  2. Just curious as to how many of you wear your geocache shirts and hats while on the search. If you do, have you noticed it brings up conversations from passerbys? I have never noticed anyone along the trail wearing a CITO shirt or geo cap or anything else. I did see a car once that had a geocache sticker on the back. I have a GEO sticker on my car which was noticed by some of my employees. This is just idle Sunday night curiosity.
  3. Thanks for the info! From the info I have gotten here, I think I'll stick with the Magellan. I have been playing with it in my apartment, it seems to do most all my Garmin does, plus a little more. I guess I'll stick my Garmin on Ebay this week. I'll take the funds from that and invest in my metal detector fund. I have a passion for toys. It seems like they would go hand in hand pretty well. I was at one cache that was located in what looked like an OLD home site. I wonder what I could pick up there. Now with an overstuffed pack, GPSr, hiking staff, camera, and metal detector, I may need a caddy...
  4. Oops, is my face red or what? Should read 'young'. You did bring up some good points, Prime Suspect. I'll probably be up all night wondering about these questions! Hmmm....
  5. New person? I guess you are never too you to start cacheing. What were you before? Sorry, I have an offbeat sense of humor and the topic line caught my attention. I couldn't resist.
  6. Hi All. I have a Garmin Venture which I have been using for about a year now. I saw on this forum the deal from flyingj. I am always looking for 'more, better, faster'. I purchased a Sportrack map. I was too late for the Pro. Here is my quandry. I can only keep one and am unsure which to keep. I'll sell the other on Ebay. Does anyone have any experience using both? I don't have any real problems with the Venture except for loss of reception in sometimes light cover. It feels kind of 'unnatural' in my hand since I am right handed. Is the reception from the Magellan any better? I recieved the Magellan today and it will be this weekend, at the very earliest, before I can field test the unit. I did a scan to see if this topic has been discussed, but came up emptyhanded. I'm sure it has been and am hoping not to get flamed for asking such a question. Thanks in advance for any help!
  7. I haven't tried this particular software, but I do have experience with Mapopolis. I don't use this for my caching, but use it for navigation and love it. I use it on a PPC as opposed to a palm. For $99, I get navigation with voice prompts. You do have to download a county at a time, but for me that is no biggie. I use an Etrex Venture connected to a Dell Axim.
  8. I have just a quick question that I need an opinion on. I have an Etrex Venture now. I have also ordered a Magellan Sporttrack. My question is concerning the neoprene (did I spell that correctly?) covers I see offered on some websites. Pardon my igornance, but do these interfere with your reception? It seems to me as if they would, but I'm no expert in this area. If there is loss of signal,is it enough to be concerned about? I guess I don't really need one of these, but they look kind of neat. Thanks in advance for any info
  9. I have a Garmin that I use for 'outdoorsy stuff'. I also have a Magellan for my Handspring that I use for street navigation. This is a very cool program. You do have to download maps a county at a time for where you will be traveling, which can be a pain. Once you do, however, I think you will find the features very usefull. You can find exact directions to addressses, points of interest and several other things. With the GPS on, it will even show you your exact location on the street. I have found it to be a little off in some rural areas, but very accurate in the more urban locations. I paid for a year subscription which allows me to download all I need for a year. It is a very handy program to have.
  10. Thanks for the replies. I think I will make a notation on the cache page when I do place it. Thinking about it though, most people cache hunt on the weekends or evenings. I am never at home these time....so much to do, so little time. I suppose the chances of someone looking for the cache at the same moment I happen to be looking out my window are pretty slim. Still, though, I think it is a neat idea.
  11. I am excited about hiding my first cache. I have been thinking for a couple of days about the perfect place to hide it. A stroke of genius hit me this evening...BOOM! (Ouch, that really hurt) Where I live overlooks a pond, on the other side is a small patch of woods that I can see from my living room window. Why not hide it there? I may even get lucky and see when someone is searching for it. Coolness! The area is public property, there is a clearing close by where people walk thier dogs and just hang out. I was thinking of making a notation in the log to smile, I may be watching. Probably not a good idea...people may think a freak is hiding in the trees stalking them. Whatta ya' think?
