GeoCaching the Mexican Border Obelisk Monuments
TeamBarstool replied to ChinaCash's topic in West and Southwest
Chuy! this is fabulous and solves a big problem. One hitch is that the Border Patrol (see list at Post #14) uses coordinates based upon US topgraphic maps. This can put you sigificantly off using the GPS coordinates we all know and love. I know there is a conversion factor available on the JEEP site at: http://jeeep.com/details/coord/ I have been contacted today by a jounalist from the National Geographic. It sounds like she want to do a geo-caching story that might include the Border Obelisk angle. I've offered the services of you fine fellows if she wishes to have an escort into the, sometimes dangerous, border regions. Stay tuned... I think She probably contacted everyone on the thread. I offered to make the trip also. after Chuy! posted I tried this google site search: BOUNDARY MON site:http://www.geocaching.com/mark This brings up some. Need to tweak the key words to bring up some others -
Noob on a MAC. Which GPS should I buy?
TeamBarstool replied to INVID's topic in GPS technology and devices
you have a link to Geotoad on your page. I would not recommend as it violates the Groundspeak terms of use -
We will probably have one Monday. We are leaving in 20 minutes to go to here. it's been raining for a couple of days but is supposed to be nice on Sunday.

cool. I just adopted a 6 year old cache. have the current owner go here good luck

I saw a link on your sight to a program called Geotoad. I'd be careful about using it. It looks to me like it violates Groundspeak TOU. I might be wrong, but it looks like a scraper to me.

Here are some threads: link link link I've thought about the used laptop route. I'm stuck with windoze at work and really don't want to bring it into my house.

Software for Mac - maps or software for free?
TeamBarstool replied to thorlin's topic in GPS technology and devices
Since the promised Mac support has not arrived from Garmin, I purchased one of their preprogrammed data cards. The TOPO works great for the caching I like to do. It also covers most of the roads in town but will not auto route. I haven't messed with Loadmytracks at all. I think you can create routes that you can then can load in with GPSBabel. I imagine that you can do the same with a Google .KML file. I don't load routes into my GPSr, but I'll probably play with it this weekend. I'm always looking for suggestions on how to make the Mac / GPSr combo easier to use. The set up I've been using has been working well for me Just don't ask me to put windoze on a perfectly good computer . -
Software for Mac - maps or software for free?
TeamBarstool replied to thorlin's topic in GPS technology and devices
I bought the TOPO card for my region. I use GPSBabel to export to my 60cx. I run cachemate on a palm zire21 and use macCMConvert to load the palm. this Link might help you as well as these linky linky linky edit to add a few more links -

If anyone wants to get a group to document the ones in Arizona, I'm in. I would also be into some trips to New Mexico as well. Finding monuments, caches & benchmarks along the line sounds like a blast to me. Have 4wd , will travel Jeff TeamBarstool@mac.com -
Common Misconceptions That Lead to ANGST!
TeamBarstool replied to Snoogans's topic in General geocaching topics
but...but... they work just fine here in the desert. lets just all get behind the banning of gladware. -
ok... I'll go with this. Did the 1st stage contain the coords for the 2nd and final stage? Was the reviewer given the multiple waypoints? I'm just trying to figure out how it was listed as a multi and if it could really work as one? Thanks The container's log book held the clue to the location of the second... the second held the waypoint to the final. Yes the reviewer had the coords... thank you for the reply

After slogging through all 5 pages of this I've decided that I don't like the idea of liars caches. But thats just me. Maybe I just missed it and maybe some helpful person can clear up my main point of confusion. Why did a reviewer allow a single stage cache to be listed as a multi? Is this done often? I haven't seen it yet around here. I hope not to. I think the ratings and the cache type should match reality.I would think if you are going to create a liars cache,at least those 2 items on the page should be correct. jeff barstool
