Marine Wheels Aloha Two of these are 1/1 caches, on the surface it may look as though they are just tough to find. Taken in context with all the false logs (at least 4 have verified they didn't sign physical log) I think it is pretty obvious they are just messing with people. Rusty... 2. A lot of the conversation here seems to center on the repetitive log entries. I have had plenty of multiple cache days and yes sometimes it does seem like I am writing the same thing. But the bigger concern is that they placed fake caches. Perhaps you think that they are only cheating themselves by faking a log but what about the caches they say they hid? At least one of them is in an area that is potentially very dangerous, what if someone fell and was seriously hurt looking for a cache that never existed in an area nobody should have been climbing? Are they still only hurting themselves? If you go hunting a real cache you know that someone else has already been there so it is possible, but if I just pop in some coords off a map there are no such assurances. I say delete everything the entered on that day. Rusty... Rusty & Libby's Geocache Page

But if you were it's a natural reaction not to bring attention to it. I usually carry a printout with me and at least one time it helped explain what I was doing to someone that thought I must be up to no good. That was also a nightime situation. I guess I would probably investigate if I saw a flashlight poking around the woods near my house at midnight too. Rusty... Rusty & Libby's Geocache Page
  5. A lot of forums have a catagory they call something like "FOR FUN" and all the those wacky and witty chatters can go in there and create stupid topics and chat to their hearts content. I don't mind the regurgitated topics that will always happen as new people come in. A more dynamice FAQ would help that situation. What I dislike are all the people who seem to never reply to any topic in a serious manner, they just go on and on with their 'humorous' banter. You know who you are. I occasionally chuckle if I bother reading it but mostly I just move on to another thread once they get started. Give them their own area and try to keep things a bit more on topic. Rusty... 6. What I don't understand is why you didn't mention any of this in your log? That makes no sense. It looks to me like the owner responded to some no finds and archived his cache but still has no idea what happened. Here's a link to the cache which is archived: Yankin my chain Rusty... 7. You seem to assume that everyone that visits YOUR cache will have planned it to the nth degree. With printouts from YOUR cache, maps to YOUR cache, a suitable collection of themed trade items for YOUR cache, etc. Lighten up a bit! Very seldom do I go on a cache spree without hunting a few that I know nothing about other than there GC# that was downloaded into my GPSr. Heaven forbid I should find a themed cache and not have a politically correct trade item. Geesh Rusty... Rusty & Libby's Geocache Page

  9. quote:Originally posted by kaauz:I'm getting very frustrated. I bought the Magellan 3.15 and could not get any closer than .01 miles, it was a 3.07version, which is about useless when geocaching. I have been using my Mag315 for 150 finds and about the first 30 or so were without the firmware upgrade. You simply get within .01 miles and then navigate from the lat-lon screen, go n/s to the right lat then e/w to the correct longitude and find the cache. The firmware you have does not mean you can't go caching. I have since done 2 upgrades without a problem. I find that the Magellans performance in dense cover is so superior to the etrex's that I wouldn't even consider one for geocaching. IMHO, your milage may vary. Rusty... Rusty & Libby's Geocache Page

If they stayed at work they would get sucked into doing something and would not get any break. Nothing could mean reading a book thats in their lap. Or taking a nap that would not be appropriate in their office. I get a one hour lunch every day and it only takes ten minutes to eat my sack lunch. I enjoy parking in the shade at a nearby park and listening to sports talk radio. If I stay at the office the interuptions are constant and the break is non-existant. Now if someone hides a cache nearby I will do a lunchtime search Otherwise I'm happy just vegetating in the air conditioning, or on a cooler day rolling down the window and listening to the birds. 12. I just got my first report and this is really going to be a time saver. The only quirk I notice is that my list of all the caches I haven't found within 200 miles still contains the caches that I hid. I can manually remove them in a fraction of the time I spent before but it would be nice to just not select them. Cache kudos, Rusty... Rusty & Libby's Geocache Page
  13. We ususally print maps out of Street Atlas and attach them to the cache printouts when we go on a planned jaunt. But we also have all the state caches loaded into the GPSr under their waypoint name so when we drive somewhere and one pops up close by we'll go look for it. Sometimes we don't even know the name of it unless it's written on the container. Rusty... Rusty & Libby's Geocache Page

