  1. I think questions like this might force the reviewers to determine intent. If the side event is intended to draw attendees from the Mega it isn't likely to be published. If the side event is able to stand on its own and draw from another portion of the community it may be published. The main factors they'd likely consider would be distance and time from the Mega event. I'll assume the post above me is referencing MWGB? The guideline only applies to the actual date of the mega, not the full weekend so day before/after events are fine provided the organizing committee agrees with them. They now have some input with the reviewers' decisions. Here's the Help Center article that addresses this issue.
  2. Deepseagoddess has a number of wreck dive caches off the NC Coast. I doubt that BM list will be updated any time soon. The owner of the list archived all of his caches back in December 2015. That's never a good sign.
  3. I've found several liar's caches over the years. For the most part it was always clear to me what type of hunt I was in for, and I came prepared both mentally and physically. Several have been listed as underwater, and in fact they were. I generally enjoy writing better than average logs, so I'm happy to play along with a bit of fiction. Once I found one that was a mere LPC. My log on that one was simply "this is the best cache I have found all weekend". Was I playing along with the request for a lie, or simply stating the plain truth?
  4. Sweet! Many reviewers do have a good sense of humor. Except for the dogs. Dogs don't have much of a sense of humor.
  5. I own one hidden in a similar manner in Raleigh NC. It's gone missing a few times, even had the whole dispenser removed on occasion. But the majority of the times I've visited it for a maintenance run after a series of DNF logs the tiny container has been right where I left it (or at the other side of the ledge). Because it's in a very busy touristy spot a lot of newer cachers look for it.
  6. Fixed it for you. geocaching.com isn't a fortune 500 company, so don't expect it to act like one. There's always been a very casual style at HQ because of the leadership. In fact Jeremy even used to post in these forums with some regularity in the very early days.
  7. ^^This^^ is exactly how I feel too. I post DNF's any time that I make it to GZ and spend more than 30 seconds searching but don't find the cache. I expect the CO will interpret my log. As a CO I will react to a DNF on my hides based on the text of the log and the experience of the logger. But as Keystone pointed out in post #17 there's also an HQ algorithm that recognizes when we as a community have posted a series of consecutive DNF's. Perhaps the CO isn't active any more, or perhaps they just do not take cache maintenance seriously? Either way these automatically generated nag notes can help the volunteer reviewers keep up with keeping the inventory of active caches cleaner. And that makes for a better playing field for all of us.
  8. Hey as long as your geo-ethical self respect is intact more power to you for adopting this stance. I'm with most others who have replied to this thread. The find date is when you visit the EC/Virt site, complete the challenge task, or locate the object/container. If you want to play games with the logging dates for some artificial streak have fun with that.
  9. An exceptionally large chocolate colored sex toy. Even more odd was that it had silver duct tape wrapped around the midsection. Just think about why.
  10. A few years back the NC DMV issued a whole series of WTF plates. Somehow that one slipped by their naughty letter combo censor. If I had received one I would have kept it.
  11. Maybe start the first Moroccan Geocaching Organization?
  12. In the old days raising your hand to be a volunteer reviewer was an automatic disqualification. Here's the Help Center Article on becoming a volunteer reviewer. I suspect there are a few reviewers who cover your entire continent at this time due to the workload. It appears that there have only been a few dozen new listings in your country so far this year. That can be a normal week in other places. Perhaps you can connect with the current reviewers and see how they feel about your offer to help?
  13. It would look something like this, but in cargo shorts not the short runner shorts.
  14. PP is probably correct. After getting burned once by a data transfer glitch on a road trip (think I had a filter set by accident) I have always checked my GPS after the loading is complete. I generally do it via the map page by zooming out for quicker panning and then zooming back in on my targets to ensure that the pretty icons are all there waiting for me.
  15. I chatted with Cybret a few days ago. One of our locals was looking for his tri-fold brochure from the downloads section. The site got hacked and the host became more trouble to deal with than they were worth. He's not sure if it will come back or not. I hope it does.
