The new challenge checker is in place now, so the task is a little harder.

In the spirit of trying to make it easier, I created a series of bookmarks which contain all the Charter Member active caches.  It only goes through caches that were published through mid-October.

This was somewhat of a daunting task and I'm sure it's not perfect.  I will say that I do not intend to update it frequently, or at all as caches become archived, transferred to new owners, or new one published.  Hopefully it will help with finding Charter Member caches since I believe these should be able to be turned into pocket queries?

I only made them shareable for the time being, so if there are comments and/or feedback, let me know before they are published as Public.  I figured this forum topic was a good place to start.

I know it's a lot to wade through.  I tried to make it as regional as possible, but there was overflow beyond the 1000 cache limit in some cases so I either split it up by year or stuck them in the catch all is "Everything Else" which includes most of the rest of the world as well.

Are there plans to update these lists?   As a charter member who didn't previously have any active caches, I kept getting asked at events if I had any active, so last week I placed one out and would like to get it on this list so people can find it.

Does a charter member patch exist?  Would like to get one.

I think charter member merchandise should be a thing.   I was surprised that the big anniversary event in Seattle last year didn't have anything going on for charter members.  No meet & greet or swag to give to charter members to entice them to show up and stand out.   Maybe for the 25th Anniversary?

  3. Small world. I was checking out video of Going APE...All Over Again and stumbled upon a Block Party Video put out by Groundspeak and I'm in it. Quite the small part. At 0:44.

I'm in the video as well... At 0:10, you can see someone's back with a yellow t-shirt on and a camera bag strap; that's me!

  4. >>The Geobeagle logging feature logs to coord.info with Textmarks which finally puts your log into your field notes at Geocaching.com.

I tried unsuccessfully to link my GeoBeagle to Geocache fields notes.

I tried entering the codes that were returned to me when I sms'd GEOC to 41411.

On the geocaching page, Trimble's Geocache Linking.

It responded: No account was found with the information provided.

I tried to retrieve another set of codes but the SMS request returned the same codes which are still not working.

    Any advice please?

I have the same problem, posted a couple times about it on the forums, and never heard a response. I don't think this feature is used much, since no one seems to be able to help.

  5. I am trying to set up my phone and have followed the instructions at http://coord.info/textmark.aspx

In the section titled "Using TextMarks for the first time", step 6 says I use the ID# and the password/pin from the initial text I get from GEOC to link the account, however whenever I enter the information I received, it tells me: "No account was found with the information provided."

    Any ideas?

So I guess this feature isn't used by many, since no one is able to answer?

Well hope that will help someone.

THANK YOU! I just went out and bought the 1GB one (only one left in the store). I much prefer the Easy Rebates over mail in ones, which is why I went there instead of Best Buy where it's the same price after rebate. I'm currently loading 1GB of data on it now!

  8. Well, I finally decided to upgrade my current GPSr. I have the Garmin 76S currently, so I bought the 76CSx (so they can share the data/power cables and mounts). I ordered the Auto Nav pack from gpsdiscount.com which comes with City Select v7, which I asked them about and they said Garmin will upgrade to City Navigator v8 for free! I can't wait to take the new unit out caching!

Just got the new unit today and took it out caching! I like the speed at which it locks. After it initialized itself to my location, I was able to power it up in my house, and it locked within 30 seconds!

Outside, I was getting an accuracy of around 10-12ft most of the time.

Unfortunately, it was my wife who first found the cache that we were hunting... Oh well, I did get this one for her mostly (for the auto-routing feature).

  9. I haven't used my 76CSx under heavy tree cover yet but I expect it to work pretty well. With my 76CS I didn't get satellites inside my house. I couldn't even get sats in my wife's car unless the unit was in the windshield. The new 76CSx gets signal in her car easily. I was downloading some stuff from my computer to the 76CSx and left it sitting a while - (it draws power from the USB port when plugged into the compuer!) - and I snapped a screenshot of the satellites it was getting.

