I have a series of PQs I run once a month to create a GSAK database for caches in MA/RI/CT because I live near their intersection. That along with a few other PQs takes up about 35 PQ. We'll be taking a 2 wk road trip this year. Last night I created 1 "caching along a route" filtered down the distance from route, diff & terr, active only & other criteria, and 500 caches only get me about 400 miles on the road. Obviously, I've not going to have enough PQs available to me unless I start deleting the onces I run every month for my home area. I could run the 5 I have left. Delete those & create 5 more, and so on until I have the whole trip, but then I can only run each once & won't have updates. We take a laptop with us loaded with GSAK, Garmin Mapsource maps & nRoute. And a PDA. I don't have a cell phone with GPS capability nor do I want to have to go buy one. I could buy another $30 membership for 40 more PQs I guess. There will be other cachers on parts of the trip, but I know its against the rules to trade PQs data. I managed 2 yrs ago for 2 wks in CA with the PQs I had, but with more & more caches exploding everywhere, it just gets harder & harder for long trips. What do people do in such a case?

THANK YOU. I was running PQs I've had set up for months. Last night & tonight I was tweaking the dates to maximize getting as close to 500 as possible, yet the results were coming back all screwy. Yes, I had picked Sept 31, 2008 - July 13, 2009. When you extend the end date, you got less results. If you shorten the end date, you get more results? It wasn't until I finally saw this post, that I realized there is NOT a Sept 31. I agree, it should not allow you to pick that date. I was ready to complain the PQs were not working right anymore.

Going to wear out my laptop touch pad & my finger with all the scrolling due to white space. And I'm really glad we aren't still printing paper. Can you imagine how many pages that must take now? Don't like the your / you thing. Too many column wraps.

You can also run a PQ searching for caches found in the last 7 days. I do that in the middle of winter. Way too many people around here do not bother to use the Winter Accessible icon. BUT, if someone found it 7 days ago in the middle of winter, its a good bet its findable in winter. Then there is the disagreement on what Winter Accessible even means. Does it mean its findable in winter, or the place is open to people in winter. Besides the hiking stick for poking around, I also carry a 3 finger gardening hand tool. Its good for digging in that frozen snow, and its helpful to hook onto the edge of a cache container to get it out. If a caches is really frozen into place though, don't break it by trying to get it out. Instead, see if you can get even a corner of the lid open, right your name on a piece of paper you brought, & slip it into the open corner & close it back up. I also take pics if really unable to get it out, submit to owner & see if they will allow you to log. I don't really like doing it that way, because so many people play by the "you didn't sign it, you didn't find it" rule. Sign it or leave your name as a minimum. Winter can be fun.....you get to follow other cachers footprints. We love to make lots of extra footprints in the snow as to not be a dead giveway that's where the cache is. And in a really GOOD cold winter, I love the ability to walk on water to get those Terrain 5 caches. Just use common sense and lots of safety guidelines for doing that!

You could pdf the cache pages and GE maps, and either email them or put them on an SD card? Cute pdf is a good free pdf maker, if you don't already have one installed... That's an idea. His personal laptop is fried so he didn't take it with him....but I'm sure in his job he has access to one or a buddy has one. He's not out in the field - but rather stays at the camp. Still wondering about the paper / snail mail method for right now though if anyone knows the answer.

I'm unable to register at the Military Geocaching Association website for some reason. (We are military family.) It keeps telling me I have wrong Confirmation Code. So, I'm asking this here. I have a friend deployed to Camp Phoenix, just outside of Kabul, Afghanistan. He has very limited online access time, so I don't want him to waste it by trying to look up cache info. First, I don't even think he really knows about geocaching, but I thought it would be something fun for him to do since there seem to be 2 caches on Camp Phoenix. I wanted to print out the cache pages for him. Since I don't think he has a GPS with him, I wanted to put the coordinates into Google Earth, mark the location of the cache, & print a satellite photo for him and mail it all to him in the next care package. Since the location of Camp Phoenix is no secret to the enemy, and satellite photos of it & all the buildings are readily available online & on Google Earth, I figured it wasn't any security breach to mail coordinates & satellite photos. Right? So, can I send it? What do others think? We also have another friend in Iraq who is ordering a GPS from Amazon so he can do some caching while there.

