  1. Everything is <1 minute or > hour. That is once you actually make it to the cache coords. Rusty... Rusty & Libby's Geocache Page
  2. I'll leave my comment here rather than the other thread but I think the members only caches address the plundering problem best. I haven't used the option yet but I have had a change of heart in my opinion of them. If someone is specifically targeting you nothing is going to stop them. I always have plundering in mind when placing caches and try to make them less obvious to casual hikers. I read once where you should place a cache about 10 yards further from the trail than the average hiker would go to take a leak! I just had my first case of semi-plundering (according to the logs) but I still don't think that will change my mind. As far as increasing the online logging of caches, I don't know. It is frustrating to me as a hider when I see lots of logs in the physical cache that aren't online but I guess if that is how they choose to play they have that right. At least by checking my caches I know they are still being enjoyed. I have a friend that has dabbled at caching but he is so paranoid about privacy & spam that he would not register his email anywhere and he doesn't really understand how to setup a throw-away hotmail account. If he had to register he would not cache, period. His paranoia is wierd but he's probably not the only one. One thing that would definitely help reduce plundering is if people would re-hide caches as well as they found them, but that is a topic for another thread. My 2cents, Rusty... But he gave me really specific directions on where it is, so I'll go looking before then. I think the fact that the hider only gets to the spot once a year is key here. Cache responsibly folks, don't hide it if you are not willing to accept the responsibility to maintain it. 3 no finds in a row raises a flag, the fact that it's in a area that has seen a lot of weather changes since the previous find several months ago raises another flag. If the hider cannot come up with a way to confirm it's existance in a timely manner they should temporarily deactivate it at the least. Rusty... Rusty & Libby's Geocache Page

I just need to sort out the most efficient way of doing this without affecting the database too much. Jeremy Jeremy Irish Groundspeak - The Language of Location I'm glad you are removing them from the find count. I logged a couple when I first saw them but quickly realized this wasn't the way I wanted to pad my counts. The dilema was that some of the locationless caches are kind of interesting and I was thinking of setting up a new account just to log those finds. This will let me hunt them if I want but still keep the counts real Rusty... Rusty & Libby's Geocache Page

Charter members could visit the page and click through to the merchant of their choice. Opening the possibility of spam is a bad idea, and commercials in the discussion boards is a bad idea. Don't start down the slippery slope. A page that charter members could click to woul d not be a sell out to advertisers and I could support something along that line. That would allow an outlet for sponsorship without the blatant commercialism that nobody wants. Rusty... Rusty & Libby's Geocache Page
  10. I have 3 hidden so far, one is nearby and I check it about once a month. The other two are more remote and hadn't been found since last summer/fall so I checked them this spring to be sure they made it thru the winter ok. Of course if anyone logged a problem that sounded legit I would check them asap. Rusty... Rusty & Libby's Geocache Page
  11. Pet peeve: hints that say look near a tree, when the cache is hidden in a $#%$$ forest!! This particular cache was also buried.. another pet peeve of mine! It was also winter time, if you bury a cache in an area that gets snow you should give enough info to find the thing. Can you tell that this one pi$$ed me off? I don't care if there is a hint or not, and I think the rating should reflect this fact, but if you do leave a hint it should actually mean something. The double meaning hints are fun and can add to the hunt. I also like Markwell's idea to manually encrypt a hint in the description part of cache page, I think I'll try that one. Rusty... 13. I always create a new email alias when I have to register on any site. I did the same thing on here and in a year and a half I got exactly one piece of mail I thought might be spam from a competing site. I copied it to Jeremy and he took it very seriously, it turned out to be innocent but I was please with how quick he acted on it. Since then I have started using my personal email address on here with no problems. Rusty...(nospam)
  14. I just did a little research becuase this thread made me wonder how many have stuck with caching. I manually checked every profile from #1 to #100 (yeah I need a life) and what I found surprised me. Of the first 100 to register at geocaching.com in September of 2000, I found that 22 have logged on in the last 90 days since the new system went into effect. Out of those 22: 14 have 10 or few finds (2 with 0) 3 have between 11 and 20 finds 3 have between 21 and 100 finds 1 has 141 finds 1 has 336 finds. There are 14 cachers that have been here since the beginning and still log in to check things out yet they have less than 10 finds, that amazed me. I found a few other neat things too, check out the hides for profile #2. Rusty... Rusty & Libby's Geocache Page

  16. I have been of the opinion that it is easier to be forgiven than to get permission. However I have been very careful in my choice of spots. I guess if I thought it might be questionable but I really wanted to place one there, I would ask first. Rusty... Rusty & Libby's Geocache Page
  17. Hey Doc, did you check the .loc file on MIGO of all the Michigan caches? Mike also has a good clickable map of the Detroit area on his webpage to see things graphically. I found that mapping them out was really helpful when I made a cache trip over there last fall. Rusty... Rusty & Libby's Geocache Page
  18. For anyone that has not seen it on the cache page, the event location has been moved to Grand Woods Park in Lansing. Check it out!! See ya there, Rusty... Rusty & Libby's Geocache Page
  19. Due to the greater than anticipated response, which is a good thing, we are trying to secure a nearby park. This is getting too big to just meet in the mall. Keep an eye on the forums and the cache page for further details. I will also try to send a note to everyone that has expressed interest if we can finalize an alternate location. If anyone has any short notice ideas for an alternate location please post them. We would like to get this set in the next couple days. This will still be an informal gathering but we have added one agenda item: discussing the creation of a Michigan Geocaching Organization (MIGO). If you have not already registered for the Yahoo Group you can follow the link below. It will be a BYOB & lunch gathering and we will try to use the same time period. Rusty... 22. By the way you are welcome to use any of the logos I have posted on my personal geocache page if yo like them. I would recommend copying it to your own storage 'cuz I keep adding and deleting them as I make changes or new ones. You could always email me if you just want me to send you anything in particular or a specific size. I am using 88x31 in my sig line to keep it byte sized. Rusty... Rusty & Libby's Geocache Page
  23. Substitue "[" square brackets for the parenthisis in the following line: (URL=http://www.yoursite.com/yourpage.htm)(IMG)http://www.yoursite.com/image.gif(/IMG)(/URL) Thanks to LoCache for the hints. Rusty... PS..if you change your profile and it doesn't work you need to logout after you make a 2nd change for the change to happen. At least that's the way it worked for me.
