  1. Sounds like a good spot for my M Go Blue hat! I have to admit this might have been the first time I ever rooted for Oh-how-I-hate Ohio State. I was tired of hearing the Big 10 get slammed and I'm glad they won. Congrats. Rusty... -------------------------------------------------- Friends don't let friends cache locationless! 2. There are caches outside Michigan? Rusty... -------------------------------------------------- Friends don't let friends cache locationless! Rusty & Libby's Geocache Page Michigan Geocaching Organization
  3. My Sportrak Pro is normally at 13' and I find that WAAS is greatly overated. My old Mag315 is every bit as accurate (according to the EPE) without the bells & whistles. 4. quote:Originally posted by jonboy:If a war breaks out in the middle east, we will have a lot more to worry about then will our GPSr work. Oil supplies will almost certainly be disrupted and we may not have enough gasoline to even get to work. I remember the gas lines of the seventies and I also remember a war with a tiny country that we just stumbled into and lost. If we keep rolling the dice of war, sooner or later we are going to come up snake eyes again. Q. What did the farmer say when Chicken Little told him the sky was falling? A. Holy $%#t!!! A talking chicken! -------------------------------------------------- Friends don't let friends cache locationless! Rusty & Libby's Geocache Page Michigan Geocaching Organization
  5. Actually the oldest active cache is Mingo in Kansas. The first 70 or so caches are not in date order. They were imported from earlier data state by state. 6. I deleted all of my locationless finds (2) that were outside the state of Michigan quite awhile ago. That only leaves 1 of them in my count. My goal is to do every Michigan cache. It'll never happen but I like goals. Hides are important but I like seeing stats on both. Not all hides require much thought, we've done plenty of virtual and regular caches that were more after thought than fore thought. 9. Libby & I both have Aurora's that we use all the time for our nightime caching & hiking. I also carry a small 'quarter size' pocket led for a more directed beam and Lib has a small maglite that she uses when we need extra light. A big spotlight would be nice sometimes for searching but I am always minimal when it comes to weight. 11. I think Web-ling about sums up my opinion. ... except for people that have less than 100 posts, fewer than 20 combined finds/hides, and just joined this year... I won't even bother looking over the edge of my high horse at those people Rusty... -------------------------------------------------- Friends don't let friends cache locationless! 12. Based on personal experience winter caching is a mixed bag. The GPSr display is a bit slow but the reception is increased without tree cover. Problem is that most of the caches were hidden when there was tree cover so the actual coords are not as important as the hiders coordinates. The biggest problem is that not very many caches are hidden in a 'winter friendly' way. The easy cache lying under a bush becomes just another clump of snow under a dozen bushes. The trade off is that if there is other cacher activity you can just follow tracks and leave your GPSr in the car. Look for the yellow arrow pointing to the cache[] We had about a 50% success rate in previous winters but since I absolutely hate winter we don't get out that often. Another plus is that if you get a good snow melt the caches stick out like a sore thumb. Rusty... -------------------------------------------------- Friends don't let friends cache locationless! 13. That note about the property owner not minding was just added today or recently. It was not on the original cache page and it was not there at the time the cache was archived. 14. I was all set to complain about wanting both versions because the new one is preferrable 90% of the time and nice looking but I still like the old style once a week or so. Then I saw Jeremy's post and all was well in my world again. So I went to check it out and I keep getting the old page? I went from the "Seek a cache" page and chose Michigan and I also clicked on the MI link at the top of My Cache page. Both links give me the old style listing? 15. It worked very quickly and polled more info than any of the other available tools. I really like all the additional information it gives me. A few things I noticed that I would like to see: 1> Magellan support not just Garmuck! 2> Export to .CSV file that would allow it to be manipulated to fit custom needs. I currently do this with GeoBuddy so that I can put in into the format I need for DeLorme Street Atlas. 3> Support for Miles for those of us in the USA that just can't go metric. Those are just suggestions but this is a valuable download just the way it is. I can still export to a .LOC file and do anything I could before. I just sent in the report for our first cache tonight, and am also anxiously awaiting its posting (to correct a mistake already)! I can't wait to see who finds it first, and what people think of it. Rosemont Team Oh man! We're not going to be able to get out again before Wednesday We already have two new ones today within 20 miles and it's killing me looking at them and knowing they haven't been found yet Rusty... -------------------------------------------------- Friends don't let friends cache locationless! 17. We pretty much go with the ultra-lightweight philosophy when it comes to hiking. New Balance 8xx series lighter than sneakers and all the traction of hiking boots. $70-$100 Libby & I wear shorts and sandals most of the summer but now that it's cooling down shoes make more sense. 19. I believe it is simply the signiture item for a person in Lowell that is also an electician. It's not in the online log but I think that if you check the cache log there is mention of it. It's pretty common to find items like that with either home or business coordinates. Rusty... -------------------------------------------------- Friends don't let friends cache locationless! 20. Tons of applause for those guys and their initiative. But doesn't it make you mad to think of the morons that would trash a park that much in the first place. 22. I use Clayjar's system as a guide but I usually drop the terrain down half a star. I also pay close attention to the logs and adjust my ratings accordingly. Two of my caches will vary in difficulty depending on time of year and I change the rating on them. 23. Place a real cache and put clues to it in existing caches. Here is an example of one I placed near me: All 4 One 1 For All Some of the caches I put clues in were only found infrequently before and this has increased activity a lot. Deep down, you _knew_ somebody was going to http://www.cafeshops.com/cp/store.aspx?s=geocachingpd to be the first. Wow, I can't believe that in the other thread everybody voted against the GX logo and went with that totally new one. Just Kidding. Still, it would have been safer to see what everyone decides upon. Also, I prefer the "rustic" version of the logo. So then we'll have Skydiver's NEW logo store But seriously -I don't remember seeing that quote Skydiver found for his stuff but it is excellent. That perfectly expresses my approach to caching. - I also like the rust(y)ic version but all of the deriviates are just that deriviates. If the GX is chosen it doesn't matter which one is used because they are all the same thing. Anyone would recognize either version.
