I also cache alone but take a dog with me whenever I go. The only time I've really been in trouble was when my husband was with me. We were caching at a county park near our home when we came across a dog owner with 6 large dogs. Fortunately my husband was carrying an ammo can which he was in the process of swinging to hit the first dog when the owner called them all back. The second time we were close enough to get to the car to avoid being attacked. My dog makes me feel secure but I still carry a cellphone and keep in contact with my husband at regular times. He also knows where I'm caching so he can help if needed.

As you say there are two ways to ask about your coin that might by in someone else's hands for over a normal period of time. Recently we received an email from an cacher in Oregon that thought we had his coin (however we did not). This cacher counted all the caches that we had visited since we picked up his coin. He didn't take into account the fact that several of these caches were micros. (We have yet to figure out how to put a coin in a micro). What do you consider an appropriate time frame and have you consider that the cacher might have fallen ill , bad weather has set in or had a death in the family????

Most of the Walmart should have them with the rest of the plastic containers in the kitchen section. We also use the lock and lock containers along with the ammo cans and decon boxes. We've in Iowa and they would just fine for us as long as they get shut correct.

We have a couple left and none of them have gaskets. We can't remember ever seeing any gaskets in them either. The lids fit so tight that there is no need for a gasket. Fill your's with something heavy, put it in a bucket of water and see what happens. I'll bet if you get the lid on tight it will not leak. Check it out and see.

We just replaced a cache today that was found by a muggle, at least we are assuming it was a muggle. The container was still in the spot we hid it but the swag and log was gone. The muggle did leave us one present, an empty beer can. (Wish it had been full !!) Anyway, sorry about the container, don't give up hope and try it again.

Up to this point we've always been able to get those pesky logs out of the case. BUT...yesterday while doing a owner maintenance run on several caches in a rural county park, we found that one of our magnetic containers that we thought we had taken the necessary precautions to prevent it from getting pushed back too far, was in fact, pushed way too far back. MrRing took the extra windshield wiper that I had in the back of the Jeep and bent it up to make a hook on the end. We will now be carrying something that will have an extending handle on it. We've learned our lesson!!!

We just started caching last year and we've having a blast with it. When geocachers moved in next door from another state we've been in a FTF race. There is nothing quite like the thrill of being the first to get there and the first to sign that logbook. We don't have any special equipment and really don't think we need it. We do log onto the website a few times a day just to see what is new. It's all about the thrill of the hunt.

I'm sure someone else has already asked this question but I can't find where it is or an answer to my problem. I was hoping to have someone help me here. I know I'm going to try and include the non-caching public to our event in the spring. My conservation officer wants it that way and I can't see why not. I know for myself, it would not bother me a bit to have someone tag along to find a couple of caches. They just might spot it quicker than me and that wouldn't bother me a bit. GO FOR IT !!!

Since when is it HER job to clean the house when HE was the one that trashed it in the first place. Anyway, since I'm the female 1/2 of this team - I GO CACHING !! I also keep most of my gear handy, depending on the temperature outside. Since I work nights in Iowa, it's supposed to be cold out now, I don't want my GPSr sitting in the freezing cold so sometimes I have to go back home and get it. My husband likes to go caching also but I'm the one that seems to take off and go alone when he is working and I'm supposed to be taking care of the home front. So, go caching and don't worry about it.

We have a rat terrior that we take almost everywhere with us. He loves to go. When I go out with mr. ring I feel a lot more comfortable with a dog along for company. (I'm considering carrying pepper spray also but that's another subject.) Buddy and I like to do the longer walks so I use the back track feature on my GPSr but most of the time I don't have to worry about even looking at it since Buddy usually takes us back to the car with no problem. We take one of those walk/bowl contraptions that we bought at Petco. I like the kind that hangs from my belt. I also take treats and dog food is in the jeep for when we need it. Usually my dog won't eat till we get back home but he will take treats. We started taking the dog with us for fun but out vet says it is doing wonders for his weight problem. He loves to go for walks and caching is adding to our walking time. Take the dog for protection and companionship.