One balloon was found online, location found online, and they had someone go out to confirm. So, you could be sitting in rural Oregon & still helping. -
Cheap Pen That Writes On Waterproof Paper?
wandering4cache replied to kunarion's topic in General geocaching topics
Another vote for Sharpie....because it also writes perfectly on wet paper logs. Have not come across a log we can't sign yet with a Sharpie! We are currently using a Sharpie clickable retractable pen in ultra-fine, but the regular ultra-fine Sharpies work the same. -
Our prayers & thoughts go out to the cacher & his friends & family. Such a shame. Reminds everyone its just a game & to know your limits, but still always be safe. You never know when accidents are going to happen.

Charter Members - what was cut off date?
wandering4cache replied to wandering4cache's topic in Website
Ok, that explains it. We joined Aug 2002, but didn't become a Premium Member until Oct 2003. Have been one ever since with no lapse at all. The other cacher joined Oct 2002, but must have become a premium member before March 2003. Thanks for the info. Can I pay for a retroactive charter membership? -
I always thought I missed it by just a few months, but recently noticed someone who joined 2 months after us & is listed as a Charter Member. Out of curiosity, what was the cut off date for joining? And how could they be a charter member if joined Oct 2002?

Same here. 2 arrived just after midnight. Still waiting on the other 3 at 7:30pm -- even after the server restart.

This is why I'm a Geocacher, NOT a waymarker
wandering4cache replied to RIclimber's topic in General geocaching topics
I've visited WDW many times & take less & less pics each time. You come home with all the same pics after a while. Downy has been way more times than I have. If I have been as many times as he, I don't know if I would even been bringing a camera. I think 60 minutes is a ridiculous amount of time to expect logs & pics, and then to receive an email like that. I would be done with Waymarking also. I tried Waymarking a couple of months ago and had major difficulty in trying to post pictures & finally gave up saying it wasn't worth it. And besides...the waymarks being discussed didn't NEED pics. Talk about RUDE emails! -

Keystone Here is a question I have, Why is it that one reviewer will allow the example that is being heavily discussed here but Another will not allow it because they call it a power trail or cache saturation. I have talked to many cachers that are having this problem. ALL Guidelines are being met but its the reviewer that wont allow the caches to be published. I have not seen anywheres where it says that a person can not do a so called "power trail" (I personaly hate the name power trail) but the reviewers are taking upon themselves to wright this "rule" into the guidelines and there judgment about the amount of caches on a trail or there distance from each other (between .11 and .19). Can you please explain to myself and everyone else that my be following this topic and have that same question I do, as to why there is such a wide range permissible and not permissible cache locations between reviewers? If this is a big issue with reviewers (distance between caches on a trail or road) why not just up the distance between caches to .2 and the problem will be solved. (This would be a future update and everything in place now would be grandfathered) Gene G. genegene Genegene, just an FYI here. Your example is sort of comparing apples & oranges. Incase you haven't looked at the caches in ME, they are about .75 miles & more apart, and the section of dirt road(s) used is well over 75 miles long. More when you factor in the doubling back required for some parts of it. I haven't totalled up the driving just for the section of caches, but I know we were well into 120 miles just on dirt roads...and quite happy to find a gas station when we reached civilization. Plus the hour drive on Rt 9 in the morning just to get from Bangor to the Stud Mill Rd area. I'm not aware of anywhere in MA where you could duplicate this. So trying to say the reviewer wouldn't approve it is a bit unfair. In MA, you would have to put them closer and it would be a much shorter road for sure. This isn't your cache every .10 mile....like we saw out in CA on a section of highway. All guardrail caches. We didn't do any of those by the way. Drive right by them. This is an area of land owned by a paper company. A dirt logging road. No logging trucks on the Sunday we were there, but its shared as a recreational area for all to use. There were hunters, ATV trailerss, fisherman using the road that day.

