  1. I think maybe, regardless of whether the School Prefect was right or wrong to post a needs archiving log, it is the choice of name that may be the factor that has annoyed people. A prefect can be defined as "a person appointed to any of various positions of command, authority, or superintendence". The choice of name appears to indicate that whoever has started this sock puppet account feels they have some jurisdiction over the geocaching community. A completely random name with no meaning may have been a less contentious choice for the person who is using this sock puppet account and may have received a less angered response.
  2. There we have it, expressed eloquently, the reason geocaching is what it is today. While I must admit I would far prefer to be walking in the countryside finding ammo boxes, currently my circumstances dictate that were it not for urban micros/nanos, I would be unable to cache. With an 18 month old who's either in a pushchair or on reins and unable to manage a long walk across the countryside, I am grateful to those who have placed urban micros so that I can keep my hand in geocaching until such a time where my little boy is big enough to cope with a long walk to a countryside ammo box. It's been said before, but if you don't like a cache then you can choose not to do it and even add it to your ignore list, but at least it's still there for me and my little boy to find so that we can still enjoy the game together.
  3. I just wanted to add my thanks for reworking this feature so it can be used again. I very much appreciate your hard work to reinstate it.
  4. Are you a Premium Member? If so, you can submit a Pocket query to Groundspeak and then file/load the pocket query GPX file directly into Google earth to view the caches contained within it. Jon. Can anyone tell me where I am going wrong with this? I submit a PQ, save it to my computer and then open the file through google earth. When I do this, a PQ that has many results of caches, only shows me the location of 3-5 caches when I open it in google earth. Should I be doing something with the file before opening it in google earth? I've tried opening several different PQs doing this so it's not just an error with a particular PQ, I just can't see what is wrong. Firstly, are you sure the PQ has more than just the 3-5 caches you can view? Sorry if this sounds a stupid question, but just want to be sure. Secondly, there is a scrolly tool on Google earth (it's top left of my GE window) that allows you to select what caches it is showing based on the date they were placed. You need to expand the scroll bar to include all the dates, so drag the left hand scrolly box fully left and the right hand fully right. Otherwise you may be just viewing a subset of the pocket query. Cheers, Jon. Ah thank you Jon. It was the scrolly tool problem! I couldn't find it until I starting playing the tour of the waypoints and suddenly it appeared. The dates needed changing on it for the rest of them to show up. Now I can at least view my PQs in google earth. Thanks again!

  6. Hugely disappointing that this function has now been completely pulled. I use it to scope out the terrain to see on countryside caches if I feel that it is a cache that I can do with a buggy and also if I feel the area looks an ok place to be for a mum and small child to be on their own. If it is a new area often this can be the only way I can suss out a place before visiting so it is not a waste of a long journey when I get there. Now I have to put each individual cache in and check it out rather than getting a feel for an area, this takes far too long. I realise that we may not have a huge find count, but I can see our find count will progress even more slowly now as with a small child, I don't have time to spend hours planning a caching trip. Extremely disappointed that this has been removed and there are no plans to improve the service in order to be able to keep it.
  7. I just wanted to register my disappointment at the removal of the google earth feature. I found it useful to assess if the terrain of the caches in an area seemed suitable for us now all caches are done with a pushchair in tow - especially as many users do not mark their caches as buggy friendly when they are! I know I don't get to cache as often as some so maybe I am not counted as one of the 'regular users', but I was a regular user of this whenever I was planning to go caching and will sorely miss this function.
  8. We went caching on our honeymoon a few weeks ago. Unfortunately we only managed 2 out of the 7 caches I was hoping to complete whilst there, but that wasn't through lack of trying! Not sure the husband (poor Pete!) was too pleased, he's not quite into the hobby as much as I am, but it is supposed to be the man's job to arrange the honeymoon and the honeymoon did come 7 months after the wedding so this is my pay back Sarah
  9. Jenny, I can help with this if you would like. Send me the details through my profile. Sarah
  10. Just a random thought to try if you haven't already. Can you call up the coordinates on your GPS that it was hidden at and then search by coordinate and see if any of the local caches seem to fit? Had anyone else signed the logbook when you signed it?
  11. I've been a member of the site for approaching a year now, but life got in the way for a while so there's been a bit of a long gap between caches. The bug has well and truly bitten me now though and I am trying to fit in more caches although I still only have 22 at the moment. I do have one problem though, on my first page of the nearest caches to me there are no less than 5 puzzle caches - none of which I currently have a clue about solving! Could people please stop placing puzzles caches so close to my house?!
  12. That is just what I was looking for. Thank you very much
  13. Hi everyone, I am new to geocaching (3 logged so far) so apologies if the answer to this is obvious or I have missed it along the way. I am planning to go hunting for a cache tomorrow. On this particular cache, the last person to log it says that the log book has run out. Is there a template anywhere that I can use to print off some sheets so there is somewhere to log the find for myself and future hunters? Thanks in advance for all help. Sarah
