  1. As somebody who has to do emergency repairs to dry stone walls, I totally agree with the whole of Grimpil's post. Hides in dry stone walls around me are definitely not encouraged.
  2. Some of the rarest and most expensive jewels give a sparkling ding to South_Stander.
  3. What connects Musgravite, Serendibite, Jeremejevite, Painite and several others to a current theme?
  4. No not Leeds but we've all been beginners at some point. I wasn't going to be able to complete the summer challenge some years ago as there were no nearby events on a free night. We were going away for the weekend so I looked at caches in the area and there was an event at the pub just down the road. We had to eat out anyway so we got a meal, a drink, a natter, a cache in the pub grounds and a souvenir all in one outing. Since then I have been to various events. The format differs slightly but there's usually a log book being signed and the clink of dog tag TBs gets ears twitching. Somebody will talk to you. You might even find somebody else looking "new" and talk to them. The next event will be easier as you recognise names in log books as you cache. Go and enjoy!
  5. If you're thinking of Drink & chat #19 then is a note for new cachers to contact the EO so he can look out for newbies. If it's another event, post your Will Attend and say that it's your first event. Take a note of the Will Attend names and also take your TBs. Both may create the start of a conversation. Many cachers will look out for new people and names which they have seen in logs so that faces can be associated. Get a drink (not necessarily alcoholic), ask who is organising the event and you will be introduced, then enjoy.
  6. Which detective cache did you find?
  7. Well, I searched and there's one detective clue in my area and it's in a cache which I found some years ago but the cache page says it isn't. Using the all types plus detective filter search did not pick up the event being held tomorrow which does have a detective clue on the cache page. So I tried with only the event filter plus detective filter on and the result is one event cache as expected. So I tried adding another type filter and am getting more results although all of them are either found or disabled. I've spent all day today looking for (and not managing to complete) the Wherigo which I failed with last week so I'm not in the mood to work out how to persuade the search function to cough up a reasonable result.
  8. If you run out of ideas do take another look at the etrex 10 which doesn't have the map capability of the 20 and 30. I loved my second hand grey and yellow garmins until they died but eventually bought a new etrex 10. It had all the things I liked about the previous versions plus it had a usb cable. I can load all the cache details quickly but only read what I want. The battery life is better too. Hope you find what you want.
  9. I've pondered about this all evening. Then I had some inspiration and the checker has gone green. Definitely an interesting puzzle.
  10. The two islands are Westray and Papa Westray and the flight is 1.7 miles long. The runway is at Campbeltown Airport 1.89 miles long. Both in Scotland so that's a DING to MartyBartfast.
  11. There is a country which has a runway longer than the shortest scheduled flight from that country? Which country?
  12. Thank you and Happy Birthday Garfield. I'll think of another question soon .......
  13. Well, I was thinking of a little earlier but 79 makes a nice 40. Wow, that's elderly for a cat!
  14. Clyde est à GSAK https://gsak.net/index.php pas de forums.geocaching.com
  15. The original question was "What was the picture on the first puzzle?" which had two possible answers depending on which source is used. One source gives a map of the UK counties and the other gives a map of Europe. The tie breaker question - I was expecting "teaching geography" so Colleda gets the DING!!
  16. Well, we haven't had further guesses from the other two and it's probably time to move this thread on. So, for everyone including those who have googled or equivalent ......... Why was the first jigsaw invented?
  17. OK, nothing heard yet from Boggin's Dad, Speakers-corner or anyone else. I'll wait another few days and see if there are any hotter attempts otherwise I'll post a follow-up question to keep things moving.
  18. Several very good books are available plus many websites depending on what sort of puzzle you are trying to solve. Googling or other equivalent searches will often bring results. Try easy puzzles first and you will soon learn the necessary techniques.
  19. Are you all still thinking about this one or do I post a clue?