This is a screenshot taken while the 76CSx was sitting on my desk inside my house and nowhere near a window.

I can't wait until I get mine (tomorrow or Tuesday). I went on a 5 mile hike today with a good amount of tree cover, and I lost signal half the time. This made me miss a cache that was along the trail, since I didn't know where it was.

  10. Just to ask another related question to this topic:

So, what is the best way (which parameters to check) to get Pocket Queries that are always up to date? I currently have 4 pocket queries set up -- two for traditional and two for multis, each set for 100 mile radius of two different zip codes. How often should I run these, and having the base database, should I now only request "updated in the last 7 days" and run maybe twice each week? Don't know if this will cause me to miss some updated logs, etc. Can someone let me know how they manage their PQ's?

And, it seems that it's best to just delete all waypoints from GSAK, your PDA and your GPSr and then start from fresh when you get new pocket queries? Isn't there a way to tell the GSAK program to just send those Waypoints which have changed to your devices?

    Thanks for anticipated input.

Being in a very cache dense area (Seattle), I have my pocket queries cover dates places. So in all, I think I've got about 15 PQ's that return ~500 caches each. I run 3 a day, Monday-Friday, which gives me a chance to run a one off query if I need to. I also have a PQ that checks for all caches in last 7 days, and I run that every day. This keeps GSAK up to date with minimal overlap (just for the last 7 days one).

Did you order the GPS 76 CSX unit from gpsdiscount.com as well? I am going to bite the bullet too before the rebate expires and am looking for the best deal from a reliable company. I was thinking of amazon.com.

    Thanks for your response. :anicute:

Yes, I ordered the GPS as well from GPSDiscount.com. I ordered my 76S from there 4 years ago, and I've been happy with them. To find the 76CSx from their web site, click on the link to handheld gps' and choose from there, or go directly to the URL: http://www.gpsdiscount.com/products/index.html?p=917

The price there for just the unit is $439 before the rebate, and that includes free Fedex Express shipping (2-3 business days). I ordered yesterday, and the package was already sent out. According to FedEx my GPS should be here Tuesday.

I did have a problem with the credit card I used. I mistyped the expiration date, so the card was declined. However they were quick to respond and we got it straightened out and it still shipped the same day I ordered. I'm very happy with them. Also, you get a free t-shirt when you buy a gps.

Got mine for $407.00 before rebate at Shipdog.com.

I bought mine from shipdog.com as well. Fast delivery. I'm very satisfied with them.

    I just glanced at shipdog's website and I didn't see a 76CSx listed, though I saw a 76CS. perhaps they're out of stock currently?

  13. I sent an e-mail to Garmin asking about the free upgrade to Nav 8 if I buy Select 7 right now. No response yet to the e-mail, however I do see the responses posted above.

My husband called Garmin Customer Service yesterday (Wednesday) and sat on hold for 1/2 hour to talk to one of their reps. The representative told him that Navigator v. 8 isn't even out yet, so no we wouldn't qualify for a free upgrade. He said they didn't have a release date on the regular version yet - possibly August. He also said that City Select is a different product so we could only get upgrades to CS not Navigator.

Maybe he's new. After all the good things I've heard about Garmin's support, this surprises me.

He did verify that GPS Discount is an authorized distributor, so we are going to go ahead and purchase the package and then fight for the upgrade if we have to. :-)

I just pruchased my 76CSx from GPSDiscount, but before that asked about the package with the City Select 7, and if it now included City Navigator 8. They said no, but Garmin would upgrade it for free. So if when I get it Garmin won't give the free upgrade, I'm going to follow up with GPSDiscount, since that was their claim.

  15. Feature #2

Suggested coordinates- This appears to have been happening for a while in the logs anyway, as many different folks with different hardware and experience, get a lot of different coordinates. Maybe an option box on the page when logging a find to suggest coordinates to the cache owner. Would help create some good average coordinates for everyone to be more accurate.

Already there, just click on the checkbox for "Add a waypoint to the log".
