  1. I'm a fussy person and am difficult to please. The Vista is excellent. Point taken?
  2. Brer Rabbit, I believe you're wrong when you say "Garmin has assigned elevation values to particular coordinates (I suppose worldwide)". This would be completely unworkable. The look up table required to give any sort of useable accuracy, anywhere is the world, would be so large it would be unusable. Auto-calibration simply re-calibrates the altimeter using the current altitude determined through GPS. Your comments regarding altitude measurements in the car were interesting and I can relate to them. I often use my Vista when flying, its altimeter usually says something in the region of 1500m to 2000m, even though the actual altitude is around 10km. This is because the Vista is calculating altitude based on air pressure, which in the cabin is kept to the equivalent of 1500m to 2000m. With the Vista it is possible to view the GPS altitude, which correctly reports 10km. On a separate note, the Vista is a superb unit and if anyone is thinking of buying one, then go ahead.
  3. If I look on the box my Vista was supplied in, it says amongst other things, waterproof to 1m for 30mins. Now as far as I'm concerned it should continue functioning correctly within the limits specified, if it doesn't then there is either a fault/defect unique to my Vista, or Garmin marketing are tying to be clever. I suspect the latter as we know that even if the Vista did survive, it wouldn't continue functioning as the battery compartment would be full of water. However, also on the box it says the Vista stores 500 waypoints. Not true, it's now 1000... Garmin aren't faultless, but the fact they continue to improve the functionality and performance of their product, via firmware updates, even after we the customer have parted with our money, can't be ignored. If I was after a new gpsr, I don't know if I'd even bother looking at their competition.
  4. Even though this is a different procedure to a 'hard reset', performing the following does clear the odometer reading: Note: Due to changes in Jumpmaster, those currently using a previous 2.29 beta version (2.29b or 2.29c) should clear user memory. This can be done by pressing and holding PAGE+ENTER (CLICK STICK)+PWR when powering the unit. A dialog box will appear verifying your intent to clear memory. This will clear waypoints, tracks, and routes. On the better cycle-computers there is usually a facility to manually enter in an odometer reading, particularly useful after changing the battery. This facility would be a useful addition to the Vista. It's interesting that they say "should" clear the user memory and not "must" clear the user memory. Does this mean that you don't have to do it? Can anyone suggest why Garmin recommend that it be cleared. I have to say that since installing 2.29d, I have yet to successfully download mapsoure data to my unit. It seems as if at some point during the download, the Vista decides to power-off and then back on again. As the download is 24Mb and takes 1hr+ I haven't been watching to see if this is actually what happens, but it would appear to be the case. Can anyone comment on this?
  5. Does anyone know whether or not clearing the user memory also clears the Vista's main odometer? I know the obvious way of finding this out but am reluctant to try If it does can it be re-set to its previous value? TIA
