  1. I've got a Magellan eXplorist 210 which has been adequate for caching, but it's b&w. If I were in the market, I'd probably look hard at Garmin Venture or Vista, based on what's been written here. $250 will buy you a lot of GPSr. Check this post for some more advice from people more knowledgable than I.
  2. Active setup sounds right. I was fighting the same problem I think, and got the fix for it when I posted this today.
  3. I think I once knew how to do this but I can't remember, and would appreciate help. I have a handful of geocache list files on my eXplorist 210, and in the list when I browse it, there is one that is in bold letters. I'm guessing that's the default list, since only those caches appear on my map page. When I search for caches from one of the other lists, those caches appear on the map until I zoom the map, then they disappear. What's going on? Is there such a thing as a "default" geocache list?
  4. 99 degrees here yesterday, what happened to spring?? I think we forgot to have it here. Can I send anyone a few degrees?
  5. Sounds like a bit much to me too, but it was probably done with tongue in cheek. But yeah, when I go, I want to find caches, not read some rant. BTW I have that phone too, awesome isn't it? I was stoked when I realized I could put Cachemate on it.
  6. Step by step guide to using a Palm is here: http://www.geocacher-u.com/resources/paperless.html or this program is popular too: http://www.gsak.net/ I'm kind of new to using Palm as well, but my phone has Palm OS on it so I was stoked to learn I could use that.
  7. Thanks, although my eXplorist can only hold 200 caches so I would like to keep the results under 200, correct? What if I shorten the search radius to something like 5 or 10 miles? And I'm not sure what you mean by date instead of mileage... I have to enter my location somewhere, yes? Thanks again.
  8. Could be??? Oh trust me, it is Welcome to the party!
  9. You might read this post here, this guy has had both and prefers the 210. "I find my Explorist FAR more accurate than the Venture Cx." Just in case you're on the fence still. Maybe email him.
  10. Stuck pixels maybe, like on computer monitors. I sent my 210 back to Magellan when the firmware locked up, they sent me a new one about a month later. If it's bothersome I'd call in the warranty, that's what it's for.
  11. Love the product and the company. I got one for my PSP that had some weird lines on it, and they replaced it no questions asked. Worth every penny. If you carry your GPSr in your pocket with keys or something and you'll end up hating yourself if you don't have a shield. Good advice about the dish soap, I also had better luck with that then with the spray. Just make sure there is NOTHING on the screen when you apply it, no dust, prints, etc. or you'll be looking at them for life. My 2 cents
  12. Here's my deal: I will do a query for my zipcode, and I don't check any filters or types of caches or anything. I get the email, upload to my eXplorist 210, and it's good. Then a week later I'll do the same search, and suddenly caches near my home are missing. Then I'll do another search, and they are back! I am searching for 200 caches within 200 miles of zip, but there are hundreds in my city so of course the radius ends up more like 5 miles. Could it be that the list hits 200 and then cuts off any caches at random? They aren't de-activated, I checked. Can anyone explain this? Thanks.
  13. I've had the eXplorist 210 for almost a year, and I've been satisfied. I can't compare to the other units as this is my only GPSr. Included software works great on my PC, uploading to the unit is a snap, and this thing is built for geocaching. Not complicated, if you are at all tech savvy. Eats batteries pretty quickly, but I think they all do. Also I mount it to my mountain bike and it's kinda fun as a bike computer of sorts. I put on an Invisible Shield from shieldzone.com, as I've heard it scratches easily. I should mention that the firmware on the unit crashed, and Magellan tech support was so-so (India?), but they had me send the unit to Texas and about a month later I got a 'like new' one in the mail (under warranty). It actually worked better than the first, as it found more satellites much faster. Best prices I've seen are around $140. Circuit City had a web sale, might still be ongoing. Good luck and welcome to the party.
  14. I play golf, and my driver has a red shaft, and I bought a coyote head for the headcover. Had to add the 12, which was my jersey number in college baseball. Plus I live in AZ and coyotes are cool
  15. Speaking of logging, is there a glossary or anything to the shorthand? I know TFTC, but what is SL?
  16. I think just because you have a right to do something does not mean it is proper etiquette. We have the right to bear arms but I'm sure as heck not gonna do that around families playing on the monkey bars. No, we aren't terrorists or perverts, but parents don't know that, and I don't like to make other people uncomfortable, especially when kids are involved. I am not totally against playground/parking lot/transformer box caches, as stated you can come back later if they are busy. But it is disappointing to drive a few miles through a neighborhood or whatever and come up on a busy park, and have to abort. Plus I don't think those are very creative spots anyway.
  17. Yeah, I think taking kids might be contributing to the dilemma a bit. I take my 3 year old boy sometimes and he loves finding "treasure" with me, and there's a couple good swag items in his toybox at home that he loves from caches. Someday I'll sneak them out and put them back in circulation. Until then he won't notice a few Hot Wheels missing ... I hope!
  18. True, there are worse places, but being a "new" parent, I can imagine what the people at city parks are thinking seeing a grown man lurking around a playground alone... that's asking for trouble I think. I skip those as well.
  19. What brings you to my neck of the woods?
  20. After my 210 crashed due to the harmless (?) task of deleting some .geo files I am now leary of adding and removing them from the unit too often. However...I take my gpsr everywhere around town, and it would be nice to have a list of caches for the area I am in, so if I find some free time I can hunt down a couple quick ones. But... there are so many in my city that one .geo file isn't enough... Should I have more than one .geo file stored on my unit? Like one for the north end of town, east end, my friend's city, etc... Is there any harm in doing that? And if I do have more than one, which list will be displayed on the map? What do you guys and gals do, and how often do you update the lists you have?
  21. Call me an optimist I guess.. My expectations were low so the fact that it came back after a month was fine with me. I don't think a month is that unrealistic when dealing with a corporation. Yeah, 10 days might have been ideal, but I can live with a month, given that it works great. Phone support was annoying mainly because of the language barrier, but they really tried to help, I admit. Email was the only really lacking thing. I am not saying I am in love with the company, but I am satisfied this go-round.. and I never said the words "good service".