Nice pics! I especially like the one of the lake with the 3 stones in the foreground. Nicely composed. thank you. I really enjoy taking pictures & sharing them. I'm far from good at it though. lol Glad someone appreciates it.

Why did you go then? Why not just take a trip to the Maine countryside and find 5 caches? Why do your logs, the exact same one copy and pasted 140 times, talk about how you found 140 caches in x number of hours? Skippermark copied and pasted the same log 170 times. Just about everyone is copying and pasting logs, and referencing how many they snagged in x number of hours. I didn't read 17,000 logs, but why isn't anyone referencing the beautiful Maine countryside in their cut and paste cache logs? Why isn't anyone mentioning the honorees who have the roadside micros named after them? I do not have 140 identical logs. I spent a lot of time being organized & taking notes about cache condition, scenery, and anything else we thought log worthy. My log is long in each case, and when appropriate, I mentioned what was unique about the cache. Yes, many are copy & paste, but they aren't all the same. It took me 3 days to log them all. I did mention the honorees I know & have met. Did you read all my logs? I'm guessing not. Think what you all want. I really don't care. We went & we had fun. So did the other cacher with us. We were glad to hook up with friends again that we had met at GeoWoodstock in CA. I've been to Maine before and Acadia National Park. This was an area / type of scenery I hadn't experienced in Maine, and I'm glad we went. Really, I don't know what everyones problem is. Everyone caches for different reasons. We cache for many reasons. Each trip / cache outing is different. Its what we were looking for that particular weekend & we are happy. Really, what's your problem?

Another thing. The thought that we are number seekers is hysterical. It took us 7 YEARS to get to 1000 caches. ROFL!!!! Yeah, a real number seeker. LOL

I guess I'm the cacher that you are talking about. For the record, we went because it was Maine & in the middle of nowhere & peak foliage Columbus Day weekend. If it had been 140 URBAN caches, there is NO WAY we would have ever driven all the way to Maine & spent a 3 days caching & sightseeing. We even had dinner with caching friends from ME & others from MA. Even did some shopping at LLBean & Cabela's. We've never had a caching experience like it . It was great. Is it how we normally cache? No. Is it something I want to do all the time? No. I've cached crazy numbers while in CA for 2 weeks while out there for GeoWoodstock. (198 caches in 2 wks. That was crazy to us. lol) It was all urban caches but we tried to stick with historic & scenic while we sightseed. While it was different, it got tiring after a few hours. We didn't feel that way in Maine. We didn't want to stop & spent the last 2 hours caching by flashlight in the total darkness on dirt roads. HOPING to see a moose. lol Here's a link to ALL our pictures from the weekend. Maybe you'll change your mind. And by the way, lots of MA cachers have driven up to ME for other caching besides Stud Mill Rd. So why a thread about me? For the record, when I saw all those caches, we NEVER though we could find so many in one day. We don't cache that fast to begin with. LOL I like to travel & see nice places. This was my one & only get-away weekend this year. http://wandering4cache.smugmug.com/ ENJOY THE PICTURES!!! All the pictures are geotagged with coordinates. So feel free to hit the MAP IT button once in the gallery to see their locations on the map.

For chuckles, I went to geocaching.com (not logged in) & put in my zip code 01540 on the front page to see what a newbie would see without an account. It brings me to caches in FRANCE!!!!!! I live in central Massachusetts, USA. If I were new, that would be the end of my dealings with geocaching. Its a long trip to France to find the nearest cache.

Thank you again! I enjoyed using it at 3AM this morning.

I don't frequent here all that much, but I do know at one time there was a long thread saying NOT to upgrade to Mapsource 6.14.x due to problems. It was suggested to stay with 6.13.7. That's where I'm at. I see there is now a 6.15.x? What's the feeling on this version so far? I couldn't find a thread. Thanks. Also, any known issues with it on Windows Vista 64-bit?