  16. Here's what the Help Center says about posting NA logs: There's more in the article, just click the link. That said-if I notice that a cache has 6+ DNF logs (*with different dates) going back a year or more, I will post a NA log on it to bring it to a reviewer's attention and help start the process of archiving that listing. * I discount multiple DNFs on the same date on the assumption that several people looking together all missed it as a group and quit looking at the same time.
  17. No. This is geocaching, not foursquare, pokego, etc. that requires badges and rewards. The reward is getting outside to explore fun and interesting new places and if you're lucky finding a cache at the end of the outbound journey. Well except for those silly souvenirs they added a few years ago.
  18. Trust me I would love to see a Giga event on this continent, it's the only icon I am missing. But for the reasons I outlined in post #9 I'm doubtful it will happen anytime soon. The 5th Berkshire Mega was held 2 Saturdays ago, and only has 491 attended logs. Last year's drew 610. Boston and NYC are both within 150 miles of it, and almost all of that on interstate highways. I haven't attended one of these yet, but do know the area well and doubt that the venue could handle 5000. There have been two NYC area Metro Mega events so far, and a third one is scheduled for this fall. So far they've had 658 attended logs in 2014 and 459 logs last year. That's a long way from getting 5000 cachers in one place.
  19. I loved caching in Arizona. You guys can hide a cache in anything! I found caches hidden in actual 70's Tupperware and a briefcase. Dry as a bone! That stuff would be lucky to last a month here in any season. While you might find 70s tupperware in good shape there, you can only cache in the 70's a few months out of the year. Today's projected high is 110°!
  20. LOL!! I can't believe I'm not on the list! With apologies to Groucho Marx, I would never want to be on a list that would have name on it.
  21. Here are the actual requirements for hosting a future Geowoodstock. They don't specify rural vs. urban locations. The challenges and priorities are finding a suitable and affordable venue that is close enough to a major airport and metropolitan center with a decent geocaching community. It's not likely that you'll find many appropriate venues right in an urban area. And rural areas won't have the cache density nor a community of organizers to pull it off. Suburban venues offer the best balance. Only a very small number of past Geowoodstocks have been in truly rural areas. This year's venue was a state park just outside of the Beltline highway only 15 miles from city center. Last year's took place in Boonesboro MD a small town of only 3300. But it was only 50-60 miles from Washington DC and Baltimore. GW12 took place in St Charles MO, one of the first suburbs outside of St Louis and 20 miles from city center. GW11 was in Lakeland FL, a small city of over 100,000 and right off the interstates between Tampa and Orlando. GWX was in Sellersburg IN just across the river from Louisville. GW9 was in Warren PA at the county fairgrounds; probably the most rural setting we've had. But Cleveland, Pittsburgh, and Buffalo are less than 150 miles away. GWXV is in Waynesville, NC a small town of 10,000. But it's only 30 minutes from Asheville whose metro area has 250,000. And we're only 250 miles or less from many major metro areas including Cincinnati, Louisville, Nashville, Atlanta, and Charlotte all of which have very active caching communities. We're confident that there will be a great turnout.
  22. Deleting NA logs doesn't get them off the reviewers' radar screens, just the cache page.
  23. That shouldn't affect you unless you're going to be in that country during the promo dates. I agree that two is a small number for the other members of the community in that country, I'm guessing there aren't many cachers there. The criteria isn't fixed, so there could be a third and even fourth option made available by the deadline.
  24. I'd be pretty surprised to see a GIGA event in the USA any time soon. 1. Megas are almost common these days in the US. There's one just about every weekend in the summer. 2. You would need a substantial and experienced organizing and host committee to plan one. 3. Anyone who has adequate mega experience might be capable, but they're already occupied planning the mega. 3a. There is a huge difference between planning for just over 500 and 5000. 4. The population density is much greater in Europe than it is in North America. The Northeast is the only part of this country that might have the population density to make it work. 5. Our country is too dependent on auto travel to get 5000 cachers in one place. Europeans are perfectly happy jumping on a train to go 5+ hours away for a weekend. They use mass transit on a regular basis.
  25. You are painting with a pretty broad brush there. There are quite a few reputable small companies that support the community by traveling all over the country to attend events and sell their products. What evidence do you have that they are all untrustworthy and do not protect customers data? Or are you just stirring the pond with one of these today for kicks and giggles?
