  1. Just wanted to let everyone with a travel bug know that grand plans and adventures are alive and well. Three of us (Lee Ofsted, Tamara Williams, and DiegoGal) sent three travel bugs (TB Laguna Beach, TB La Jolla Beach, and TB Rincon Beach) out September 23, 2007 in a race from the Olympic Peninsula in WA State to "Bells" the famous Australian surfing beach. TB La Jolla Beach reached the finish line on July 9, 2008. Thanks to all of the great cachers out there helping us relieve our youth! Great fun...great sport....great people. Lee Ofsted
  2. Unless I geocache in town I have a light-weight collection of the usual 10 essentials for day hiking to put in my small daypack. Glad to see a few people mentioned whistles and space blankets--the things most commonly left off of peoples lists. My nephew who's in the military gave me a great tip for fire material. That hand sanitizer in your bag makes a great fire starter--just throw in some waterproof matches. Thanks for the idea to take some baggies. I could start replacing the ones needed instead of just wishing I could.
  3. I'm encouraged to hear that your TB showed up after 7 months. My first TB Where Eagles Soar was having wonderful adventures and traveled thousands of miles and then got picked up by someone who'd only cached five times. After a couple of months I sent a "sugar coated message" but got no reply. Now it's a couple of months later and I've been thinking of having a wake and putting it in the graveyard. Now I think I'll wait a bit--maybe even try one more note???? Lee
  4. Not sure about the markings. I do know that if the lid is hinged on side of the can, it is old and if the can is hinged on the end it is newer. The only pic I could find is pretty big. Here ya go on the older can: Thanks, hikergps, for the photo and the information. My ammo box doesn't have a side hinge. I suspect it's not very old after all. It will still make a great cache box. Thanks again, Lee
  5. I was just given an ammo can (hope to create my first cache in the not too distant future), and was told that it dates back to WWII. There are several markings on it. Does anyone know if any of the markings would confirm that? Thanks, Lee
