the bus driver is legally allowed to have you taken out and shot for it.
  23. Another one from the same place. Tapton house in black and white by Learnin' Curve, on Flickr
  24. I hadn't heard of this one. Double checking and it's different, the stagecoach explorer is a bigger area but stagecoach bus/tram only, It's worth it if you are going to or from Sheffield. It it should be noted that it's the cheapest day pass if you have children as the explorer/explorer+ tickets don't have a child's fare wherever you are. The wayfarer is only valid within Derbyshire and has the disclaimer "Travel between Derbyshire and Sheffield*, Burton-on-Trent*, Macclesfield*, Leek* and Uttoxeter* is also included. * Town/city centre (valid on direct journeys to/from Derbyshire only)." . It's all a big mess really *does more digging* Lines it's valid on. Buxton - Chapel-en-le-Frith - New Mills (Newtown) Sheffield - Hathersage - Hope - Edale - Chinley - New Mills (Central) Sheffield - Chesterfield - Alfreton - Langley Mill Sheffield - Chesterfield - Derby Derby - Belper - Ambergate - Cromford - Matlock Derby - Long Eaton Derby - Tutbury and Hatton - Uttoxeter Derby - Willington - Burton-on-Trent Shirebrook - Whitwell Trying to work out how the hell one would actually get to Macclesfield on the train using this ticket, you would have to go to new mills and then walk to the other station or get a bus, however if you have a friends and family rail card it has the potential to add many hours onto your travelling time. It does work out as cheaper in a lot of cases especially if you are in a family group (in my case it's 2 children and a dog) and I'll factor this ticket in to the costs and public transport details when I make lists. First trip is being planned, there is a nice circle of cashes from surprise view near Hathersage and Grindlford, getting both the train to grindlford or the 272 bus from sheffield will put you at either end of it but the bus is a better option as there is a multi if you go clockwise.
