  1. I think what I will do is buy the $59.99 City Navigator Lower 49 States maps from Garmin. That is what all the Nuvis have on them that are sold in the US right?

my nuvi has all of North America, but if you only need the lower 49, that will serve you well. Then you can do a one time lifetime update purchase and apply it to the unit you put the lower 49 on and you'll get free updates once every quarter.

  2. Your GPSMap 62s does not know, nor does it care if you have a premium membership.

Either you were not properly logged in when you downloaded the geocaches or you downloaded them in the wrong format.

Did you load GPX files, or LOC files to your GPSMap 62s? What was the process you sued, from beginning to end?

If you had geocaches loaded PRIOR to upgrading to premium membership, they will ALL have to be deleted from the GPSMap 62s before you send newly downloaded caches.

  3. Is this site still actively maintained? I have registered and have not received a confirmation or activation email. Sent an inquiry via their online form but have not received a reply in about a week.

    Thanks.

    Yes, it is.

Give them some time before sending a follow up.

  4. Experimenting and cleaning my Oregon ( 450 ) I deleted some of the original GPF Files ( find them in ... Garmin/Profiles/....

Can someone please please send me a zip or provide al link contaning the total set of files in the Profiles folder? ( yes include the jpg's ;)

Mail can be sent to cruijsen gmail com

    Thx!

Happy to help but I only have the oregon 300 with the latest updates, im sure the files should be the same but take no responsability if they are not. Would you like me to send them?

    Matt

Yuh thx, I like to try them. I still have 2 working GPF's from the 450 so it will function when they dont fit. Screen sizes are equal, i'll guess it only misses the recalculate route option in the GPF's :)Just got a post from a dutch forum where someone is making a zip from the original 450. Will post the link back here if I receive them.

Do not use the Oregon 300 profiles in the Oregon 450, wait for the Oregon 450 profiles.

  5. So i guess I am still not finding what I am looking for. My field device is a dakota20. I can do a pocket query and put it straight into my device via the usb cord. I dont have to convert files or put it through GSAK. I just click and drag the file over to the GPX folder. I love how easy it is. What I am looking for in a car GPS is the same system. I want to just grab the file and drag it over. Every one I have seen only lets you load one at a time and that is now what I am looking for. Is there a NUVI or something that accepts GPX files?

Car navigation device that allows direct copying of GPX files similar to Dakota 20.

    Hmmm.... Montana 600?

  6. When speaking of your GPSr unit... you should state which make/model. Sometimes it does make a difference.

    But generally --

    You unzip the download file from the PQ;

    Plug the GPSr to your computer;

    Open the GPSr as an external drive;

Drag 'n Drop the PQ files (should be two sets) to either the unit itself or the SD card installed in your unit (your choice).

You should be set to go.....

This confuses me a little. Before we had GSAK, we were dragging the PQ into our 2 Garmin gps units, but I dont remember unzipping. And do you have to pick where you send it to theunit or is it done automatically?

On Garmin GPS the PQ.GPX MUST be unzipped, and must be placed in the GPS:\Garmin\GPX\ or uSD:\Garmin\GPX directory.

  7. Oh goodie, one of the reasons for choosing the Montana may have just gone up in smoke.

I love that big screen and it's great for hiking and caching. Don't really want yet another device on my handlebars to see my cadence :(

Keep trying, and contact Garmin, see if they can help you resolve the issue. Perhaps you will have better luck than I :)

  8. Was hoping to get one that I could just keep in the car mounted on the windshield. Something that takes regular pocket queries.

How are you going to get to the cache if the GPS is kept in the car mounted on the windshield?

  9. Well, version 2.9 for the etrex is out. Ever since the update, I've had some difficulties with it coming up with 'no caches found' when selecting the Geocaches icon. It sees the maps, so I know it's reading the SD card. Power off and on... No caches or waypoints. Off/on again, there they all are.

    Exactly This:

    Try this:

Remove the GPX from the card, let the GPS boot up to "clear" the caches

Return the GPX to the card and boot up

I store maps and GPX files on a card and have not experienced the problem you report, but I always use the boot blank between cache loads trick

THEN add new geocache GPX files.

  10. Thank you everyone for your informaton. I never thought about a camera. If I wait for the Oregon 600, do you think that will have a better camera?

    Nope.