  16. At this point we will do any cache that gets listed in Michigan. I only know of one locationless and we did it. We also have a webcam cache and at some point will do it also. Beyond that I've only done two other locationless caches and one of them was "Where's in a name" which was very clever and took some work. I care about my total find count but only compete on a state level, I don't want to inflate my find total with a bunch of out-of-state locationless caches. If they were totalled seperately I would do more. Micros, multi-stages and the rest are all just ordinary caches and I don't make any distinction, we will do all of them. I don't consider myself picky because we will do anything on our 100 mile list. Rusty... Rusty & Libby's Geocache Page

  18. quote:Originally posted by Zzzoey: PS I noticed that the cache container on the page also was missing the geocaching.. in http://www.geocaching.com. Sortof odd! He probably left off the 'geocaching' to make it a little more generic in case someone from a competing site was interested. Simply a business decision to increase his potential market. As a long time ebay powerseller I seriously doubt if he will be able to sell many of them, and although he is probably making a buck on them he's not gonna get rich. Chances are he is just trying to fill a niche and make enough to cover his time. Personally I don't think $10 is that much to pay for a ready made cache. I've been to several excellent caches that could be great caches had the hider not set out an old sandwich container full of golf balls. Even though this is a cookie cutter cache it has decent trade items and I wouldn't mind finding one. With only a smidgen of creativity it could be personallized into something quite nice. Rusty... I once had someone cancel a $300 paypal payment to me after I had already shipped their item the same day they paid. Paypal was no use at all so I emailed the person and told them if they did not refuse the shippment when it arrived that my next call was to his local police department. He refused the shipment and I was only out the shipping cost. In cache magnet's case I would either call the seller's local police department and report him using the name/address you mailed the check to, or I would pursue it thru the post office as mail fraud. Or you could do both. It may not get your money back but if he ripped that many people off he deserves prosecution. Rusty... Rusty & Libby's Geocache Page

  21. It used to be location but since I've got my area clean within 50 miles it's just a matter of keeping up with the new ones close by. Since it will require an hour drive I look at difficulty, terrain, and number of nearby caches. I also solicit recommendations from other cachers in the areas I plan to visit and give that a lot of value. Rusty... Rusty & Libby's Geocache Page
  22. quote:Originally posted by BrianSnat: I'd be hesitant to archive any cache without the owners consent. Its one thing when there are a bunch of "not founds" after a number of "founds" and the owner doesn't respond. But I've seen several "archive this cache" requests out there for caches that are obviously difficult to find. People must be certain that a cache is missing before they ask to archive it. If it's archived and it still is there, it immediately becomes nothing more than litter. I've noticed that too. I saw one recently on a cache I knew to be difficult and I placed my own note next to the archive request. Jeremy then made the cache "unavailable" until the cache owner could check it out or for two weeks. I think that was a very fair way to handle it. It's a 2hr drive and 6 mile round trip hike or I would just go check it myself. I also agree with you comment that it becomes litter and I think we need to be conscious of that. Rusty... Plus you'll be fertilizing the ground! (of course not by the cache). Alan To be in complete compliance with the "leave no trace" philosophy you should pack it out. I don't do it and have no intention of doing it (gross), but there actually are reasons for it. Biodegradable materials can still last a long time, bury too shallow and critters dig it up, bury too deep and it won't decompose. You could always just use leaves, but be sure you take your field guide to plants. Uh, Doc I got this rash... Rusty... Rusty & Libby's Geocache Page

  25. I know a spot in the UP of Michigan where the shore is just sheets of fossils. It's on an island and requires a mile hike in from the nearest 4WD accessable point. I found out about it when I saw it marked as a "starred" natural feature on a state map one time and we hiked till we found it. It would be a great place for a real cache but since I have only been there twice someone else can do it someday. Rusty... Rusty & Libby's Geocache Page