Hey - another cacher just like us. We'll work an area till we have it done and then if a new cache shows up we run back and get it. Sometimes we'll drive 75 miles to get into an area that has 15 or more caches, and cache along the way of course. Our neighbors (fellow cachers just moved in from Oregon) think we need a 12-step program. They even challenged us to see who could reach 200 first. Naturally after we spent the weekend in Cedar Rapids with my sister, coming home with 42, we won!! (The prize was supper in the restaurant of our choice.) We've taken up to 25 caches in one day, midnight to midnight. We've in it for the fun so we'll go wherever to continue the adventure. Stay happy and keep caching.

We have 28 caches within 5 miles of my zip code, 10 of these we hid. If you really care about caching, as an owner or a hunter, then you're doing it right BUT if you don't care (owners that leave their caches and don't check on them, even after negative comments) then you are littering. Ultimately it's up to the owner to keep their cache in shape BUT as hunters we can help to keep the tradition going by CITO. Caching or Littering - you have decide for yourself how you want to play the game.

We have fixed a couple of caches and then tried to contact the owner. One, as it turns out, had passed on without anyone in the geocaching community knowing about it. So we felt really good about that fix. (Her caches were put up for adoption and we were given the adoption on the one that we fixed.) The other owner has not responded and is still hiding caches. They are active according to their profile and still hiding in questionable containers. (Light weight plastic that will not last the winter.) We'll do what we can to fix containers if possible or contact our reviewer to intervene. Happy Caching in the New Year.

It would be nice to have a feature to be able to log your caches along a route without have to look up each one but we definitely would not like to have a standard response for each find. We really like to personalize each response and we like to read the previous logs to get hints as to what others have found/seen. Just my opinion and you know what they say about opinions. HA!

After talking in great length to our local Conservation Officer we've decided to have an event possibly in the spring at the County Conservation Area. We might hide up to 10 temporary caches to be found during the day but we'd like to have guest speakers and experienced cachers speak. One of the guest speakers will be the conservation officer himself. One topic he would like to talk about that we hadn't thought about it then transfer of unsavory plants from area to area. (Have you ever thought about it?? What unsavory plant seeds could be hanging on your pants?) We are also talking using C.O.'s monthly advertising space in the local paper to interest new people in the area. Our C.O. says he can get 20 GPSr from the state to use during an event. Anyway, we're not sure how well it will be over but it is worth a try.

We started a couple of months ago. Hubby works days, I work non-traditional second shift (and go to college) at the same place. The only time we have together is the weekend. Once we started geocaching we started planning the weekends in advance, geocaching of course. Since we started, 208 finds/18 hides, we've become addicted. (Our neighbors, that just moved in from Oregon that also cache, think we need a 12-step program. HA!HA!) I've started a TB in appreciation of my sister from Oregon who introduced us to geocaching. I've in turn gotten another sister started. I spend at least an hour a day during the week and several hours on the weekend looking for new caches or areas to hit. We've done all the local caches within 30 miles and working on the rest within 50 miles. We are having fun and enjoying the time that we are spending together. That's what marriage is all about. We were in your shoes when we started. I didn't really want to go tramping around in the woods without knowing where I was going and being able to get back to where we parked. We were picky about the first few caches till I went to a class about 150 miles away from home. The experienced people there were very, very helpful, especially my trainer. After that we were hooked and started looking for everything we could find in and away from our home area. I'll go anywhere in the state of Iowa now. Have fun with it. Read the cache page and logs to decide whether you think it would be too far out. Look at it from an aerial view to see "how far" you will have to walk. You never know how much fun you might be missing out on. mrring

almost 5:00am in the midwest - it was done - then it was up for 10 minutes - now it is down again Is there any end in sight???

It has been very slow or not at all for some of us in the Midwest. It is 4:15 in the AM and I can't get into the website. I tried at work just before I left at 3:00am with no results there either. I saw the "slow/busy server" message on the 19th, are you still having the same problems??? mrring