Because the Garmin Oregon 600/600t has no camera, you will have to buy the Oregon 650/650t to get a Camera. (see here) The Oregon 650/650t have the best camera Garmin has ever put in a GPS to date. :)

I would not factor in the camera in a Garmin GPS as a "better camera". If you care at all about the photo quality bring another camera. If you want to take photos of codes on logbooks and cache lids, and have them geotagged to the location you took the photo, sure use the Garmin GPS camera. Mind you my opinion is a bit biased - I go caching with a Nikon DSLR.

If only the Nikon would log caches? :)

No GPS will ever accomplish what your Nikon does, nor should it!

  11.

Could you describe in more detail what you mean? Like a step-by-step example? We are quite new to this GPS - just got it! Thanks for any help! :)

Unfortunately, I do hot have the exact model you do, so step-by-step detail may not be helpful, from myself.

However, you can check this link to find tons of great information about your GPS and how to use it.

  13. Hi, I'm missing a whole day's field notes (50 caches) when I upload to geocaching.com. The days before and after are showing, so its not the date? Its a Dakota 10. Any ideas?

Have you looked at the geocache_visits.txt file in the Dakota 10\Garmin\ directory to see if they are listed?

If they are not, and you are sure you logged them with that GPSr, do you remember if the unit had an unexpected shut down or crash around the time of the last logged cache you can not find? The file may not have been saved correctly if the unit suffered from an unfavorable behavior event.

Does your GPSr also have a Dakota 10\Garmin\geocache_logs.xml file? If so, open it with Internet Explorer and see if the missing logs are present in this file.

Whatever you do; DO NOT SAVE the geocache_visits.txt or geocache_logs.xml file after opening them for viewing. They will not be saved properly, and will be corrupted!

  14. I am looking at buying the Garmin Oregon 450 or another Garmin model. I am sorry if this seems like a stupid question, but I saw a reference somewhere about free maps you can download to the Garmin GPS. Can I get free maps that include roads, to say give me actual driving directions to the cache, or at least close enough so we can walk in? Or to do that, would I need to break the bank and buy their additional maps? We are military, and move every 2 years, so if I get a local map now, then I am going to have to buy another next year, etc. Thanks!

Everything you need to know about maps for your Garmin GPSr, and where to get them can be found right here.

I was referring to a mention of free maps. Just don't know if they work or not.

...and there are many dozens of free maps available from the link I provided.

Why would everyone go to all the trouble to reverse engineer Garmin GPSr, collect all forms of data, compile the maps, provide a portal for others to view and download them, and ultimately put them on their GPS units if they didn't work?

  16. Discovered what we think may be a bug today but we are hoping it's not and someone might have some advice. We were out looking for a cache and had to go off trail. We marked the trail as a waypoint, continued off the trail to the cache. After we found the cache, we wanted to navigate back to the cache. We chose "Where To" and the waypoint we created for the trail and chose "Go." However, it kept bringing up the cache we had just navigated to - although we had stopped the navigation and chosen the waypoint. We tried it over and over several times and it would not display navigation to the waypoint we were trying to chose. We shut it all the way down and back on, stopped the navigation several times but to no avail. Luckily, we weren't too far off trail and we were able to make our way back safely. This experience today was a little disconcerting though. Has anyone else had this issue or have any advice?

Were you watching the geocaching dashboard compass instead of using the actual compass application? The Geocaching compass ALWAYS points to the nearest geocache.

  17.

I am thinking under $300.00, would like a screen that is big enough to see and that I can see in the sunlight and one that will load maps and be fairly acurate, within 10 feet.

The Garmin Oregon 450 or 550 (if you want a mediocre camera) will serve you quite well. Either can be had for $200-$250 USD if you look hard enough.

  18. I am new to Geocaching and to date have been borrowing my GPS. It is time for me to buy one. I need something that I can take with me as I go traveling to such places as Africa, Dubai, USA, and of course where I live in Calgary, AB Canada. Do you have any suggestions which would be the best GPS to buy?

    Such an open ended request.

Let's narrow it down a bit....

    What is your budget?

  19. I think your Dakota was being a bit, shall we say, optimistic.

The best I have ever achieved with the Oregon x50 is 3m, or 7ft - which is pretty good. I also have a Dakota x0, and never have I seen it out perform my Oregon x50.

I could live with 3, but when I was out this morning, best I was getting was 5m, with it sitting around 7m most of the time. Even tested with it on a park bench with an unobstructed view of the sky. My cell phone was getting 2m to 3m. Tough to find a micro with a 7m accuracy and it's reading GZ in the middle of a parking lot and bushes on the edges. I don't expect it to drop me on the cache, but at least give me a rough area to look in, instead of the middle of nowhere.

I have found micros in the middle of parking lots before :)
